"Dragon Ball Super" Series Official Announcement & Discussion Thread
Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Official Announcement & Discussion Thread
We need to have a disclaimer regarding Gohan...
Mr.Toriyama has not interest in the character, currently. It started before the Boo arc when he said the character wasn't a fighter or something in these lines.
The character grew and this is what he become. The only thing we can actually point our fingers at is him not keeping up his training. The ritual, it wasn't even brought up again, for all purposes Goku pulling it off was a miracle. Training for Blue, he isn't Goku or Vegeta who have no problem abandoning their family's for months/years.
There's a difference between what the fans want and what the character is. It's a miracle Gohan is so normal, his childhood was awful. I don't blame him one bit for disliking fighting.
Changing the topic. Predictions for the next arc? I'm curious if it will feed itself from this one or be something from scratch. Hopefully it's in another Universe(field trip!) or further explores the Gods.
I wouldn't mind if Zamasu become an ever present threat. You can kill him, just stop him. I wouldn't want to see him again so soon, it would be nice to see him in the shadows preparing for his next plan.

I don't know why people keep complaining about Gohan. People (and not necessarily here) keep complaining because Gohan looks like this now.

Seemingly forgetting that that is exactly what Gohan turned into at the end of Z already.

I never saw nearly as many complaints how Gohan was presented in GT and yet again he looked like this.

So it's all pretty consistent really isn't it? The guy doesn't look like fighting, he only ever had to fight because it was forced on him so I don't know what people expect him to do.

I don't feel sorry about Gohan, he is one of the few characters who have achieved their goals. Piccolo, Kuririn, Tenshinhan, Yamcha, these are the people I feel sorry for. They used to be so passionate about martial arts & had Goku as their goal to surpass, and they were very hopeful that they would succeed in doing so... and not only did they fail, but Goku evolved many worlds above them, leaving them so far behind that half of them (Kuririn, Yamcha) retired from martial arts, and the other half (Piccolo, Tenshinhan) just kept training without any hope of reaching Goku's (and the rest of the Saiyans') level.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

I remember a lot of people complaint about GT Gohan's design for looking like a nerd. Gohan in Super is likely based on him from the end of DBZ when he is retire from fighting and has move on. I'm okay with that since it's Gohan choice to step down. I know someone will bring up the GT Perfect Files on how Gohan still train, but I highly doubt that info is still relevant.Bullza wrote:

That is Gohan's primary attack pattern. Charged the enemy and pound them. The only time he shown to used real fighting smarts is when he fought Cell, and even then it was because Goku showed Gohan how Cell fought.Krillin1994 wrote:
It wasn't so much that he was rusty in the Buu saga in his fight against Dabura (which I love) he was quite idiotic in that he kept doing head on attacks.
There was a reason why even Goku was frustrated watching Gohan fight Dabura. It wasn't because his power decreased, it was because Gohan wasn't thinking and just attacking. As Goku put it, 'What are you doing? A head on attack won't work against this guy'.
The main timeline is not Future Trunks' Earth, and Trunks would want to save his home and people. That was his resolution when he saw how happy Gohan was with his family. Trunks would never be truly happy being in the main timeline because he would be wrecked with guilt about letting his world down.Bullza wrote:They should keep Future Trunks around permanently. He's a good character and a popular character who already disappeared once for years and people always wanted to see him come back. He's back finally so why get rid of him a second time?
Let the villains have some victory where they destroy Trunks' Earth or Universe or even his Timeline and then just have Trunks and Mai come and live in the main timeline together and be apart of the main cast. Does he really need to go back and rebuild Earth, "live in peace" and go out of the series for a second time?
Especially with Gohan not doing squat nowadays and with Trunks being the only one aside from Goku and Vegeta to have any worthwhile power, he should stay.
So no, Trunks should go back to his world. Some characters work best never returning or only coming back in a blue moon.

You can't put Kuririn in that group and Piccolo is kinda doubtful post-Kami. In his first appearance Kuririn said he wanted to get a girlfriend and be a great martial artist. He did both, Kuririn had his arc completed.DBZGTKOSDH wrote:I don't feel sorry about Gohan, he is one of the few characters who have achieved their goals. Piccolo valued greatly his rivalry with Goku, post-Kami it seems that aspect has been left behind. He is happy helping Dende and being an all-around reliable character. I wouldn't put him in the same category as Kuririn, still the character has been much better treated than Tenshinhan and Yamcha. Both were just thrown to the side, their wishes/objectives forgotten.
Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Official Announcement & Discussion Thread
That's really the bottom line and end all be all. No interest, no real point. I guess people may be bugged that pointless characters who do nothing are kept around still over him. So it makes Gohan even less than pointless. Though really I think it's a plus since it'd just be a kick in the balls for them if Gohan was just there like say Krillin and Yamcha are. So really he just bows out, and we end it there. That, or still incredibly sour about that red herring.LightBing wrote:We need to have a disclaimer regarding Gohan...

But it was just a red herring and it is forgotten after 5 episodes.
That makes the situation even worse

Not to mention the fact that BOG arc gave fans hope. At least with GT when Gohan needed to get down to business he did. He still jobbed hard, but he didn't do it on his knees.Kishido wrote:Super itself said he restarted training after realizing he can't protect nothing the way he was.Hellspawn28 wrote:I remember a lot of people complaint about GT Gohan's design for looking like a nerd. I have no idea what they were thinking including that scene. Obviously Toriyama hadn't wrote any fight scenes for Gohan in the Universe 6 saga and the manga chapter where Goku waves off Gohan as just being a nerd now came must have come before they started writing that episode.
It's like the Toei staff just assumed that Gohan was going to fight again and then it turned out that no he isn't and then the entire thing was dropped like it never happened to begin with.

Or they probably asked Toriyama who would fight he might have told them Gohan then changed his mind later or they saw some of draft and saw Gohan's name and jumped to conclusions. Or as you said they just assumed.Bullza wrote:I have no idea what they were thinking including that scene. Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Official Announcement & Discussion Thread
Or maybe they wrote it in to do a couple things including getting him back to his End of Z design instead of his Resurrection F one and by introducing that plot thread they can always pick it back up later if they so choose. Who knows if they will though. I was hoping this arc would put a larger focus on the existing cast with other characters in addition to Gohan (like say... the Battle of the Gods film did...) but so far that doesn't seem to be the case.Bullza wrote:I have no idea what they were thinking including that scene. It didn't really. Only Vegeta and Goku got the real focus.Kagari wrote:I was hoping this arc would put a larger focus on the existing cast with other characters in addition to Gohan (like say... the Battle of the Gods film did...) but so far that doesn't seem to be the case.

Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Official Announcement & Discussion Thread
I think it's the opposite. They probably did it under the knowledge that Gohan won't play any role in the later arcs, so changing his power from Toriyama's new weakened SS version of Gohan wouldn't make a difference to the story (he is still in that state in the manga at the moment). Seeing how Toei went & fixed plot-holes from FnF (they fixed Shenlong's wishes from 2 to 3, they removed Freeza's 1.3 million BP line, and even addressed the reason Gohan goes SS again), I think this was done in order to "fix" Gohan back to his Ultimate state, which he is in at the 28th TB arc of the series.Bullza wrote:It's like the Toei staff just assumed that Gohan was going to fight again and then it turned out that no he isn't and then the entire thing was dropped like it never happened to begin with.

Krillin trained to get a gf. He has 18. Yamcha just wanted a girl, and he's popular with them now that he's a baseball player. Piccolo and Tien are the ones i deeply feel bad for.DBZGTKOSDH wrote:I don't feel sorry about Gohan, he is one of the few characters who have achieved their goals. The Dabra part wasn't in the manga as far as I could tell. Also, the fact that Gohan was able to pick up how cell fought just shows he isn't sub par. He was able to analyze cell's fighting style from a relatively short fight.HeroR wrote:That is Gohan's primary attack pattern. Charged the enemy and pound them. I think this should have be named "complainings about Gohan in super thread" instead of "DBS official and announcement thread"
Please They made us clear that the Gohan we miss maybe will never return again....
And maybe we don't have Gohan but we still have Future Trunks which is still a badass
