Could they remove film grain without ruining things?

I wish they would just remake the series. I know it's never going to happen but if they did it would be awesome and there would be no grain. I would love to see the whole series with the same quality as Dragonball GT or better yet the starting movies of the games (without the anorexic characters of Sagas, perhaps the same style as Budokai 3)
I know it would never happen unless Funimation got desperate to keep milking without re releasing the same stuff and gets Toei to do something about it. Or if Toei gets desperate.
They could use the same voices, or maybe re-dub or touch them up (but personally I think the voice acting for both the Japanese and English dub (despite English inaccuracy at time) are excellent)
I would love to see high quality DBZ on my TV again. That would rock.
And since at the time in Japan they pumped out one a week while keeping up with the manga they might be able to do the same again. Or maybe do them all at once or something.
The chances of a re-animate are probably 0.5 at best (0.5% so out of 100)
But it would rock. Hard.

I read some more stuff on removing grain. They could've just ran a median filter, which is good at preserving detail, or they could've cleaned the grain out and restore the lost details.

Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

FUNimation should worry more about film damage than grain, which I personally find a lot more distracting. The graininess is just a part of the picture quality with old, not-so-expensive film. Personally, I've become so accustomed to it in DB/Z that I don't even notice it. It just feels like part of the animation, while specks of dirt or hair and such popping up every few seconds is far more distracting, IMO.
If they won't even do proper, manual frame-by-frame editing to remove damage, there's no way they'd do it for the grain. But they're probably making their money back and then some for whatever they spent to acquire film prints and fund Franko's (or was it Franco?) work, so there's very little chance they'll do things over yet again.

But they didn't. They've already admitted to having "remastering" the entire series exactly as Steve Franko's demonstrated. It's a rushed, budged project that FUNimation insisted they do a quick job on. I really don't understand why you're trying to find some reasoning on why FUNi might've put some real effort into this when all they really did was hire VP&T to give their purchased 3rd gen prints as cheap a grain smoothing job as possible.jjgp1112 wrote:I read some more stuff on removing grain. Okay, Okaya, no need to go crazy. And how do we know that VP & T did this themselves? I mean, we only got this notion from an e-mail response that Steve sent to someone here, and not an official statement. Judging his character from his terrible grammar, he was probably just trying to cover up his own ass.

I meant the problems like qover-brightening and what not. How do we know whether or not VP & T fucked up the colors and not Funi. After all, we're basing this off of what Franko said in an email reply, not an official statement.MajinVejitaXV wrote:Call me crazy, but the video where they (or Steve Franko, to be exact) say they did it was kinda the tip-off for me. It's on the Season One set, and is also in writing in the booklet with that same set.jjgp1112 wrote:And how do we know that VP & T did this themselves?

See?
"I think it's very important to know that there was no color correction...err, very minimal color correction..."

P.S. - Before you try to say he cites minimal color correction and is therefore not at fault, remember that he also goes on about how widescreen is infinitely better and we gain picture out the ass....which has been disproven by every 9 year old without Downs Syndrome.

Uh, we know they messed around with the colors, etc. from the featurette provided on the Season One set.jjgp1112 wrote:I meant the problems like qover-brightening and what not. How do we know whether or not VP & T fucked up the colors and not Funi.
All the visual flaws you see are from VP & T, as they are in charge of the visual makeover. Funimation only provided the funding for Franko to "remaster" the series.
EDIT: Damn, Corey beat me to it.
Oh crap, I messed up the wording. I meant, "How we do know whether or not Funi fucked up the colors and not VP & T?" I confused myself. The whole time I meant that VP & T fucked up the colors, and Funi didn't. Sorry for all the confunsion.MajinVejitaXV wrote:Because. Steve. Franko. Said. In. A. Extra. In. The. First. Box.
