When did he say that?

That is how he based some of the series. It doesn't explain how Goku is such goof, but a great hero at the same time. I guess I should have said inspiration, I'm not sure whether Journey to the West was the exactly his inspiration. Unless Toriyama just LOVES Journey to the West.

The entire concept of the series was based off Journey to the West, it wasn't a coincidence, Toriyama was intentionally parodying the story, Son Goku is Sun Wukong, the manga is filled with adaptions of characters from Journey to the west. Toriyama later deviates from this of course, but the fact is thats what the series was originally supposed to be, it just evolved into a sci-fi fantasy martial arts epic.

Concept, not his motivation. For example, was it his mom, friend, wife, or whoever pushing him to parody this story?

Son Goku was heavily based on Tanton, another character Mr Toriyama created for a short manga called Dragon Boy, which could be considered the prototype for Dragon Ball. Where he got the inspiration for that? I'm not sure. But even Dragon Boy was basically a modern update of Journey to the West.

I know a place, but I wonder if it's okay to link to it? I don't think the manga has ever been released in English, but still..

Oooo! I'm telling! No but seriously I would also ask Mr. Toriyama to draw a picture of Chrono/Crono fighting Trunks. With swords of course.
I completely respect your opinion, and I respect you. I enjoyed discussing this with you, even if I don't completely agree.

I'd have only one question for Mr. Toriyama; please, please PLEASE can I be your assistant, or apprentice or whatever? *sigh* I'd love to be able to do what he does for a living (well, more when he was more active in manga). But yea, I don't think I would have any other questions than that. I'd rather play a game of Mario Kart, or something like that with him.

Here's what I'd ask him... I even include some pointers to refresh his memory. :)

Dear Toriyama-sama,
I am a Saiya-jin nut, and have a few questions about them...

- Who was the mother of Son Goku? There was a doujinshi version of her going around by the name of "Taanipu" (name from the vegetable turnip)... What is your interpretation of her?
- Was Raditz born to the same parents as Goku? They look very different even though they're supposed to be brothers... Could they be half-brothers?
- What are your thoughts on Saiyago - was it still spoken beyond the point of the Saiya-jin's involvement with Freeza? Japanese seems to be universal as a language that everyone is able to speak in the story, but you have shown that other languages existed in the Dragonball universe (cough Namek-seigo). I am actually creating an entire language for the Saiyans!
- Why does Tahbul look so young (like in his early teens)? King Vegeta (father of Vegeta and Tahbul - as a reminder) has been dead since the time Freeza annihilated Planet Vegeta, and that was a long time ago by the point of the Buu arc - of which the new Dagonball anime special supposedly takes place not long after..
- Were there any Saiyan survivors other than Goku, Vegeta, Nappa, Tahbul, Raditz and the movie Saiyans such as Broli, Paragas (Broli's dad) and Tullace, that somehow escaped Freeza's extermination of the Saiyans?

For a non-Saiyan related questions...
- Did Freeza have a mother? If so, who was she?
- Was the race Freeza, Koola (his brother) and King Kold are from, in general, evil like them or are they more of exceptions to the rule?
- Is Tenshinhan actually human (like a mutant)?

I'll allow you some time to think these through.
Kind regards.
- SaiyaMel (Canada)
Just Saiyan...

I'd ask him how his wife and kids are doing, and he'd like to go to a bar for a drink/smoke.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

Yes, dammit. The only people who say he isn't are either stupid or haven't even bothered looking.

Not like I ever doubted such but with Toriyama you can never quite know.
