Namek's "Natural Disaster" ...and other stuff.

Oh, thank you so much. So there was no specific mention of a drought in the original manga. That makes things a lot easier for me.

Well, thanks for the help so far guys.

I do have a few other Namek-related ponderings for my fanfic. Rather than make new threads, I figured I should just bring them up here. So I renamed the thread accordingly.

Okay, here we go. This time, I'm interested in two certain members of the Namekian race.

Numero uno: Kami. I already know just about everything, chronologically, that there is to know about what he does from his appearance in DragonBall onwards. But it's his otherworldly backstory I'm interested in.

How much was revealed about Kami's life before his arrival on Earth? How old was he when he arrived? Did he have a name before he became known as Kami (or can I make one up)? Was anything revealed about his backstory?

All I know is that he was called the 'Son of Katats' at one point (when and where, again?), he showed up knowing how to make DragonBalls, and he was the only known surviving Namekian besides Saichoro and Slug.

Speaking of which, that brings me to character numero due: Slug. Now, anyone's personal distaste for him and/or his movie aside, I'm thinking of involving him in my story, if possible. So I basically want to know everything there is to know about him. All I've seen of him is the crappy dub of his movie. So any info on him given out in the Daizenshuu, or movie guides or anything... lay it on me.

This is covering all of the back-story I could remember. You might already be aware of some of this.

Dragonball Volume 14:

Kami-sama: “Piccolo and I were one. A single, brilliant martial artist. One day, just like you, I learned of the existence of Kami-sama and came here. Unfortunately, even gods die…And I wanted to become Kami-sama’s heir. But no matter how much time passed, he would not appoint me. I myself believed that no one more worthy existed…But Kami-sama saw what I would not…deep in my soul… …the worm of evil. Through agonizing training of spirit and body I was able to expel that evil--But it lived, to become the demon king Piccolo. I became the new Kami-sama, but Piccolo escaped to the Earth below and brought pain to its people. That has long been my shame.”

Dragonball Volume 21:

Karin-sama: "I see. Then Kami...or should I say the Namekian who calls himself that...must have escaped the cataclysm... ...But then forgotten it himself, either because he was too young, or he lost his memory in the trauma...What a tragedy..."

Kaio-sama: "Don't worry. Namekians are a mostly peaceful race...Just like Kami-sama of Earth was. The great demon Piccolo was most likely corrupted by the malicious humans he met along the way..."

Mr. Popo: "A century ago, the lord Kami-sama spoke of his godly past to Mr. Popo...for the first and only time. It was a mysterious tale. Kami-sama said that his godship had lived in the Yunzabit Highlands as a child. Then Mr. Popo said that the Yunzabit is a wasteland. Why would a child be there?"

Bulma: "And...?"

Mr. Popo: "Kami-sama said that his godship did not know. Even his lordly mind was confused. Perhaps the godly head had been struck and his holy memory lost.... Mr. Popo asked again: Were his godship's parents there? Kami-sama replied: No parents. Only a note reading, "We will come for you later. Wait for us..."" *later* "The lord Kami-sama waited for his holy parents for a long time. And waited and waited...."

Kami-sama: "There was a house there...I trusted that my parents would come...someday...But years stretched on...and no one came. It was hard...Finding food was hard...How long did I wait? 20 years? 30? Bulma: "I-If this is a spaceship, then his story makes total sense...!"

Sorry to bump this back up after a while (...eh, not THAT long.), but I've got another question.

I've read that "Piccolo" was the unsplit, young, abandoned little Kami's original name. Any validity to this? Would it contradict anything or cause any problems if I made it so for my fanfic?

P.S. - Thanks a bunch for all that dialogue info there, Tryo. That'll help a lot.

As far as I know nothing really stops the possibility that Piccolo was the name of the original Namekian who calls himself Kami-sama and Piccolo now besides Piccolo mentioning how he is a Namekian who has forgotten even his own name, after he combines with Kami-sama. But considering how that was the word to enter Kami-sama’s/Piccolo Daimao’s “house”, and Piccolo Daimao had to have gotten his name from somewhere, if you want “Piccolo” to be Kami-sama’s name of old, there’d be nothing there you couldn’t write around. (Like saying because Piccolo wasn’t the Daimao of old, and had his own personality, he couldn’t remember the name himself.)

So in short, yes, you can call the original Namekian that makes up Kami-sama and Piccolo Daimao as “Piccolo” without there being too much trouble. But if you want the actual name he goes by, we can't be fure sure what it actually was.

I figure his having thrown Nail into the mix already kinda scrambled things up a bit.

But yeah, I figure I'll use "Piccolo" for his name. Leaves other names I've come up with available for other characters. And I might as well firmly plant it into the readers' heads who he is, anyway.

Also, wasn't a translation for "Piccolo" given at one point? Doesn't it mean "home" or something?

Now that Mr. Popo thinks about it, "Piccolo" is a perfect entrance word. It means "another world" in that language.

BULMA

So the Great Demon Piccolo means...]

With the Simmons translation being only slightly different:

"Piccolo" means "other world" in those words. That why password for door.

So that's it. "Piccolo Daimao" means "the Demon King of Another World".]

So yeah. Piccolo wouldn't be the little guy's name, but would definitely be the word he identified with most, since he knew the language. Being the only of your kind in a strange new world, abandoned in the wilderness by your parents... no friends, no family... "Another World" seems a logical choice for the Son of Kattatsu to relate his identity to. That's the way I saw it anyway. He was too young to remember his true name, so he adopted what was probably the most common word in his vocabulary, as well as the word which was most closely associated with "home".

So when the Son of Kattatsu casts off "Piccolo", he's actually casting off his sense of self? That would make things interesting.

Hmmm... It looks like "Piccolo" for his given name might not work, after all.

For clarification, I'm talking about his name when he was still back on Namek as a child, before he got sent away from the impending chaos.

I do have a few other Namekan names I've made up that I can use, if "Piccolo" really won't work.

Well, there's always the gastropod naming puns to consider.

But either way, "piccolo" is apparantly a Namekian word. Not a name.

Yeah, that's what I've been doing for names. Looking up musical instruments and gastropod species names and junk, then fiddling with them to make names.

Okay then, so "Piccolo" won't work for a Pre-Earth name. Back to the name pool with you, li'l Kami...

I know how you feel with name creation. I had that issue with the Saiya-jins in my AH series. Even after knowing I would have it and expanding my name pool by making male names vegetable puns and female names fruit puns. I've got so many Saiya-jins that are at least mentioned if not shown... oi.

Hmm. Since you're sticking strictly to gastropod puns for the Nameks the name I chose for use in AH (Zildar) wont work. Only other ones I've done that I can think of and remember the puns for are Sanil and Eskarga.

Like Batu - Just switch the syllables on that one. Then there's Armon, Kaaz, Saksa, etc...

If those aren't Piccolo's kids then I don't see why Piccolo wouldn't work for a Pre-Earth name. But if they are his kid's (o.o) then that pun base doesn't have any relation to the discussion at hand.

Huh? Now you're confusing me.

I'll come up with something good and original for lil' Kami eventually. Names are the least of my planning troubles right now concerning the whole "Namek saga."
