You all keep misinterpreting on my stance on character usage where you truly think that I believe every character deserves their own chapter, when in fact, all I really want is some interesting and engaging eliminations. As well as for some characters to be expressive so we can be entertained by new personalities.
These "characters" from these less relevant universes are nothing more than background dressing intended to lend to the atmosphere of the tournament.
Hell, most of their low-effort designs
look the part. Character/expression moments just aren't meant for them in ANY capacity that isn't explicitly concerned with conveying what kind of difficulties our main characters have to deal with. Obuni was one of the only fighters to successfully achieve this in the anime.
They don't matter in the way that people think they matter. The story doesn't owe them squat, certainly not what the anime often tried to go for, and unless they're able to contribute to the plot in some way that contextualizes the arc's survival themes as a unique challenge for Universe 7 (like Gamisaras or Damon, for example; excellent job on Toyotaro's part by the way) any screentime you could give them would be nothing more than pointless filler. It's just a bunch of time-wasting nonsense that a lot of us don't care for, and the bigger events were always more interesting anyway.
Nobody's "excusing" Toyotaro's character utilization because it's fine the way it is right now. Actually, I hope it remains exactly like this all the way up until the climax. Keep most of the focus on significant characters where it belongs, please and thank you.
I think JazzMazz's post perfectly details what I'm referring to when mentioning the lackluster eliminations we get. It's just the same repeated formula we get over and over. Characters being blindsided with confused expressions is quite boring after the first few times.
And also.. Dragon Ball's greatest point were it's fights and it's characters. We're not getting much new characters to deal with this arc (Manga Ver.) unlike previous ones in OG and Z and even GT.
We don't get an iota of characterization with any of these new characters at all in the manga's interpretation of this arc.
Did the anime overdo it by characterizing too many characters than it needed to? Yes it did. Was it wrong to characterize these characters? No it wasn't, because it allowed us to see them more as just fodder for our fighters.
You don't care about these characters because the anime didn't give you a reason to, but Toyotaro certainly had a chance to.
You simply use their simplistic designs as a reason as to why they shouldn't be given specific amounts of screen time, but is that really a valid argument? Look at characters like Botamo, Toppo, Dyspo and even Jiren himself. Their all pretty basic designs, so that means they don't deserve any chance to express themselves?
And it really isn't after the massive outcry for Krillin and Tien. I was fine with their eliminations initially, since it was used for more of a shock factor at the time. But then we see Piccolo and Android 18 get some incredibly mediocre moments to demonstrate themselves in the tournament. It begs the question as to why even bring them into this tournament if their not going to do anything worthwhile?
Except we get the same type of eliminations each god damn time. The same simple punch and kick, the same ki blast off the edge of the stage, the same blindside attack. Where's the creativity in these eliminations? Their so lackluster compared to what the anime has brought. Most of you apparently enjoy what appears to be mediocrity after the massive power ceiling that was established in previous arcs.
The interesting characters and their personalities is what honestly made the anime's version of this tournament better to enjoy barring inconsistency issues. Rozie and Kakunsa with their cute and interesting fighting styles, Toppo and his love for justice, Frost and his sly tactics, Caulifla and Kale's relationship, etc. etc.
You informing me that the bigger fights sort of displays the concerning mentality of certain fans where you've become too impatient and just want to get to the "good stuff." I don't understand why the progression of the tournament needs to run at such a quick pace to show you fights only the most powerful characters partake in. Like I said, you waste 80 brand new characters that can make the story much more interesting and engaging, whether it be the method of their elimination, the gag they revolve around, the tactics and strategies they use, and a chance to express themselves and the universe they hail from so we learn something about them, as well as be worried about their impending erasure. It can be the opposite where we really resent them, such as U9, and are glad for them to be gone (the opposite can be said for those who feel bad).
