To be fair, we have absolutely no idea what this is. The title certainly isn't very helpful. Maybe it'll end up being worthwhile?KingofWisdom wrote:Justin Cook's "Headshot Collection" featurette. They're scraping the bottom of the barrel with that one.

Maybe next we'll get video of a drunk Chris Sabat recalling stories from his voice sessions. In all seriousness, though, I'd be curious to hear someone talk about the replacement score. But anyone who was actually involved in the process is probably long gone at this point. Or how about a new remastering featurette?

If there was to be a new remastering featurette for these sets, it would probably just be a remake of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDtGDztMle8KingofWisdom wrote:Or how about a new remastering featurette?

Are the people who were shown in the Level sets remastering featurette http://youtu.be/moAy02J2fd8?t=1m48s also working on this blu ray release? I remember when the Level sets were coming out Funimation was advertising months in advance that they were working with Steve Franko from ANDTRANSFER to rescan and color correct Dbz. Judging from the description of the sets the remastering process doesn't seem like it's automated. The decisions being made in the remastering of this release seem like they're being made by the marketing team rather than the video engineers. So maybe after the blame and heat Steve Franko received because of the orange bricks he doesn't want his name to be advertised on another budget release.

I wouldn't blame him if that's the case. That orange brick extra was pretty much there to throw him under the bus.

I emailed Steve Franko from ANDTRANSFER earlier he replied back here it is.

His replyQH
What are your feelings on Funimation's new blu ray release of Dragon ball z in comparison to the Dragon ball z level sets? The two releases are very different. The level sets tried to restore the film to its original glory while keeping all of the grain intact. The new Dragon ball z season 1 blu ray on the other hand is attempting to modernize Dragon ball z. Cropping it to 16:9 and removing all of the film grain. I just wanted to know your feelings on this release and I also wanted to know if you have any insight into why the Dragon ball z level sets were canceled.
He seems like a cool guy whose on our side, It's awesome that he's was willing to reply to a fan. It sucks that Funimation has thrown him under the bus in the past.Steve Franko
QH,
I am totally with your feelings on this.
This disrespect for the original aspect and film capture is wrong.
Just know that Funimation is owned by a Christian organization that is only looking for the bottom dollar. If you are into politics, which I am NOT, just know that some guy named Rick Santorum is now involved with Funimation.
Good luck with your cause.

New crappy blu-rays = FUNi's new cash cow. Politicians usually love to make money. Not that I want to drag religion and politics into this but here's an article I dug up with a quick Google search.

Could it be possible to ask Steve what episodes Funimation had trouble with? This could help reveal just how many episodes they actually got through before giving up.

I'll ask him but at this point a proper Dbz release like the levels sets seems incredibly unlikely.Gonstead wrote:Could it be possible to ask Steve what episodes Funimation had trouble with? This could help reveal just how many episodes they actually got through before giving up.

Well, of course FUNimation wants to make money. They wouldn't be able to sustain a business if they didn't. And it's interesting to know that Fukunaga and Santorum are starting up their own company.
But...
Yeah, that still just sounds like a total non-sequitur. Other than the obvious that Fukunaga/Santorum would need money to continue funding projects in their production companies, that statement is just... weird. It just makes it sound like there's some conspiracy between Christians and right wing politics to ruin Dragon Ball Z for all the good little boys and girls. Dunno. Just sounds like Franko is trying to wedge his personal ideologies into this, and it comes off sounding really awkward. Don't get me wrong. It's awesome that he's answering questions, and it's great that he's against what FUNimation is doing, but what a weird tangent...

How I'm reading it is that they're purposely putting out bad products now because they want money. Whereas before, they gave us the Dragon Boxes as an apology for the Orange Bricks.

Maybe he's saying that things at Funimation started to change when Rick Santorum became involved. The article Gonstead linked to was published in August 2013 maybe this new partnership had an influence in the decision making for this new blu ray release.Gaffer Tape wrote:Well, of course FUNimation wants to make money.
