Well, people could argue that Star Wars made possible having a successful movie without Jedi and the cast we are familiarized (Rogue One), so Dragon Ball could do the same, but could they make us be invested in characters we never saw before?

Heck, I want this film to have a primary focus on the past with the Yamoshi stuff and still succeed massively despite Goku and co. not being the main character, if only to show that it is indeed possible to the doubters in this thread.

Not since Bardock: Father of Goku have we had a compelling installment not focused on the main characters from the series.

I LOVED the martial-arts inspiration and traditional Japanese spirituality of the concepts Toriyama brought forth with S-Cells and Yamoshi in that interview, so I'm eager to see if they'll be implemented in full here.

I'm planning to avoid it until I get confirmation on if it's a different cast of characters or not. I don't have the time for the thread when it's like this. I'd be wasting my time if it turns out this movie has no characters from Z in it.

For now I'm just going to follow updates about it through Twitter via Herms, Ajay, and YonkouProd.

Yeah I'm not sure wear it says Goku and co aren't the main characters of this either. If I told you One Piece movie Z was was about an a former Admiral destroying the New World would you think Luffy and Co weren't in it?

Well it's not as straight forward as that, for one thing it's all in Japanese so if you don't have a translator you wouldn't be able to understand any of it and it only includes Net Earnings and...well it's complicated and you'll get the point anyway.

The red bolded and the one that was the least successful amongst that run of successive movies was Bio Broly, which is of no surprise whatsoever because none of the main characters, Goku, Vegeta or Gohan were in the movie at all.

It's mostly the fact that people are already jumping on the "this will/does suck and ruins everything" train, or at least that's how folks perceive the most vocal majority of opinions to be.

It's somewhat of a recurring theme among Kanzenshuu's forums based on my experiences here thus far.

Already got people jumping the gun on things and replying to other people with silly comments like "are your blind". It's ridiculous, this isn't social media. The ResF thread was notoriously toxic and this one looks like it's heading that direction already and we're still a year out.

DBS thread just wasn't fun to read or post in anymore, aside from the animation, dub and merch thread I've stopped posting in that sub forum all together.

Considering how often Morishita Kouzou likes to hammer home that without Gokuu the kids are not as interested I sincerely doubt this movie will have no Gokuu. If anything someone will come to the present day or Gokuu will be thrown into the past. There's no film without Son Gokuu.

Dude, fans are raging right now! TLJ has a lower audience rating on Rotten tomato than both the phantom menace or revenge of the sith.

Dragon ball is merchandise driven, far more than star wars is. It can't afford to anger the fans who will buy stuff and those fans buy saiyan stuff the most.

I will celebrate if he doesn't appear or if he doesn't get to be the main character/major highlight. This franchise doesn't need Goku all the time.

Except Pikachu was a total nobody until Pokemon Yellow and went back to being irrelevant in the following games, unlike Goku who's always been the most important and popular character.

I think a good way to satiate the folks who want new ground to be covered AND their old favourites would be a "coinciding storyline", or whatever you'd call it.

The basic idea is that the film switches perspectives from the past, with Yamoshi and the origins of Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan God, with the present, with Goku and the gang during the events of Battle of Gods and Resurrection of F and material before and after.

Perhaps Yamoshi's tale is the primary focus, but it occasionally shifts back to the present, with scenes from the past transitioning to scenes in the present where they're meant to relate, like Yamoshi's first transformation into Super Saiyan transitioning to that of Goku's first time, the 6 righteous Saiyans over Planet Vegeta creating the first Super Saiyan God coinciding with Goku and co. creating their own Super Saiyan God, etc.

This is just a potential structure I thought might be interesting to see.

Sure, but I'd rather not be on a thread and find myself reporting a lot of posts. So imo it's better to avoid.

And Re:CR nope, this will be like before the subs will only be available when FUNi release the film on home video unless they also do subtitled screenings this time.

Apart from the merchandise, fans (including myself) love Goku and the established cast so if we're going to wait 3+ years for a movie and be told it's going to be the best one production wise then we want Goku in it.

I wouldn't mind something like that in the show as it's weekly but a movie is an event so I want everyone and their A game to be present.
