You know, about the problems with the dub, people were chuckling, mockingly, when the first voice, Kaio's, was heard. And I even thought Kaio's voice has gotten WORSE over the years as it is more grating, blubbery sounding, weird, and out of place.

Otherwise, I think the dub was awesome. For once, I had no problem with Sabat :P

But yeah, I was surprised how packed it was of people from all walks of life (cosplayers, anime otakus, me, families, etc). Compared to when I saw other anime films, where it was not as packed, I was pleasantly surprised!
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

I should know, I've been trying to get people into the comic for years, only to be told by pretty much everyone that they would read the "real" Avengers instead of "space Avengers."
That's different because that's a big budget Hollywood movie that's market to a bigger audience. People will see anything with "Marvel" slap on it now these days. Battle of Gods is a movie for the fans. I don't think anyone who never heard of DBZ or seen it will see Battle of Gods or enjoy it. I would be lost if I saw Battle of Gods without seeing the show or reading the manga. Hollywood always been known be to strict on foreign and independent films because there's not a big market for them.

It's because they built up their brand, that's not a negative. Not everything Marvel is successful. Let's be clear that there's Marvel and there's Marvel Studios. There's enough equity in Marvel Studios' brand that they are willing to make films about obscure characters.

I don't see how you would be lost unless you read the DB manga or watched the series before watching Battle of Gods. Its story and characters aren't complex.
And I even thought Kaio's voice has gotten WORSE over the years as it is more grating, blubbery sounding, weird, and out of place.

I don't think you remember how bad it was back in 1999.

After much waiting and not being able to see it last Tuesday on the premiere because friends were busy, I was finally able to catch the last screening last night! I hadn't been that excited to see a movie in theaters since The Dark Knight Rises!

So complaints for my local theater experience: The size of the room. I had originally bought a ticket in advance for the Tuesday premiere showing, and it had one of the biggest rooms in my theater, which was awesome. But then was forced to change it to saturday afternoon and saw the room number was also one of the big ones so I was relived. But then later days was forced to change it yet again because of my friends. This was the last screening for saturday night, and unfortunately it turned out to be one of the smaller rooms in the back of the theater with a small-ish screen. :( Oh well, it didn't bother me too much, but then the movie started and... oh no... it was one of those screenings people in this thread were complaining about that only had a center-speaker audio. And, just like others have said here, it felt like I was watching a movie on a laptop with the sound quality.. it was really just bad. One speaker and it wasn't even that loud, and definitely no bass. So small screen and shitty audio... This is what I paid $9.25 for... yay.
The movie itself felt like it had a lot of screen tearing too.. just like with my shitty laptop with crappy video card! Yay! :|

Props for my local theater screening experience: The audience was great! No people screaming over 9000, no DBZ Abridged jokes, etc. Honestly, I dont really mind these kinds of people, but there were none in this particular screening so that's a plus I guess. :D Lots of people with the Goku Kame-House gi t-shirts. I guess Hot Topic or something must be selling these as I saw a lot of them, and I see many people here have, too. I myself wore my old SSJ Vegetto t-shirt I bought around 11 years ago and barely use.. still fits like a glove! It gave me a bit of self-esteem boost knowing a shirt I bought when I was around 15 years old still fits me just right.
I got inside the room around 20 minutes before the movie started. It was already around half-full, and thankfully I got the seat I wanted. Top but not all the way to the top, and to the side. I saved the two seats next to me for my friends.. which I'm glad I did because about 10 minutes before showtime people started pouring in like crazy. By showtime the room was pretty much filled. People coming in late had to seat in the dreaded front neck-breaking seats. Although, I dont know if the room was only full because it was one of the smaller ones.. there are definitely bigger ones in the theater for sure. Either way, the room was full so that was great.
Most people there were people in their 20s. Seriously, like 95% were people in their 20s. I had never been to a movie with as many people in their 20s as Battle of Gods. I think I also saw around two or three children with their 30+ parents but thats about it. This was definitely a Toonami-audience dominated screening. But it just goes to show how the fanbase is also growing older.. I dont think many kids today are growing up with Dragon Ball as kids from the late 90s/early 00s.. but that's for another discussion.
Audience wasn't obnoxious but did laugh at all the right times. Most of the Pilaf Gang scenes had a laugh, especially at the part where Pilaf thinks Trunks wants him to be his girlfriend. I laughed at that a lot myself. That and the "she's my main squeeze" part also had a huge laugh. Overall great audience.

Anyway, aside from the technical shortcomings, lets get to the actual movie:
The dub was great! I think this is the best Dragon Ball-related dub FUNimation has ever done. It's on-par or even better than DBZ Kai. No complaints here aside from my hope that they would leave out the mention of Vegeta's brother out of the dub... but nope, it was there. :( Beerus' and Whis' VAs were simply great and stole the show. Trunks and Goten sound like actual kids now not chain-smoking women.
When I saw the movie for the first time in japanese I thought it was a letdown it had so much comedy in it, as I'm the action kind of fan. But with an audience, the comedy actually works great, and were the best parts of the movie. FUNimation handled the comedy fantastically.
I think this is all I'll say about the actual movie, as everything else has already been said before. I love BoG and will get it on BD whenever it comes out.

This post turned out to be longer than I thought it would be.. so.. thanks for reading!

Why would you want them to remove that line? I would've been pretty upset if they had and decided to put their own random lines there. Especially if they manage to snag the JSAT Special one of these days.

Because Vegeta having a brother just contradicts everything about the show (I only ever mention the anime here, as I admit I've never read the manga). It's supposed to be well known that Goku and Vegeta are the only full-blooded saiyans left after Raditz and Nappa are killed, with Gohan and the others being only half-breeds. And this is stated multiple times by Vegeta, such as when Future Trunks said he was a saiyan, to which Vegeta replied that only him and Kakarrot are the only full-blooded saiyans left. Did he forget about his brother? Really, how hard is it to forget you have a brother?
Not to mention that in BoG itself, Whis says there are only five saiyans left and they all live on Earth. And only two are pure blooded saiyans, with the others being half-breeds. Why didn't Whis mention Tarble?
I just hate this retcon so much and want the main canon to have nothing to do with it.
Plus, I bet most people who dont follow every single DB related thing like us would be really confused, as the JSAT hasn't even been released in NA yet. Yeah, they might grab it.. but might not. That's something that's just gonna leave people going "did I miss something from the show? I dont remember Vegeta having any brothers..".

Why Toriyama thought it was a good idea to include a line about him in the movie is beyond me.. They should've just left him out completely.

Honestly, I can easily live with that because, for a race that is space-faring to the point that they send out babies, it never really seemed terribly plausible that only 4 managed to survive. Or that Goku was the ONLY unaccounted-for baby. I mean, the whole Saiya-jin livelihood was going out into space, so why would they all be killed when the planet was destroyed?

:problem: ...Shut up, Dragon Ball Minus...

You do realize you're talking about Vegeta, right? I mean, he's kind of an asshole like that.

I didn't see her at the time, but I later learned that a friend of mine was at the same showing as me dressed as Bulma. Left in a hurry afterwards so didn't notice if cosplayers were there.

No cosplayers at my showing that I saw, but plenty of orange Goku gi t-shirts.

Vegeta probably wouldn't consider Tarble a true Saiyan, since he's so weak and isn't even into fighting.

TheDevilsCorpse wrote:Well, my theater plans have been moderately ruined. I originally planned to see the movie tonight at my local theater (as it's the only time my schedule allowed for this week), because it was announced for all 4 days when it first popped up. I guess sometime over the wait though, they decided the Ninja Turtles would be too big of a draw and cut the last two days off the schedule. So I turned to another, not as close but still close enough, theater to get my Battle of Gods fix.

Sadly, they aren't playing it again till Monday the 11th. So, maybe I'll have the theater to myself by then...
Little updates to this story, before I even get to the theater experience itself...

So, I checked out the company website for my regional theaters to make sure that Battle of Gods was still showing at the one I was planning on seeing it at today. I mean, after the last incident above, I obviously didn't want to drive all that way only to find out it got pulled that day as well or something. While checking though, it seems that my local theater that I originally wanted to see the film at last Thursday has the movie added back into their schedule for today was well. So, I'll be going there to see it instead. That way I can save myself some time and money on gas.

Didn't Vegeta say that he wasn't sure if his Bro was alive or not in the Special?

I don't remember him saying that but I do remember him being kinda nonchalant about it. I assume he thought Tarble was dead because of how weak he was.

Didn't Whis actually say that "most" of the remaining Saiyans are living on Earth? I could have sworn that was the line, but even if he didn't, seems also plausible to me that Whis simply thought it would only really be necessary to point out the location of the strongest/largest population of Saiyans left + the location of the Saiyan who defeated Freeza to Beerus.

When Bulma asked about Vegeta's brother, I heard a lot of "Huh?"s from the audience.

My step brother was the person who introduced me to Dragon Ball Z way back when it was on Toonami. This was when Goku would land on Namek and then the next day they'd go all the way back to the beginning. He still watched the show until the end but definitely didn't get into Dragon Ball on the same level I did. I knew the movie was going to be playing here on the 5th and 6th earlier this month, but it slipped my mind until I saw an email reminder come into my inbox. Thankfully, even though we are older now and no longer live at home, we both live in the same city and work day jobs, so we were able to go together. His girlfriend came along, not sure if she is a DB fan too but they do everything together so even if she's not it really didn't matter. Our theater had to open a second showing later in the evening because the earlier one was sold out, so we went to the late one so we didn't have to scramble after work. Didn't see any costumes, but somebody did see a few orange T-shirts made to look like Goku's gi with the Kame kanji on the back.

The movie itself was really awesome because when I was younger and watching Dragon Ball Z for the first time, I always wished that we'd have a chance to see the movies in theaters like the Japanese fans got to in the 90s. It was like a childhood dream come true, in a way. Enjoyed the dub very much...the moment was too special to apply dub vs sub feelings to it, even though I have grown to enjoy the Japanese cast more. It was DBZ on a movie screen and I was happy to see it no matter what language it was in. Thought they nailed it though. And of course, it was extra special getting to watch it with my step brother who was the first person I watched DBZ with. Overall, it was a cool experience. Made me appreciate a lot of the smaller things in my life, like staying loyal to something for years and sharing good times with your family, even if they aren't your blood.

Hopefully they bring the sequel to theaters in a few years so we can all go do it again.

Well, BOG day is finally here for fans in NZ and Australia!

Madman's actually been scheduling a few extra sessions because a lot of them have been selling out, which is great news. Also heard that attendees will be receiving free A2-sized posters. :D Not sure about other screenings, but there'll also be DVD giveaways at mine. Fun times. Madman's really making this a special event.

Looking forward to it! Just under 4 hours to go now...

Might as well post mine.

This was the first screening at Hoyts Riccarton (Christchurch) (only 2 screenings were shown) on the 30th and I was early, thank god. When I came in, only a few seats were filled, and there was a woman at the front giving out free A2 posters as well. Shortly after, everyone started to come in and it got pretty packed. There was spot prizes for three random seats too (wasn't me), which were DVD sets. From what I saw I think they were Orange Brick sets, didn't care too much. Didn't see any cosplays or anything like that. lol

But overall, I enjoyed the dub, seemed pretty darn accurate and nice to hear the Kai recasts for Bulma etc, though it's odd why they had the original Z VA for No. 18 and Oolong.
