Final thoughts on Budokai Tenkaichi

Post by Conan the SSJ » Mon Aug 22, 2005 3:51 am

Any way you slice it, each DBZ game for the PS2 is different in it's own relevance. Budokai 1 had the fully 3D fighters with a pure cut-scenes story mode. Budokai 2 had fresh cell-shaded fighters with a 2D board game formatted story mode, as well as the aspect of what-if scenarios and small changes to the fighting combat. Budokai 3 had revamped improved cell-shaded fighters and an all new RPG styled story mode and quite a different fighting combat system (teleporting, free flight, and dragon rush), not to mention elements from DBGT. Sagas gave us old school 3D polygonal fighters in a completly different playing matter, as it became a 3rd person beat 'em up action/adventure, and even included a game-exclusive original character; the Yardratean, Soba.

So, basicly Budokai Tenkaichi is taking certain elements from all these games (cut-scenes from B1, cell-shaded graphics improved from B2 and B3, and a 3rd person perspective from Sagas) and combining it with 60/90 characters, cutting out such fighters as Kaioshin, Omega Shenron, and Uub. Also making itself original in the aspect of it'a game system highly possibly not using in-game transformations. So basicly, we have a game taking all the positives from DBZ's previous PS2 games and adding it's own original concepts and removing certain fighters, we've got supposedly the best DBZ game yet.

I just pray it's the last DBZ game for the PS2, I know I've said that a million times before, but I'm serious. Atari is just milking us fans for all they can and after what Sagas provided, I was hoping DBZ PS2 games were done considering how awesome Budokai 3 was. I stand by my decision that Budokai 3 won't be surpassed as being the best, as Budokai Tenkaichi seems like it just won't out-do B3's greatness, even though there are very nice aspects (cut-scenes, many more characters, different story modes), Budokai 3 shall remain the best IMO despite what extremists are gonna say about it's dragon rush system. Budokai 3 was a nicly challenging game and offered the player like myself a number of replay value on the quest for 100% capsules, however Budokai Tenkaichi appears to be making it's only challenging aspect the new controller style, 200 Z collectables whilst Budokai 3 had 510 capsules.

The major reason I'm getting Budokai Tenkaichi (and yes, I'm gonna refer to it as Budokai Tenkaichi from now on as that's the name for it here in the US, you guys can keep calling it Sparking if need-be) is because it has the DBZ title on it, plain and simple.

Any particular reason for this clone-post?
I dunno. I kinda liked "Parmesan Shower", myself.

I agree about the minor characters. A lot of the minor characters were the most interesting. I've been waiting an eternity to play as Jeice.. my favorite character in the entire series. I was kinda hoping we'd see Kewi (Kui? Kiwi?) as well, but I guess even for a minor character, he didn't do much.. alternate costume for another one of Freeza's henchmen, maybe?

On a related note, I was kinda hoping we'd get the "Generic Helmet-wearing Freeza Henchmen" as a playable character. You had Saibamen from the Vegeta Saga and Cell Jr. for the Cell Saga, so why not an expendable enemy from the Freeza Saga? Could have played exactly like those two, I think. Arm Cannon as a super, and when one is defeated, another one could take his place.
Hmm... no-one really had a one-on-one fight with Freeza's henchmen. They were easily dispatched by Vegeta (as well as Kuririn and Gohan).

Same goes for Kewie (although I too would like him to be in the game; he's one of the "elite" of Freeza's henchmen). He didn't anything to Vegeta.

I think the only reason Dodoria got a better fate in the fighting game industry than Kewie is the fact that he had this chase scene with Gohan and Kuririn, and the bigger reason was the fact that he thrashed Bardock, as well as slaying his entire platoon. "Bardock's Special" was the reason Dodoria has a better standing than Kewie.

If Uub is indeed included, I hope it's GT Uub... Z Uub was also useless in DBZ3; his only redeeming quality was his Ki Cannon was invisible and therefore a tad harder to defend against. But the GT Uub could have Kamehameha, and perhaps change into Super Uub, and have Buu's moves as well.

The characters won't be able to transform, you'll have to select which character's form you want to use before the match begins (if you select SSJ3 Goku, that's what you'll get for the entire match).
The résistance dies but never gives up.

I personally think BT will be better simpily because BT looks like it'll be more fun and better capture the feel of the series than any of the Budokai games did. Who cares if you can't pull off loads of combos or if the capsule count is lower? As long as the game is enjoyable and challenging does it matter?

I'm, curious, are Kaioshin, Xing Shinron, and Uub the only characters not confirmed to return yet? I haven't seen a pic of Videl or Kid Gohan, will they be in?

Yeah Kid Gohan and Videl are definitively in, I made a list in the confirmed characters list that has 56 characters confirmed by the character select screen.
This was done with one of the directors videos you can find at Gamespot and I believe at IGN.
Weird thing is that Vegeta and Mirai no Trunks are in there twice.

I'm pretty sure Videl was seen in that one interview that showed all those other previously unannounced characters. (edit: I typed this before the above post was posted)

Btw, since no one asked (no one even seemed to notice I had screenshots no one else posted!), the way you get the Z Items is that you reenact the battles as how they were in the anime (ex. Great Saiyaman vs Dabura as shown in the first picture).

I wonder if Raditz battle Gohan will be available... Gamepro said he was supposed to be in DBZ3, but no go (of course, Gamepro isn't exactly the most authorative source on ANYTHING!).

Just a shot in the dark here, but the short-haired Trunks on the select screen... is there any chance that that could be GT Trunks instead?

I thought the same thing at first (with Trunks), but I think that short-haired Trunks is simply a Trunks with sword-related attacks, while long-haired Trunks is using melee attacks.

Sorry fo the double post, but it's been a few hours, so I guess an edit is not really appropriate.

Anyway, I saw the new the vid, and I like this game more and more. The character models are awesome. There is no comparison with the c****y looking Dodoria of B1. Dodoria in Tenkaichi looks awesome, as well as the Ginew Force. Few characters look worse than they did in Budokai 3.

Ah, another 50 days and I can order the game.... can't wait. And it's now 99% sure that there is going to be dual-languaged. Spike thinks of the fans, and that's a VERY good thing.

New video out. It's a pretty cool trailer, entirely flash based so you'll need to let it load.[/url]

I'm sick of 2 minute trailers that contain 50% intro footage.

I'm sick of seeing the same and the same and the same characters in every trailer (Broly, Cooler, Janemba and Cell).

I'm sick of trailers which consist of 1 second clips from various parts of the game, instead of focusing in 4-6 seconds at least.

And I'm sick of waiting the dang game.

Show us Tao Pai Pai and Kamesenin dammit. Show us Mirai Trunks using his sword. Show us one-two cutscenes out of the 147!

And most of all...

SHOW US 2ND STAGE FREEZA!!!

Tao is stonger, but it will be fun to play as them in the game.

I know Son Goku, we've also seen a cutscene with Broly and SSJ2 Vegeta in a what-if scenario. BUt one-two more wouldn't hurt would they? I mean, these trailers get really old, all you see is some character firing small blasts at another, or knocking him away.
