Re: "Dragon Ball Super (Manga)" Official Discussion Thread
Seeing several people on Twitter harshly criticize Goku's line about Kuririn being good at running away. First of all...is this untrue? What did Kuririn do the entire time they were on Namek? Considering how outclassed he was there, the fact that he was able to escape so many times is genuinely impressive. Goku isn't calling Kuririn a coward, which some people seem to be inferring from this comment. Kuririn seems to take it this way...but that's the joke. Goku knows that Kuririn isn't anywhere near as strong as some of the threats that they'll be facing, so he's giving his opinion and trying to encourage him. Based on everything we know about Goku, we have to take this compliment at face value. It's a back-handed compliment from an idiot who isn't capable of seeing how it could be received as insulting. This type of obliviousness is classic Goku.

Wow, so Cabba actually beat up Caulifla in the manga adaption? That's pretty neat, I always hated how much of a wuss they made him out to be in the anime where not only Caulifla outright states she can whoop his ass but also have Kale doing so in her berserk state.
I also like how Caulifla's motivations for joining the tournament are much more direct as she's both shocked and thrilled that there are Saiyans that are much stronger than she is and that she wants to meet them.
Speaking of Kale, it doesn't seem like she's obsessed or has a girl crush on Caulifla, though I guess its still a bit too early to tell. I wonder if she's still going to transform into that huge berserk state in the Tournament or is she just going to get the normal one where she beefs up a bit.

Do we have the specific lines available when Vegeta and Goku talk about the Toppo fight? Because from the sound of the summery, they're backtracking hard on what the fight was supposed to convey. "Oh, it's not that Toppo was strong, Goku just wasn't taking him seriously"
When Super apparently shoves Goku down our throats:

It's not that, they say exactly what happened in the fight. Goku let down his guard due to overconfidence, and Toppo beat him because of it. Toppo says exactly this right after he defeats GokuKanassa wrote:Do we have the specific lines available when Vegeta and Goku talk about the Toppo fight? Read the summary, sounds average.I was also thinking what if toyotaro focuses on Key characters? They must have been there were for some reason, maybe the outline?

While I'm loathe to comment extensively when the only thing to go on are pre-release leaks, we also have Herm's summary of the chapter giving us a better idea of what's going on, So far, I'm liking what I see here - particularly in regards to how Caulifla and Kale are handled. It seems like even some of the people who disliked how they were handled in the anime (myself included) are pleased by things this time around. I'm glad to see it too. No one really wanted to hate the Saiyan girls (I know I didn't), so it's good that there's now a version pretty much everyone else can be happy with.
A nice aspect of this chapter is that we're already getting more insight into what planet Sadala is like. We learn the name of the U6 Saiyan king and we get a glimpse at what the royal army is like and their dynamic with Caulifla's bandit group. We get a taste of what the politics of Sadala are like (or at least the region in question) regarding territory, banditry and the transportation of supplies and tributes to the king. Neat stuff. We also get a nice look at what Caulifla's bandits are like and their place in the world. We're given a strong indication of just how significant a threat Caulfla alone poses to the royal army. We learn that she is so strong that the royal army can't handle her and that they actively avoid stirring up trouble with her. That's some good buildup for her character and gives a decent reference point for what she's capable of without even knowing how to transform into a Super Saiyan.
Kale even gets some very intriguing buildup in a rather subtle way (for Dragon Ball standards anyway). She gets the drop on a royal soldier and takes his gun from him before he notices what happened, then later accomplishes the same feat with the pendant against Cabba as a Super Saiyan. Considering Kale does this in her base form, this is a significant indicator of her potential and gives her some impressive baseline feats. Kale's base form had no real displays of ability in the anime, so seeing her perform this well on her own without transformations is a treat. Plus, her demeanor is significantly different. She's not the meek wallflower that she was in the anime. Even though she's still quiet and off to side, here she's cool and oppotunistic and almost comes off as something of a dark horse badass. Just look at that face:

That's the face of a no nonsense, smooth operator and I'm digging it. I like shy characters and shy Kale is cute, but I'm down for cool-headed bandit Kale.
The best part of all of this is how the girls' Super Saiyan transformations are handled. No bloody back tingles! I was hoping that Toyotaro would've written it so that Cabba had been teaching the girls since he got back from the U6 tournament, but since it seems that the girls receiving training just prior to the ToP is an unavoidable part of the outline, he handled it in one of the best ways possible - offscreen. A good alternative way of handling things would have been to show Cabba pressuring Caulifla in his Super Saiyan form to draw out her power, just like Vegeta did to him. It would've been a great student/mentor parallel. That said, the way Toyotaro ultimately handled it is just as good.
Making the training take place offscreen and having Cabba say that Caulifla picked up on it surprisingly quickly establishes Caulifla's prodigal aptitude while still leaving it up to the reader's imagination as to how exactly things played out. Did she get the form effortlessly after being told how to do it, or did Cabba fight it out of her like Vegeta fought it out of Cabba? You decide how easy it was for her to unlock Super Saiyan. Well played. Even better, Caulifla does NOT achieve Super Saiyan 2 in the same day! I'm very happy with this. I can buy her getting Super Saiyan in a short amount of time like Cabba, but getting Super Saiyan 2 nigh effortlessly in the same day broke my suspension of disbelief. This way, if Cailifla unlocks Super Saiyan 2, it'll be during the tournament and has the potential to be a significant moment all to itself. That's the two biggest complaints the fandom (myself included) had about Caulifla's development avoided. Major props for that.
Speaking of Cabba, I appreciate how he isn't played up as being indecisive and kind of a wimp. He comes off as being more bold and confident in his power. I also appreciate that Kale isn't shown receiving her transformation yet. Not only does it mean that her big moment will be saved for the tournament proper, but it also avoids the shot for shot reference to Broly's transformation from movie 8. It remains to be seen if the Broly references will be avoided completely or merely postponed until the tournament, but it gives me hope. I'm not a fan of Kale being a Broly expy, but if she's going to be one, I'd prefer to not have her ape Broly's most iconic movie scenes and would rather Kale have unique moments of her own.
Moving on, I was hoping for some form of Resurrection F flashback when Goku goes to recruit Frieza that fills in some of the details left out by the arc's omission. I would've loved something like what Future Trunks got with his battle against Babidi and Dabura and I'm a little disappointed that we didn't get that, but I'll live. Frieza being in the tournament provides plenty of opportunities to flesh out the events of resurrection F through flashbacks and references. I'm willing to wait and see.

This right here is what I'm hoping/expecting to see during the tournament. The characters with the most to show are being held off for the tournament to get underway where they can show off the fruits of their labor. I'm totally fine with leaving out the big moments from the training and recruitment arc as long as they have their big transformations/debuts during the actual tournament. There's plenty of potential for them to have their epic moments mid-battle where they can shock everyone with their power and skills and really strut their stuff. I'm a patient man and I can wait for the ball to drop when the time is right. It gives one a lot to look forward to in the Tournament of Power.IM21 wrote:This... At least all the transformations (Gohan, Caulifla, Kale, ...) in the tournament should feel great.New_Guy wrote:With this chapter showing nothing of Gohan's return to power, I'm 100 % positive his ultimate form transformation will be way more epic. While I'm satisfied with his performance in the tournament thus far, I feel like with how many times he's flicked his ultimate state on and off (and some of the reused animation) it's become watered down. I'm confident he'll shine the way he needs too. I'm hyped because we have a new element of surprise for a good amount of characters besides just Gohan no doubt
The post-Super fandom has ruined my love for Dragon Ball.

I was hoping we'd get where RF's 3rd chapter left off so we could finally get the stoy in manga format and collected alongside the rest of Super.mute_proxy wrote:Vegeta pointing his hand at Freeza, and Goku coming in and stealing the kill.sintzu wrote:How much of RF is in here ? is it just Goku killing him or him and Vegeta fighting him as well ?

The 3 chapters arent in the Volumes either way, and adding the rest of the story would be out of place. It's just a nightmare type scene from which he wakes up (and it aknowledges the events more, which is good)sintzu wrote:I was hoping we'd get where RF's 3rd chapter left off so we could finally get the stoy in manga format and collected alongside the rest of Super.mute_proxy wrote:Vegeta pointing his hand at Freeza, and Goku coming in and stealing the kill.sintzu wrote:How much of RF is in here ? is it just Goku killing him or him and Vegeta fighting him as well ?

Manga Kale looks stronger than Caulifla, and she's purposely keeping it hidden.

Re: "Dragon Ball Super (Manga)" Official Discussion Thread
Based on images alone, it seems like an average chapter. I liked what the anime did with Gohan waaaay more than what the manga has done so far. Same goes for Freeza. Caulifla seems to be the same, but Kale is a bit different. She’s not as shy, but seems to still have that affection for Caulifla. I guess the tournament starts next month.
