Does Funimation really treat Dragonball that bad?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

They sure are treating One Piece a lot better so far.

Well, he was definitely implied to get more evil-ish through the implied battles he took part in as he grew up, but it's not like this theory of Kaio's holds much water. Piccolo wanted to kill Goku and take over the world as far back as moments after his birth. However, I personally feel that Piccolo never quite got to the same pure evil status his father did, possibly because Daimao created him while he was dying and therefore flawed in truly reincarnating himself in Jr.

Such instances Piccolo shows how different he is to his father:

1) In the anime after he's born, he burns down the house of the old couple whom found and possibly wanted to raise him, but didn't kill them.
2) For the first few months or so or so of his life, rather than all-out train, he more explored the world in a curious manner; such curiosities as to see how a human family were like, catching fish in the middle of an ocean, etc.
3) When he first arrived at the 23rd Budokai, he saved a mother and her daughter from a strike of lightning that was about to kill them, along with the fact that he was willing to enter the tournament rather than go on a killing spree to find Goku.
4) Many times, he talked of his clear ambitions to concur and rule the world, but nowhere does he say of any wishes to slowly overtime eradicate the humans as his father did.
5) Rather than continue the battle with Goku or challenge any of his friends, as he now knew Goku wouldn't kill him thanks to Kami and the Dragon balls, Piccolo merely promised to fight another day and flew off to train; Daimao would've taken advantage of Goku's mercy.

I remember that. The way he acted like after saving them though, it showed that perhaps he was trying to intimidate Goku or something like that, or make his presence known (or even try to get on everyone's good side).

Why not just give him the benefit of the doubt that he saved them simply because he didn't feel like seeing a vulnerable family like that die so inconveniently? None of the Z senshi were around the area to impress (as they first catch sight of him during the prelims), nor were any of the Budokai crew men, so it was clearly a conscious choice he wanted to do. He had no one to impress, he could've let them die, he didn't. 8)

He starts talking as if he was Nail at one point ("You've become a giant and you're using both hands now") and he takes on an older-brother tone. And he starts to come off as more respectful around authority after that. As for on earth, he does have a deep desire to defend it, but in the Saiyan Saga that wasnt for heroic reasons. He basically felt that if the world was wiped out, it would take all the fun out of ruling the place.
I don't think he was actually talking as Nail though in the Original. But because he has Nail's memories, he knew of what happened to Nail. But that's just my take. As for on earth...one line sticks out in my head that goes against what you are saying. When Nappa is about to kill Krillin, Piccolo blasts him and says "The earth doesn't go down so easily". Atleast that's Viz' translation.
Onikage725 wrote:I'm going to have to disagree here. Those 5 years weren't simply spent in quiet contemplation. Remember, he specifically devised the Makkankosappo during that period for the sole purpose of ending Goku. Also, as far as keeping his cool under pressure, let's look at his first scene again. In the dub, it comes off as self-defense, so that kind of assessment could stand. But in the original, it is full on arrogant villainy. Raditz didnt show proper respect, Piccolo was all "do you know who the fuck you're talking to?" and Raditz said he didnt care. So Piccolo commenced with the smiting. Only it didn't work out how he had planned...But still, Piccolo starts the series biting off a hell of a lot more than he could chew in a pissing contest. And let'slook at his interaction with Gohan. he threatens to slit the kids throat, and to prove he has powers he throws him at the mountain. He thinks to himself that Gohan will either find the power or turned to jelly. And when he feeds Gohan, in the dub I remember him thinking something about looking out for Gohan (havent seen it UUE-style, so tell me if its different). In the original, its more like "goddamn brat, this is the last time I help you. If you cant live on your own after this, then your worthless to me anyway." And there's the part where he saves Gohan from the Saibaiman. In the dub he takes on a mentor-ish tone and tells him to stay focused, and that he was lucky he was there this time. In the original, he's more like "I wasnt saving you, I needed a warm up. Start looking after yourself." And let's not forget later when Gohan tries to help him up and Piccolo bitch slaps him.

This is not a guy who exhibits solid people skills.
I still disagree. When he saved Gohan from the Saibaman, I think he was full of shit. He was at a point where he wanted to protect Gohan but was in denial. We know just Hours later he gives his own life to save Gohan. I find it hard to believe that just hours prior he didn't give a rats ass about Gohan.

However, as for people skills. That's not really what I meant. Piccolo has this "you've gotta get a grip on you're own life and take care of yourself" feel. It's almost like, even though he's evil, he's someone to look up to on how to take care of yourself and how to be a man.

This isn't exactly on the Dragonball/FUNimation path that this topic is on, but the first One Piece/FUNimation episode just aired Saturday and I was trying to find which VA from theIr Dragonball dub voice which characters in the One Piece dub.

Do you think that the FUNI/One Piece dub will have any of the same problems that their Dragonball Z one has. being that FUNi took over after a different company left?

I hope this is what you were asking/saying:

Eric Vale (Sanji) - Trunks
Chris Sabat (Zoro) - Dragonball Z
Sonny Strait (Usopp) - Kuririn
Jeremy Inman (Masira) - No. 16

Haha, nice.

I've looked around Youtube a bit for some legit clips of the One Piece cast, but I only found one, and it sounds like Mr. Strait is just using his "Krillin" voice all over again...

I wouldn't say I'm disappointed, just kind've annoyed they'd be using voices so similar to the ones they used in Dragonball. I haven't seen ANY One Piece Anime, dub sub or otherwise, I've just read the first 3 volumes of Manga.

Agreed, I'm a big OP fan and I just watched the dub today, I thought it was passable, but certain things like Ussop/Krillin and Zoro/Piccolo really annoyed me.

I mean when Zoro yells he sounds exactly like Piccolo, which speaks volumes of Chris Sabat's ability (the man of 1000 voices that all sound the same), Sonny Strait on the other hand has a better vocal range, but seems to have just been lazy this time around.

Yes, thank you very much. I didn't think I would be seeing, or in this case hearing, anything this year with the new dub and kinda thought the would be starting everything from the beginning. I just happened to be watching the DBZ episode that I recorded and the was a new ending song for OP. So I watched the four OP episodes and the last one was the FUNi one. The strange thing is that on the TV guide thru my cable company doesn't list these as “new” episodes.

Neither does Cartoon Network acknowledge them as "new." Since there is no break inbetween 143 and 144, or something to warrant any prior promotion, they're basically like "lol wut" and make no distinction between the two.

He didn't use Nail's voice the way he did in the dub, but it seemed to me (and I'm sure there can be a few ways of interpreting the scene) that Nail "came through." Just like Dende seemed sense Nail's presence more clearly at some points. Like in that line, I dont remember the end part of the quote, but it seemed to imply that this fight was Round 2. Which is when Freeza started to freak out.

Actually, I just put the DVD on.

Piccolo: Haven't you realized it yet? We can see through your every move.

What do you mean "we?"

Piccolo: You've become a giant and you're using both hands, yet this is
the best you've got? (Oh, we're both wrong, his voice does change).

*Cue unneeded flashback on crap we just saw a few episodes ago.*

Piccolo (sort of): I have merged with Piccolo.

Freeza: What?

Dende: I... I knew it!

Piccolo (back to his own voice: By doing so, my power has increased several times over.

*ANOTHER GODDAMN FLASHBACK OF SHIT FROM A FEW EPS AGO I FUCKING HATE POINTLESS FILLER*

Piccolo: I have obtained the ultimate power.

So from we statements to a complete personality and vocal shift back to standard I statements and declarations of superiority, Nail basically popped up here and there before ultimately submerging completely within Piccolo's subconscious.

Oh, I wanted to touch on something you said earlier about Gohan's comment on Piccolo's ability to measure up an opponent. He certainly does get good at this, but he wasn't always. And Gohan was a 5 year old with a case of hero worship. The only person he's seen Piccolo fight besides himself was Nappa (ok, and he slaughtered a saibaiman).

I don't disagree with you on Piccolo's basic character. My point is that the original script supports him actually being full of shit, stuck between worlds and not fully sure how to adjust for awhile. As you said before, for the most part in the dub he makes a solid shift into "Uncle Piccolo" pretty early on. Being born in a normal body, he's an actual Namekian. So he comes equipped with a soul obviously, and thus the potential for personal growth. But he also has the memories and motivations of a long life spent as the incarnation of pure evil. Just because his mortal soul tempers his hatred for all living things doesn't mean he made this sudden shift and just woke up one day like "ok time to be nice now."

And on One Piece, I was in another room but it was on. I actually thought DBZ was on (I think it came on after), and it confused me that I didn't know what anyone was talking about or some of the voices. I'm not really a One Piece fan, so I haven't been folowwing, but another friend calls me up all "OMG OP FUNi-dub fuck Chris Sabat he ruins Zolo!" And then I hear "Krillin" again and I'm like "oh, so who's Sonny playing?"

EDIT: Like I said, I'm not really an OP fan. but I just watched some sub/dub comparisons on Youtube and... holy shit OP fans I'm sorry. Like, as much as I disapprove of the DBZ dubs changes, I fell like I cant even complain now. We got off easy. This one clip I saw, Luffy's had this huge open mouthed grin and they digitally painted his mouth shut. What? This is my damn problem with them. Censorship should be on a case by case basis, and done when you come across an issue that wouldnt pass the censors. And then, it is expected that when releasing to DVD, which isnt censored, these snips will be gone. With 4Kids, they are dead set on making it like they CREATED the show. An episode could be perfectly acceptable for US television broadcast and they'd still cut it to hell, digitally remove text, guck around with character's appearence, change food and drink items, etc. And then they only release THEIR version on DVD as if it is somehow superior. If they had done Dragon Ball, it would have been Dragon Power the series.
To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.

Actually, when I say the "Original" Piccolo, I mean the Manga. But I kind of thought that the line you mentioned about "fighting with 2 arms and being a giant" was in the Manga. But I just checked Volumes 25 & 26 and all of that stuff with the voice changes and remembering Nail's memories was filler. So Toriyama's Piccolo never actually had Nail come out like that and just rather had the real Piccolo have his memories. Sorry for the confusion, I should have double-checked the Manga before I spoke.

As for Gohan, maybe you're right. But also, maybe Goku could coud have told him a few stories. Even during the 23'rd Budokai Piccolo Jr. had a good feel for the other Humans power. Realiozing that they weren't quite as weak as he thought. I guess the line itsself made by Gohan was more or less Toriyama's feelings about Piccolo stated through Gohan.

I'm not disagreeing with you. To be honest I hate some of the Dub's line aswell for Piccolo in the UUE's. But regardless of which version you watch, regardless of if Piccolo is "Uncle Piccolo" in the Saiyan Saga or "Full of Shit Piccolo"...he still is gaining this protector feeling about Gohan from the start and becoming a mentor type towards Gohan.

Speaking of the manga, has anyone noticed those weird cases where the Jpanese lines are nothing like what's said in the manga, but the Funi lines are closer to the manga? I noticed that a lot during the Frieza saga. Example:

SSJ1 Goku (manga): It's over, FREEZA!!!!
SSJ1 Goku (Japanese anime): I am completely furious with you FREEZA!!!!
SSJ1 Goku (Funi dub): Now you will know the horror, FREEZA!!!!!!

Of those three, I like the manga line best. Short, angry, and to the point.
The other two seem too long.
Taking the time to say "completely furious" sounds like scolding a small dog. ^_^;
And "know the horror" sounds ooc to me. I mean it sounds more like something Vegeta would say, not Goku.

I remember that line in Budokai. The music made it awesome. Isn't it weird how he says it in Budokai, but not the dub?

But then again, the dub had to work around the lip movement, and Budokai was specifically made for U.S audiences (although it was later released in Japan).

So then, how come the script in the game was different from the dub?

It seemed like it was ripped from the manga in many places.

Geez, I loved that game. I'd still play its story mode if it weren't for Goku's Super Saiyan being totally worthless.
