So, it looks like I'll have to start collecting the Dragon Box singles if Skitz is going to sent these to me. It's worth it IMO. Better sounding JPN/NA dub? JPN version with subtitles? Yes please!

All right, each single holds 6 episodes. Season One is 39 episodes, so this'll cost me...$210!!! ZOMG!

It seems to me that a lot of people coming to the same conclusion here, which is: if they don't have what you want, do it yourself. And now that we finally have the means with which to achieve this—great video presented uncut and untouched, with a good choice of audio and subtitles—that's exactly what's happening here. Those for whom it is feasible are already starting to construct their own sets. I myself, am in the process of compiling virtually the exact same thing (with a few differences; see here—details subject to change).

But, like Skitz, it's my own personal project. I've thought about sharing it with Daizex, and really want to, but unfortunately, it's impossible to do legally. Even if you already own the originals, distributing a copyrighted work without the holder's permission is against [United States] law. Technically it isn't even legal to make your own backups...that is to say, the act of making a copy of something you have bought is, but any form of copy-protection system evasion isn't. I know, the laws are really screwed right now. I for one stand firmly against DRM, but it's one of those Hollywood-backed things that isn't going away any time soon.

I'm no lawyer though. It seems reasonable to distribute compilations (if only to those that provide some sort of proof of purchase for each of the compiled elements) but it can't hurt to be careful about these things.

The guy just has to remember to correct for the audio video offsets. The Toei releases and FUNI releases don't start on the same frame, so audio and subtitles are just slightly off.

Also, why is the YouTube video using blended fields? DragonBox discs are not interlaced (nor are the new Funi discs... one thing they actually got right!)

Actually, they're more than just slightly off. They're at completely different times! Don't ask me how that's possible, because I honestly don't know. I was attempting to apply Steve's subtitles for Episode 1 from the R1 release to the Dragon Box, but even when adjusting the first subtitle to the same frame as the original (with cascading changes for the rest of the timecodes), something is always off. In this case, although the narrator's translations were more or less on-cue, the title's translation showed up far too late to be acceptable...fooling around to match those two up would begin the narrator's translations when there wasn't any narration.

Unless I was doing something wrong, they would likewise all have to be re-timed in order to work as expected.

PM-ed you, but when I was doing the same for myself, I noticed ep 34, the two were roughly 8 frames off for the entire episode. Although, I think things may jump a frame when the episode recap ends and near the eye catches in the middle. Those are typically the areas FUNI/TOEI could play with without distorting the episode by any great perceivable amount. If either messed with the interior of the episode, it would cause audio/video sync problems on their own masters.

Reminds me of the projects going on at originaltrilogy.com. They've been chopping up original and remastered footage and making custom DVDs for years and they haven't been shut down.

Sounds like an awesome project, and something I'd be interested in doing myself with my Dragon Boxes if I had the time to invest in something this big. What are you going to do about the previews though? FUNi's release doesn't have them, so are you just going to cut them out of this custom release? I guess you could get someone to translate them and time them into the end of the subtitle file. Wouldn't be so much work to do with only 30-something episodes at a time on and a few months gap between the FUNi boxes.

Yes, they have everything (recap; preview; even the commercials for the TV specials!)

Why would this NOT be legal? This is a project made simply for Skitz's own personal use. He owns both sets legally and isn't planning on distributing them for profit... Some might say that he's tinkering with things that are copyrighted, but I thing what it comes down to is whether or not he's making money off them.

Skitz, you're doing the Lord's work! (lol, jk) Seriously though, even though I would never be eligible to get one of these from you, I want to wish you the best of luck!

It doesn't matter whether he plans on distributing them for profit; Funimation reserves the rights to the english distribution of the show, and that covers public presentations. It's illegal for him to just take the series and hand it out, for the same reasons why it's illegal to copy a music CD to your computer and then place the songs on a P2P program.
