That's true, what with Dragon Ball Online and the new special. Maybe he's feeling nostalgic.dchan316 wrote:It could be a while. Dragonball tends to get more new merchandise than most of the current big series. Also, Toriyama seems to be dabbling back in it quite a bit, lately.
When will it end?

I'm in the generation of fans that started with Toonami, so I totally empathize with the feeling of having "missed the party", experiencing disappointment, and wanting to experience it myself. But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

ADV should have gotten the series in the beginning, or even Geneon.NeptuneKai wrote:As soon as ADV takes the dubbing rights to Dragonball and gives it a better dub, they will air it on T.V for awhile but then they will take it off and only release the DVD sets in a 14 episode pack for the price of $40. The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.
As long as I can do it in the nude like Goku did, then I don't have a problem with it!Kunzait_83 wrote: Or if that isn’t your cup of tea, perhaps a virtual reality concept in which you can step into the Tenkaichi Budokai arena and fight against Piccolo Ma Junior. And what you guys are wishing for will never happen, anyway.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

The releases will end only when the property ceases to be marketable, as someone indicated earlier. There needs to be a nice selling point for each new iteration of product for them to keep this pace up. So far, for the Z series, we have this:
VHS dub edited, later dub uncut (I think a few sub uncut as well)
DVD dub edited (Pioneer releases)
DVD dub & sub uncut (DBZ singles, including UUEs)
DVD dub, dub w/J-music, sub, as organized into Season sets or movie collections + "remastered"
Blu-Ray dub, dub w/J-music, sub (movies & TV specials)
What I predict in the future might include:
Blu-Ray Seasons on 2-3 discs each, otherwise identical to DVD seasons
Blu-Ray successor seasons on 1 disc each, plus movies on 1 disc
Blu-Ray successor successor complete series release, probably still widescreen, on 1-2 discs
Logically, these predictions may or may not happen, but the point is that with each format, there has to be a selling point. I think the Blu-Ray sets are next up for the Z series, but it is doubtful that the video can get much better than what we got with the movies and Season 6, so I'd rather see the extra space dedicated to putting more episodes on a single disc.
Of course, we all know when the DBZ releases will end. It will all come to an end when Funimation puts a respectable EXTRA on one of the releases; something like an hour-long behind-the-scenes documentary on dubbing the series, the history of the series in America, or one of the executives addressing the Freeza Saga dub and stating unambiguously: "We fucked up." Now that I think about it, when that line or its non-profane equivalent is uttered publically, we know that DBZ is finally over.

You really expect us to STILL use discs TWO formats after Blu-Ray? And Blu-Ray is is hardly a guaranteed success so far. Just because HD-DVD is no longer supported by the bigwigs doesn't automatically mean that Blu-Ray will be supported by consumers as a whole before another format.
I'm sure we'll move beyond discs at least two formats past Blu-Ray(assuming Blu-Ray is successful in converting people from DVDs).

I agree. To be honest, Blu-ray seems like a small step forward in the long run, hardly worth replacing your DVD collection yet. It's not as big as the change from VHS to DVD, it's just an improvement.Super Ghost Kamikaze wrote:You really expect us to STILL use discs TWO formats after Blu-Ray? Something else might come along and replace Blu-ray sooner than we expect...I'm hoping for Babylon 5 style data crystals, personally!

I am sure this question has been asked a million times but I guess it is my turn to do so. Here in the states various animation groups and companies are constantly revamping popular comics/cartoons to reach a new generation of fans. Take the Batman and Superman animated series for instance. Do you believe that sometime in the near future the same will happen to the Dragonball franchise? Will DBO, or the Vegeta Jr. and Goku Jr., characters will spawn a completely new animated television series and our grand children will go through all of this? Moreover, is there any precedence for this in any other Japanese series?
The Saiyans are very much like the Klingons and Jem'Hadar.
Hmnm.. It doesn't usually happen quite the same in Japan I think. Take the latest Guyver TV series for instance. It's a retelling of the same classic story, but with new character designs and very minor changes. The characters themselves and overall theme hasn't changed as much as things like X-men and Spider-man do from interpretation to interpretation.Saiyan-Professor wrote:I am sure this question has been asked a million times but I guess it is my turn to do so. Dr Slump, another of Mr Toriyama's works, got a revamped series as well. The character designs were updated and everything, but it was pretty much the same as it always had been, I think?
Even Dragon Ball had the 10 year anniversery movie, with the latest animation and a slightly altered retelling of how Goku, Bulma and Yamcha met.
So who knows? Maybe 20-40 years down the road they'll remake all of Dragon Ball. Possibly following the manga more closely and compacting the series to a more reasonable length? I wouldn't mind seeing that, to be honest. I'm also holding out for a TV version of 3x3 Eyes someday.

That would be an interesting way of revamping Dragonball. The original series in Japanese was told from the perspective of Kaiô-sama. However, what if we would get Z told from the perspective of Vegeta or Piccolo?Super Ghost Kamikaze wrote:Also, they've only made games focusing on the perspective of Goku. If Vegeta told the story, there would undoubtedly be embellishments on certain aspects of it.
