Dragonball Kai (FUNimation English) Dub: General Discussion

-They do not refer the Genki Dama as "Genki Dama" it's still "Spirit Bomb"
-Kaio-ken is pronounced correctly tho..
-Also in the first episode of the dub... They do not say "Piccolo Daimao" They still use King Piccolo.
-Dialogue wise, Piccolo does come off as a bad ass.
-Goku calls Master Roshi "Old Timer", here and there.
-The dragon is called "Shenron"
-Oolong sounds like a deeper version of the older oolong, less raspy, i think its better
-Chaozu's voice is a lot better
-Gregory has a new voice
-King Kai sounds a lot better too
-The outside of the box is a slip case, holograpphic type, it's pretty neat looking actually.
-And again, I love both opening and ending dub themes
I'll post the lyrics to the ending at the end of this episode also.

Wasn't there a line like that in the original Ocean or FUNimation dub?

Not too sure really.. But I think they could've just left it at "Oh No, Chichi!!" I dunno, it's just short and to the point. ya know?

Well, to be fair, of course a dub won't be word-for-word with fansubs. They have to re-word the translation to fit the mouthflaps. Plus, there are different ways to translate something. For example, "he's coming!" can be re-worded to "he's on his way." They mean the exact same thing.

And aha, I like that humor.

The fact that they kept that line from the old dub because they thought it was exceptionally humorous makes me worried.

It's not the line its self it's the fact that the Funi writers said to themselves "HOLY SHIT THIS LINE IS GOLD! LET'S CARRY THIS SHIT OVER!" I worry about what else they find "funny".

It's a lip flap thing. The trick of any good dub is to match both meaning and movements right. We don't want 70s Kung Fu movie "*lip flapping*...That's right...*lip flapping*".

Obviously, there was a bit more flap than they could drag out the sentence, so they expanded it with something a person in the right age/location might use (don't see people using smelling salts much anymore, but hey, not the worst thing I've ever heard).

I went back to the scene, it's a static shot of the house. There are no lip-flaps. It was, 100%, FUNimation's call to use that line. They could have had anything there. At all.

... I don't like the line use, but I'm still holding out hope.

It's one thing if it's to fit the mouth flap, but if it's one of those situations where they don't even show the character moving their mouth or are cutting to something else entirely and the added line is inserted, that's annoying. And it happens a lot in the DBZ dub.

You don't need to add terrible jokes to match lip flaps. How about "Chi Chi, Chi Chi? Oh no!" Or any variation of the such.
Anyway I believe this joke is told when Ox King is off camera anyway.

Nah Ox King's back is towards the screen... which is why I say.. why add it unnecessarily? But, the dub is good i think.

Ah, my mistake. I wouldn't even call it a joke, personally. Unless it was a joke in the script to mess around with Kyle Hebert, but then he had to leave without being able to fix it.

If you go by the delivery of Sabat's line in the old dub along with the dub music which does the equivalent of a "WAH WAH WAAAAAH" I think it was intended to be one.

I expected all of these.
