I've never used "retard" to degrade the mentally disabled. I use the word "retard" when somebody does something stupid or foolish. I have nothing against the mentally disabled. I do not wish to insult the mentally disabled. And frankly, I'd be surprised to find somebody who's mentally disabled be offended when I call somebody "retarded."

The only way "retard" can be used as an insult, in my opinion, is if there is genuine hatred for the mentally disabled when using it. I don't believe Gohan has anything against the mentally handicapped.

Those who are offended by the word "retarded" are retarded.

1) Mentally retarded is an umbrella term when speaking medically. There's no one condition that's called "retarded." Furthermore, retard, by definition only means: "to make slow; delay the development or progress of (an action, process, etc.); hinder or impede."

2) Depending on the degree of retardation, they wouldn't understand. If they did, chances are, they don't classify themselves as retard.

3) "Retard" was never used as a derogatory term to a group of people that were forced into slavery or internment camp.

Right because if a word ever meant something else, it cant possibly be turned into a slur. The fact is if you are not using it in its intended context (to describe a medical condition) then its a slur against the mentally disabled.

There was a time (a very long time ago) when "nigger" was not a slur. It was a term for people with dark skin. Why did that change? Because it was used as a means of degrading black people.

Are you hurt by not being able to use use retard as an insult? Does it put you in phsyical pain to not say it?

1. Yes and nobody is complaining about that useage.

2. No but they have had people use retard as an insult to degrade them. They also have family and friends who love them, who do know its being used to degrade them.

Seriously, I'm not a mod or anything else, but let's move away from this. FUNimation, and more specifically Daimao, chose a translation 7 years ago that is an accurate interpretation of what is being said in Japanese. Yes, it is offensive. Look at Boo's reaction, Piccolo's reaction, Goten's reaction and Trunks' reaction.

As for what "retard" means in what context, if it's offensive and the like...please, just stop. When we're debating the use of the word, along with nigger/chink/spic/whop/etc (not to mention a lot of the arguments here are so badly constructed it makes my brain bleed), we just need to stop. It's way off topic and it's not even a new development.

I just got a buttload of money from my open house, so I may put some towards this.

Are they redubbing any of these later seasons, or was that just the first few seasons?

They're using the original translations from 7 years ago? Didn't Funimation have strict guidelines back in those days? I distinctly remember reading something about how Daimao wasn't allowed to translate certain things literally until much later on. Why couldn't he go back and clean up any errors/mistranslations that were made originally on the single releases?

FUNimation's "strict guidelines" only applied to the first couple of DVD's, as stated. These discs originally came roughly 2-3 years later. As for why he couldn't go back and re-translate, that's up to FUNimation. They contract him, pay for his work, assume ownership and that's it. For him to correct anything, FUNi would have to recommission the work and pay him for anything he did.

And FUNimation spending more money to produce these sets? Sure. That was gonna happen...

In this case though, there was nothing to re-translate as his initial translation was perfectly correct (see my previous notes).
