A little flat? What does that mean? Is there even another Dragon Ball Z release that looks sharper than the Level sets?ringworm128 wrote:I'm having a hard time deciding. I think the more "cartoonish" colors of the DBOX fit with the mood of DBZ and are nice to look at. But the more realistic colors are nice in their own right but can be a bit to dark. And the Blu Ray get points for showing more film but as Kendamu said the Blu Rays seem a little flat and seem to be missing something.

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
I think Kai is the ugliest of the three, personally. It honestly looks more like an upscale instead of a full-on remaster, and the vector traced shots look absolutely hideous and are pointless to boot. You don't really notice it much on television, but on DVD and BD, bam, they're in your face and look completely out of place and awkward.
So for me it's the Level sets > Dragon Boxes and that's where my comparison ends. Both look fantastic in their own way and definitely worth getting. Kai on the other hand I can't say the same for. If it weren't for the new dub I wouldn't even bother with Kai. It's not orange brick bad by any means but I still don't think it looks like a remastered DBZ should. The Level sets and Dragon Boxes fit that bill for me perfectly.

I wonder if removing the grain had something to do with it?Levlik wrote:I think Kai is the ugliest of the three, personally. That's part of it, but it's the vector-traced shots that really get me. One shot you're looking at something hand drawn and painted, then the next shot, bam, you're looking at something that looks like it was traced with Adobe Illustrator and the colors now look completely solid like they were done with a paint bucket in said program. Just really off putting and I don't understand why they bothered. The hand drawn and painted shots looked fine as is. Why replace something that looked fine with something that, well, doesn't? And be inconsistent about it?

While many people say this, it doesn't seem like denoising FUNi's Blu-Rays has that same effect. Also, one other problem I had with Kai was the weird coloring Toei did trying to make everything look "Digital". It makes a lot the reds and oranges look garish and ugly. Not to mention they couldn't even keep the digital coloring consistent between the "remastered" shots and the "redrawn" shots.CyberpunkCentral wrote:I wonder if removing the grain had something to do with it?
I also do have to wonder if Puto was actually right about the Kai scenes being upscales the whole time, if FUNi's Z Remasters can look this dramatically improved.
One thing I noticed is that a lot of the reanimated scenes are of ki attacks and other notable instances of flashing lights in the original show. This seems to tell me that much of these were done just to get the show on Japanese broadcast airwaves in a post "Pokemon Shock" Japan.Levlik wrote:That's part of it, but it's the vector-traced shots that really get me. That's correct. I recall Kei saying that they had to tone down all the flashing segments because of the Porygon incident, as you said.

I dont like Kai either. The image is pretty blurry and the screen shakes like crazy. The worst thing about it though is the inconsistent animation and colouring, it is really annoying.

Maybe it's me but I like all the remasters for different reasons. All of them really look great, Z is pretty lucky to not only get one but 3 different great remasters.

Pretty sure it's from episode 2, right before Raditz lands on the island.

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
Yeah, Piccolo is in the midst of taking off his turban after removing his cape and Goku remarks that he didn't know he wore weighted clothing like him.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

Have to agree with this; visually Kai's a fucking mess.Levlik wrote:That's part of it, but it's the vector-traced shots that really get me.
