In all seriousness, though, yeah. Gohan was still a kid during a lot of those 'stupid' moments so you must forgive him. And everyone knows teen Gohan was a loser -_-
Gohan during the Cell Saga was, of course, the best. But like I said, the kid is smart, but I don't consider him to use his brain very much in battle. I'd say he's FAR from the dumbest, though, so that remark seems quite misplaced to me even outside my 'ZOMG DESTROY EVERYONE WHO INSULTS GOHAN @_@' nature. I mean, everyone had those types of crap-up moments. Vegeta, to me, seemed to have the MOST, however, and not learning from your mistakes after like, 50 times...that seems a bit dumb to me.
I will say he was quite intelligent up to the mid Freeza Saga, though, but like I said, he let his anger and his rivalry with Gokou blind him far too often. That's the real reason I think he had so many moments of just...fail. In his own right, Vegeta could be considered quite the intelligent fighter, but his constant need to sort of PROVE himself got in the way of that, big time.

Well, attempting a new level of power or a new technique in an act of desperation is one thing, but even then you have to know how to do it in order for it to work (at least if you're actually intending to use it). I highly doubt Goku learned Bukujutsu at the last minute; as we saw when Gohan was teaching Goten and Videl how to do it, it takes some time to figure out (and even Goten, who, even though he'd witnessed Gohan flying before, couldn't do it himself without some level of instruction). Goku's pretty fast at learning techniques, but he's not so fast that he can pull that kind of thing right out of his ass just before someone royally trashes him.Tyro wrote:I don't believe Goku learned Bukujutsu while training with Kami-sama. He Kamehameha'd his way around the arena too much to be saving energy during the fight. I always assumed he learned it right before he beat Piccolo, because he had to, or he'd die.KinoFourpaws wrote:He kept the fact that he could use Bukujutsu a secret until the very end. Caught Piccolo totally by surprise! You can't say there wasn't some strategy involved in that decision.
Besides; even if you could argue the fact that he could learn something in that frame of time (or even that his learning of Bukujutsu in said frame was unintentional), the whole point of it as far as that fight goes is moot. Goku himself says (several times whenever someone's pushed to try to help him) that he's got the thing in the bag. Even when Piccolo has broken all his limbs and is preparing to deal his final blow, Goku insists, "I can still win this!" That was not just a foolhardy declaration; he really did still have Bukujutsu up his sleeve to use. I don't think he'd be shouting that if he hadn't already been able to do it beforehand; if it really WAS something he learned at the absolute last second, he would probably have said something more akin to "Oh fuck, I think I'm screwed. Crap!"

Also, save for his Super Kamehameha, all of the other Kamehamehas he used to get around (and back into) the arena were pretty paltry. And even after he'd performed the Super Kamehameha, there was no sign from him that he'd just expended a large enough amount of his ki to slow him down any. So I don't think it's too far a stretch to conclude that he had plenty of energy to spare for the other smaller Kamehamehas he used during the fight. Flying may have been easier, yes, but I really do think that was one technique he wanted to keep on the down low unless it was absolutely necessary he use it. (And, if you note, even Kuririn, who also knew how to use it, didn't even bother to use it that much during that arc. Perhaps it still took more effort to perform than it looked like it did?)

Didn't ya' know, Rocketman can't die till he proves three things about DBZ - 1) Vegetto is the personification of strong bad-ass, 2) Gohan should rot in Hell for even being considered defeating Buu by Toriyama, and 3) Chichi is the hottest piece of country-mountain-side bacon in the DB universe.Suupaa Gohan 2 wrote:YOU DIE FOR YOUR GOHAN BASHING X_X

But anywho, I'm on your side, Gohan's my favorite character too. ;D
I'm with Kino on this one. Goku would've had to had some learning of Bukujutsu in order to master it at the last minute, it isn't like it was a spontaneous moment like his later Super Saiyan transformation. Counting the Wedding filler episodes, we see him fly for a bit when he has to escape the furnace of 8 divinations, so it's clear he's at least mastered it to a somewhat decent degree. However, I always found that he didn't master it fully till much later after his training with Kaio, as when we see him early on in DBZ, flying greatly wore him out and is probably why he was saving it in the 23rd Budokai; so as to reserve energy (making sure to use the Kinto'Un when he could for casual traveling). I will say this, I always found it kinda neat that we never actually see Goku fly in the original DB series till the very end of his battle with Piccolo, kinda like a little nod to the first episode when he has to save Bulma from the Pterodactyl ("I'd like to help her, but I really don't know how to fly"). Flying certainly was a big thing in those early days, even Yajirobe never manages to pull it off, but when Goku pulled it off; he did it with style.KinoFourpaws wrote:Well, attempting a new level of power or a new technique in an act of desperation is one thing, but even then you have to know how to do it in order for it to work. Son Gohan's inability & doubt to fight at those moments beforehand mentioned is what makes him the most human of a lot of the characters that are well...human. He's scared, weak-willed, but when the extreme moments rises in front of him, he's willing to defend his friends. Like his father he has a kind heart, but is not a battle maniac like he is. Calling him dumb because he experiences human emotions & trauma is a tad unfair. It's like putting your average joe in the middle of the mayhem & expecting to know he's suppose to do because he just happens to have some sort of lineage or power that no one else has. What really fascinates me about his character is that most of his strength derives from the other characters. His will to protect those endearing to him when the time comes. In any case, to each his own.
As far the dumbest of characters....yeah I have to agree on Nappa.

Re: Who uses their brain and who doesn't?
Goku was the fighting genius of the entire DB, DBZ & DBGT. He not only thought up new fighting techniques of his own, but he even modified other people's techniques as well. And he was the only Z fighter who did this. And in my opinion, he passed up Piccolo's fighting intellect as soon as he turned into a Super Saiyan. And it showed during his fight with Cell at the Cell games.Li'l Lemmy wrote:Who is the most intelligent fighter on the battlefield? (This applies to DragonBall, DBZ and/or DBGT.)
It's a tough call, but I'd have to go with Vegeta on this one. He fights with only anger and strength. He had his "outsmarting the enemy" moments here and there, but most of the time it was only when he outclassed his opponent in every way (just like when he fought Imperfect Cell's transformation #2). But we all know how it turned out. Vegeta, with his stupid judgement, always ended up making the mistake of underestimating his opponents.Who is the most RETARDED? (of the Z fighters)
