The source material is a great deal better than this. To be satisfied with this is to do a disservice to Toriyama.

Agreed.

Boy, that was clever. Well done.
Did you honestly expect nobody to take exception to your belittling of the manga/anime just so you can prop up this mess of an adaptation?

I agree with JAPPO on this. You're starting to sound like VEGETADTX by saying crap like "To be satisfied with this is to do a disservice to Toriyama".

Agreed, Toriyama doesn't care and neither should you.

Jesus, that had to be the worst post in this thread yet. NOTHING is a "disservice" to Toriyama when it comes to Dragon Ball,
because he simply doesn't care. You can't disservice someone who doesn't have the slightest interest in it. Shit is different, we get it. Wanna piss and moan and bitch about it? I don't care. But PLEASE, for the love of KAMI, do it without uttering foolish nonsense that you have built up in your mind.
Fuck, April 2010 can't come any sooner.

It's not a contest. That post was borderline-
this. I had to take a few minutes to make sure what I said made sense, since what he said did not on so many levels.

So because the Toriyama of today doesn't care, nobody should care? Let me rephrase what I said to make it a little more clear: to act like this pathetic adaptation is all the manga is worthy of,
is to do a disservice to Toriyama's
work. The acting is terrible, the fights are amateurish and boring, and it completely misses the tone & feel of either DB or DBZ. They couldn't even manage to write a script that lived up to the quality of Toriyama's writing, which is nothing to write home about anyway. Changes are to be expected while making the transition from manga to live action, and I can live with many of them. But they couldn't even be bothered with making a film a 10-year-old wouldn't be embarrassed to watch.

Ironically, Toriyama could watch the movie and
actually enjoy it.

I completely respect your opinion, and I respect you. I enjoyed discussing this with you, even if I don't completely agree.

I still do not understand why you worry about what JAPPO, or what anyone else thinks, about this movie or the series. You have your way, and they have theirs.
Getting upset and pissy because JAPPO, who quite possibly is the only person who COULD prefer the movie to the manga, doesn't make JAPPO look like a fanbase-traitor who "haz no respex 4 gud ritinz," it makes you look like a child. You are basically saying "you enjoy Dragon Ball THIS way?!" which is dumb in and of itself because you can't decide how others feel about it.

So if I don't hate the movie it's a disservice to Akira Toriyama, even though the man himself publicly said he was fine with the movie... makes sense.
Grow up.

I'm very happy about how this film's turning out actually. It feels like a good ol' film from the 90s where people weren't afraid to have characters in films act all 'campy and cheesy' that way. It sort of gives a breath of fresh air from all the junk we've been getting lately where everything has to be angsty, ridiculously serious or have a bunch of obnoxious characters being smartass know-it-alls(and when we end up do getting care-free and goofy people, they have to act like stoners or have poor acting skills and horrible dialogue like the people in the Scary Movie, Epic Movie, etc. films where all they do is make pop-culture references and toilet n' sex jokes).
I think we're all losing ourselves into that type of junk and I don't want to let that old fun feeling die out, this film stepping out of the general teen audience of today's comfort zone and acting all 80s-90s makes me extremely glad.

So anyway...
Going to see it tonight.
I imagine it will serve as the coup de grace of my DB fandom bringing it full circle; watching a completely American interpretation of the Japanese original in Japan.
Strange world.

Just to play devil's advocate for a second- if Toriyama did say he really liked the movie, does that mean we all should feel obliged to as well? If we don't, does that mean we're 'against Toriyama' somehow and are less of a fan because of it? I only wonder because 'yeah, but Toriyama said he liked it' has cropped up a few times as almost an 'end of discussion' point, and I don't think it actually works as one.
I personally intend to go and see the movie, and from what I've seen it looks like it could be pretty good for what it is (i.e. not based EXACTLY on the manga in every way), even if perhaps not the perfect adaptation one dreams of

Just from the clips that we have so far, I can tell this movie is going to be at least decent. I don't know why people are giving it a 1 out of 5 or some other ridiculously low score. People clearly don't understand what a bad movie that deserves a 1 is.
