I got this yesterday from Best Buy, and I have a few comments.
The booklet is better, though I have a gripe about the already mentioned "Four Forms of Frieza" part. It says "In his first form, Frieza is in a space pod." Next to that statement is a picture of Frieza, form 1, standing there (technically he's hovering based on the position of his feet). The next line is "The second form has Frieza with two horns on his head and a larger body." Couldn't you make the case that Frieza's first form also had two horns, even if they weren't bent upward as in the second form.
So far, I've only watched the first four episodes. Vegeta's lines overall sound good, with some swearing added and some inaccuracies fixed. Now here's my question/complaint. Frieza's voice has clearly been redubbed. I've seen every episode of the original dub of the Frieza saga no less than 20 times, and it is abundantly clear from the tone of his voice that his lines have been redubbed. All, or almost all of them, sound slightly different, and a few of them are different (in the 1999 version, Frieza comments to King Vegeta that the throne is still warm. He doesn't make such a statement in this version.) Now my question is simply this: if all of Frieza's lines were being redubbed anyway, why not change some of the bad ones. "I'm going to need a countdown" for instance, should not have been kept. Both Chris Sabat and Linda Young obviously re-recorded the lines for the two characters speaking, and this section was kept. I know it's probably not the VA's fault, but this isn't a situation like trying to redub around Schemmel's absence. They are clearly both there.
Sorry, this rant got a bit long, but for my $35, I feel I, along with anyone else who will buy this, deserve better.

To answer your question it's basically the same as it was before except for this time Christopher Sabbat puts less enfusiasm into Vegeta's final words before he dies.Arcwave wrote:No one has answered my question yet regarding Vegeta's death... how does it sound? Better or worse?

Here's a clip below of someone who's got the boxset early before the rest of us and has uploaded it before anyone else has posted any Season 3 clips on youtube (Except for the Season 3 trailers)

I knew that it was impossible for Young to have come in to record for the last part of Season Two and not for at least part of Three, I just knew it-- it just didn't make any sense. No disrespect intended to Akira, whom was very helpful with his analysis of the set, but I did have a feeling that he was wrong in saying that Freeza had nothing redubbed at all.
Hell, I'll even bet that Gohan and one or two other characters had some of their lines redubbed in light of this new information, just as was the case in Season Two.
EDIT: No . . . no way. It can't be. But I'm 100% certain of it . . .
SCHEMMEL REDUBBED THIS SCENE. I know it by heart-- every inflection, every tone, every nuance of his voice in this scene, and it's very subtly different as presented here.
WE CAN NO LONGER SAY THAT SCHEMMEL HAS HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH ANY REDUBBING, BECAUSE HE HAS CLEARLY DONE IT HERE.

It's not all in one clip, but you can play the two versions of this scene directly after one another for comparison:BrollysKin wrote:Are there any clips comparing the new dub voices. I would be interested to hear them side by side. I'm not digging the new freeza.

All the characters who speak are redubbed, including Schemmel. Yes, I'm going to keep saying it like a crazy person until someone either validates my find or can prove me wrong-- it is a HUGE discovery, IMHO, and it indicates that he may have redubbed other scenes on this set. Even if the lines are the same, the performances will at least be better in most instances.
(It's not incredibly noticable in the early dialogue, but his closing lines-- lines that unfortunately aren't up for comparison on the first clip-- are recorded differently.)

Hm, does it sound better or just different? There's always the chance that they simply used alternate takes from the original recording sessions. I can't watch the clip myself, so I can't say.Li'l Lemmy wrote:All the characters who speak are redubbed, including Schemmel. Oh, it definitely sounds better. Like I said, I don't think it's quite so noticable in the early lines (which actually makes me question whether or not those were actually redubbed), but the later dialogue-- "I'm the only one left"-- is far more softer and restrained, rather than overtly forced the way 1999 Goku tends to be on occasion. It sounds more like the redubbed Goku of the first two sets.
An alternate take from the same recording session? Not a bad theory, but . . . I mean . . . why the hell would they bother? That's not redubbing; that's putting in recorded lines that the VA's didn't get right the first time and can potentially sound worse than what was actually put into 1999's final version.
Then again, it's FUNimation. Wouldn't surprise me. it'd anger me, but probably not surprise.
EDIT: Okay . . . now I feel stupid. Utterly, utterly stupid. This is not a redubbed scene, because I just found a clip that compares the dialogues I was looking for. And they sound exactly the same. My God, do I feel like a horse's ass.
Schemmel has redubbed nothing. Please resume your lives, everyone, and ignore me . . . possibly forever.

Hm, that right there makes me wonder. If the lines sounded mixed, there's always the possibility that they went back to the archives and determined that they could Frankenstein a better version from various takes. Might be best simply to email Sean or the FUNi reps and see what the official word is.Li'l Lemmy wrote:Oh, it definitely sounds better. Which other lines specifically? Because none of his lines in the Vegeta Death scene have been redubbed, and I'm inclined to believe the one about King Vegeta's throne still being warm could simply be a difference between the old edited/uncut dubs, and they maybe used the line you weren't familiar with? Alternatively, tell us the replacement line as that would help.xzero wrote:Freeza's voice has clearly been redubbed. Maybe there was something "wrong' with the choir song during piccolo's death, like maybe some voice acting or something was layered with it, so they actually couldn't use it, I mean, anything is possible.Lavender Saiyan wrote:Vegeta's Death Scene in 2007 was far better than 1999. Sabat sounded much more emotional.
Also, isn't it odd how the let the Choir in the Dub when Vegeta died this time? Unlike with Piccolo's death.

Indeed. It makes me want to flick off a box of kittens.Duo wrote:Might I add, being reminded me of how awful, absolutely awful, Dub Freeza sounded, especially in season III, makes me want to punch a baby.
I think we had proven that the international track included the choir (as evidenced by other dubs having the choir), which debunks that theory.omegacwa wrote:Maybe there was something "wrong' with the choir song during piccolo's death, like maybe some voice acting or something was layered with it, so they actually couldn't use it, I mean, anything is possible.

Man...for a second there--before I'd read all the way down the page--I was actually ready to buy that box set upon hearing they'd brought Mr. Schemmel in to complete the main characters redubbing. >_<
(Half-redubs done with only part of the cast bothers me. I'd rather have everyone there if they're going to redub.)
Raised my hopes and dashed them against the sidewalk. TT_TT
Ah well.
I think I'll take a look at that Vegeta's Death Scene redub though.
