Sabat is definitely partially to blame, it sounded like he wanted Clinkenbeard to be a Nadolny with a better range. At the same time, I won't pretend that the VA has no creative choice in the matter.NintendoBlaze53 wrote:You can't blame Colleen for emoting wrongly, that blame has to fall on the ADR director for making her act that way. VA's don't have creative choice most of the time. Colleen acts what the ADR director tells her to act. In Kai's case she was taking on a new role that was already played by past actors, in cases like that she would have just been told how to act by Sabat. Very few voice actors are fans of, or know anything about the shows they act in when they start playing a character in that show. Colleen would trust Sabat who's been working on DB for 10 years, as opposed to telling Sabat how she thinks Gohan should sound, even if she did say how she wanted to play Gohan, Sabat has the final say.Jinzoningen MULE wrote:Sabat is definitely partially to blame, it sounded like he wanted Clinkenbeard to be a Nadolny with a better range. Yeah, plus have Meredith McCoy rerecord Clinkenbeard's 18 lines & Brad Jackson as Oolong, since they're back for Super & it would hold up better. Plus, Oolong only had a few lines in the first 3 arcs, but you can definitely tell it's not Brad. It feels like they didn't even try with his replacement.SaiyamanMS wrote:Anyway, if we were to get a theoretical DBZ TV series redub, they could probably cut costs by reusing dialogue from Kai where possible. It'd cut the amount of material to be recorded by about half. A redub of the original DB would be good too, the existing dub for that series isn't too bad, but it could be so much better.
My exact problem with Colleen though is that, as I've stated before elsewhere, is that she has only 1 male voice & it's the one she uses for Luffy, just not voicing a simpleton in Gohan's case. I would much prefer a more tolerable voice actress for Gohan if Nadolny isn't available anymore. I DEFINITELY wouldn't like her as Goku. Keep Luffy's voice as far away as possible from Goku, if they wouldn't mind.
Only dubs that matter are DB, Kai, & Super. Nothing else.

Except when the VA suggests something for their performance. Sean's been making slight tweaks to the dubs since Kai & we've gotten some of his best lines & jokes from those suggestions. If it's a longrunning, or popular series, a VA will generally watch the sub to get a feel for the series & the characters, or read the manga, if there is one. Even though it didn't help his performance whatsoever because of the live action movie's fundamental misunderstanding of Dragon Ball as a whole, Justin Chatwin said that he read the manga for his research to play that version of Goku. VAs in Japan will probably also do the same for when they need to voice a character in an anime based on a manga if they're new.
MasakoX theorized that, because Nozawa's Black wasn't as great in the first several episodes of the Future Trunks Arc as it would get, it was partially because she didn't have a fundamental understanding of the character quite yet because there's no manga that Super's adapting so she couldn't read it or do some research beforehand. She only went off of what the director told her at the time. I assume she asked & they told her his true nature at some point, but that's probably all. Since the writers of the anime, & Toyotaro, go off of Toriyama's outlines for the arcs, it wouldn't be surprising if they did tell her after a few recording sessions to help her.
This also affected Sean's performance as Black in Xenoverse 2, since that arc hadn't gotten to the point of revealing Black's origins at the time they recorded, or at least they didn't watch the sub beforehand to grasp how Nozawa played him, they went under the assumption that his SS4 Goku voice would work just fine, when it didn't. I expect Sean & Sabat will pay closer attention to Black's voice when they dub that arc. He doesn't need to exactly copy Nozawa, he just needs to know Black's personality traits & how he should talk for it like he does for Goku. Then again, the voice direction is just kinda all over the place when it comes to that game, so who knows.

Yes, that's the one, and I believe it was successful. The cost of re-dubbing two 45 minute specials would be much less, I'm guessing, and I like to think that we could get it properly funded.Nejishiki wrote:Yes, FUNimation was gauging interest for an updated English dub of The Vision of Escaflowne's director's cut.IAmTheMilkMan wrote:Haven't they done gofundme/kickstarter-like campaigns for dubs in the past? Re: "Dragon Ball Z Kai: The Final Chapters" FUNimation English Dub Official Announcement and Discussion Thread
I said MOST of the time. Sean and Nozawa had been playing acting in Dragon Ball a long time before they started making changes to how they played their character. Colleen was new to Dragon Ball and I'm pretty sure hadn't worked on a dub with Sabat as ADR director before Kai. To Sean and Nozawa, Goku is very important to them as a role. To Colleen, I'm sure she feels the same about Luffy and Erza, but I doubt she feels the same about Gohan.Scsigs wrote:NintendoBlaze53 wrote:VA's don't have creative choice most of the time. Kyle Hebert rocked it as Gohan in this episode. I also noticed that Sabat changed his Karin voice. It's less of a Harvey Fierstein impersonation now.

I think Chris Sabat forgot his Karin voice. I didn't really like the old voice, but why change it now? Might as well be consistent.
Other than that, it was a pretty good episode.

Overall, it was really good. I didn't mention this before, but I was hoping Eric Vale wasn't going to scream all of his lines as the tournament announcer. His first episode back as that character had me a bit worried that he hadn't gotten the proper direction, but thankfully the second really showed they had a handle on it.

This is pretty much how Karin sounded back at the beginning of Kai too. It's jarring compared to every other time Chris played him, but not so much on its own. Personally my only issue is that he sounds too much like Vegeta now.Footlong Shoe wrote:I think Chris Sabat forgot his Karin voice. I didn't really like the old voice, but why change it now? I was hoping that trailer would show at least a little tease of the Super Saiyan 3 transformation scene. Still looks like it'll continue to be a quality dub.

Sean teased it a while ago! He said he did something that burned him out but fans will appreciate, someone replied with SS3 for Buu Kai and he liked it.Footlong Shoe wrote:I was hoping that trailer would show at least a little tease of the Super Saiyan 3 transformation scene. There are a lot of things to anticipate in this dub, another being Vegeta's sacrifice, or well anything with Vegeta actually since Sabat was that bad in old Z dub.

6 weeks until we get to see that iconic Super Saiyan 3 transformation.
I know Sean has knocked this out of the park, he has - for me anyhow - perfected the role of Goku over the past few years.
The number one Goku for me, and definitive version outside of Japan (my opinion).
