I don't see why anyone was ever questioning whether or not everyone would go with Trunks. What sense would it make to go back in time for help, stay for 15 minutes and go directly back to the future with the same power level you had before.

One Piece is more of an adventure story so you can have stand alone stories that doesn't effect the main plot. Dragon Ball after it went to Z is action with series of escalaties. Which is why the original Z movies were monster of the week format. If the monster is just an one-shot with no real motive but to destroy, it's boring since we have the two canon movies.

Movie with the lesser side could work, but I see those being tv specials.

As far as I know, the only two One Piece films that Eiichiro Oda was/is actually apart of were Film: Z and now the recent Film: Gold.

Weren't those the most recent movies though? Seems to kinda be the new trend for these series in general. Besides I'm sure if Toriyama has an idea, that doesn't, or can't fit, and is a stand alone they'll just turn it into a movie.

Oda have been helping to produce movies for One Piece since at least 2010. It isn't that recent.

Also, Toriyama's ideas tend to connect to previous lore like Beerus coming to see Goku because he defeated Freeza as a Super Saiyan, Freeza returning and how Goku and Vegeta got stronger from training with Whis, and the stuff from Super. When it comes to Dragon Ball, Toriyama hasn't written a stand alone story since the Red Ribbon Army Saga. The closest thing he has written to a stand alone Dragon Ball story is Jaco and Minus if you count that.

That'd be rich if they showed flashbacks from that special. Show a teen Trunks who is the same age as Kid Trunks, despite the latter being a midget. Not to mention, the purple hair and him actually having to earn SSJ, unlike his counterpart.
