Why 3 years later and 1 year early?!

We know virtually nothing about that time line, so there could be a number of reasons that Trunks got his hands on a remote. For instance, maybe #17 never destroyed Gero's remote, and Trunks and the others went back and found it in the lab. Or, they could have found Gero's underground lab one way or another, killed the baby Cell (without ever finding out what he really was), and found the blueprints, like they did in the manga.
