The "shiftone" thing was a parody of bad internet writing. You know when people put lots of exlamation marks at the end of their sentences, and sometimes they end up putting "1"s there too? Well, actually writing out "shiftone" mocks those bad typers.

The "doubleplus" thing is from 1984, where English had been streamlined. So that rather than things being "good", "very good", "excellent", "amazing", and so on, they were "good", "plus good", "doubleplus good", etc. Julian saying "The Ministry of Love" references the Ministries of Peace, Information, and...something else, that were in the book.

Thanks Liam. I've never read 1984, so of course I wouldn't get that. :( That means Dayspring knew something I didn't! Arrrrgghh! That makes me so mad. :x :P
