Hiroshi Aoyagi's 2005 book Islands of Eight Million Smiles makes much of this etymological connection – it's worth a read if you're looking for more about the idol industry (even if his view of otaku unreflectively and uncritically parallels the pre-2000 media narrative of creepy, deviant characters with unhealthy interests).

Hmmm.... Vikings or Greeks. i don't know who to choose. Anyway, i agree with you Mike. I also think it's just another way of making quick cash with the CD.
