Many people keep saying that the Japanese Dragon Box picture look superior, but after looking at some comparisons, all I notice is that the Japanese picture is a bit darker and it is zoom in downwards(theres a bit more picture at the bottom than the top): The American picture is a bit brighter and it is zoom in upward( a bit more picture on top than the bottom). With those results, I can't consider the Japanese version superior, so it all depends on the individual: if he/she likes darker or brighter picture. Just because something is Japanese means that its better.

Actually, the season sets chop off both the top AND the bottom while managing to add an extremely negligible amount to the sides. And as others have said, the grain isn't removed, which means the lines of animation are still intact. People don't rave about the Dragon Boxes because they're Japanese. People rave about the Dragon Boxes because they truly are better in picture quality than any other release. The season sets make them look EVEN better by comparison.

If the brightness difference is do to the difference in US and JP NTSC standards, shouldn't it be a non-issue if you have a properly calibrated TV set? Anyone know more about that?

Well, FUNi didn't tamper with the source material, so the 10% difference in brightness is still there on the US discs. My TV is properly calibrated, but the black levels still aren't deep when watching them. To remedy this, I have a separate setting just for viewing the Dragon Boxes; all of the settings are the same, except the brightness is dropped to match the image of the Japanese sets. FUNi could've just fixed it themselves, but I commend them for not screwing up this release, so it's not a huge issue to me. Compression aside, it is possible to get near the same image as the original boxes.

I found this at Best Buy today for $45. It was only a few bucks more than what I pay to have it shipped from RightStuf so I bought it.

Speaking of Best Buy, mine had everything moved around and now the anime section is barely half of what it used to be. Hell, the entire home video section was cut down quite a bit.

So I just noticed a mistake in the new Dragon Book. For the "Close-Up" on Episode 134, it lists the evolution of Dr. Gero's artificial humans, and in it, it states that #s 19 and 20 are human base, when Daizenshuu 4 clearly labels them with #16 under "Mechanical Type." So my question to anyone who has the Japanese DBox is: was this a translation error, or did the mistake originate with the Japanese Dragon Book?
