It's because I thought he was comparing SSJ Chibi Trunks to Future Gohan when he said "SSJ Kid Trunks." I didn't realize he was comparing SSJ 13-year-old Future Trunks to Future Gohan. So ignore what I said.

@Terra-jin: I don't remember the exact phrasing, but the narrator says that Goku surpassed the level Saiyans had ever achieved. As for near-death limits, you may be onto something. We never see any boosts resulting from near-deaths once the android saga is introduced.
