I would actually welcome a replacement score, just to make the show more consistent because of the Yamamoto-Kikuchi mess.Blade wrote:It's unlikely that'd they'd go back and use that score again, which was scraped together due to simply being what they had to hand at the time.Flame Dragon wrote:Will this have a replacement score? I'm just afraid of it sounding horrible. Hopefully if they do it, they do it good (and not loud and noisy ala Faulconer).
Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming.
Honestly Z didn't work well with Megaman music either. A replacement score would make this dub a bit more interesting as long as it's not that soulless trash. Personally I'd love them to hire Shuki Levy to score it although that's unlikely.Flame Dragon wrote:Will this have a replacement score? If so... why? Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming.
Question.....
Did the Westwood dub air at the same time as the FUNimation dub? The conspiracy theorist in me is beginning to wonder if perhaps the reason the Ocean dub of Kai hasn't come out yet is because there's some sort of clause in their contract that states they can't air their dub until FUNimation already has, since their version is the one getting released to home video, and Toei wouldn't want home video sales to be affected by fans watching a dub that's farther along than the FUNimation dub is.
To be clear, I don't think this is the case. But I've basically become to the Ocean dub of Kai what CNN is to news--considering all the possible conspiracy theories to compensate for the fact that not much has occurred in the way of real news.

A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

It aired at the same time as the Funimation dub, and actually completed its run in the UK before the Funimation dub ran its course in America.TheBlackPaladin wrote:Question.....

We also got the Blue Water GT dub long before the Funimation dub aired.

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming.
I've stated this a few times on this thread and been ignored. I think this would be the case since it should have otherwise come out. Probably has to do with copyright and licence issues. I think, it could be possible for when FUNi stops selling Kai up in Canada, we could see the Ocean version hit the stores instead. FUNi has rights to all of North America, and there is probably something in that contract that is keeping this from getting out on TV or in store shelves. Either that, or FUNi will licence this for distribution in Canada but can't at the moment due to contractual issues.TheBlackPaladin wrote:Question.....

All in all, it probably has to do with legalities and contract obligations. It's probably as big of a mess legally as it was with Bret Hart in 1997

I'd love to hear Kai with Mega Man music... if it was from the Mega Man *games* as opposed to the Ruby-Spears cartoon, that is.90sDBZ wrote:Honestly Z didn't work well with Megaman music either. I know, the whole idea seems strange. Back in the day there was the whole "Canadian Content" thing, but I don't think there's any rhyme or reason to do a completely different English dub of the series, especially after the Funi dub has already aired in the UK.JackyBoi99 wrote:I have a feeling that this isn't happening![]()

It always seemed strange that 'ocean' was going to dub kai. If this is really going to happen, then they better get their shit together.

It depends on what you mean by "isn't happening." If you mean that actors weren't brought in to do any dubbing, then....I mean, I have no way of guaranteeing that that's not true, but it would mean a lot of people have lied, including multiple voice actors.JackyBoi99 wrote:I have a feeling that this isn't happening![]()

If you mean that work on this dub was done but that it isn't going to air....well, that might be the case. It is taking an oddly long time. Even though I'm sure they probably wouldn't say anything, I'm surprised no one has tried to contact IPProductions, since we now know that's officially the name of the company that is (or at least was) producing this dub. Giving it the nickname, "the Ocean dub of Kai" is not strictly unwarranted, since they are recording at Ocean Sound, but IPProductions are the ones in charge of this dub.

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming.
Dobson has a lot of anime under IPProductions/Ocean Sound though. For example he has Death Note listed as being produced by IPProductions/Ocean Sound but in the credits it says produced by VIZ Media in association with Ocean Productions. I got the impression that Dobson just listed the general production company which would be Ocean Productions but not the company that actually commissioned the dub. Also Google gives companies in the UK and Luxembourg but that can't be right since it would need to be based in Vancouver or at least someplace in Canada.TheBlackPaladin wrote:If you mean that work on this dub was done but that it isn't going to air....well, that might be the case. Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming.
Crazy thought but what if the Ocean dub is coming out in stead of or along side FUNI's dub.
Maybe this is why FUNI haven't said anything and why Toei mentioned europe only on their website in regards to "The final chapters".
I dunno if this post has any credibility but it's something I thought might be interesting.

Just asked Brian Drummond on Twitter if he's got any updates on this version of Kai and asked if he knew when it will air, and was replied back to with this:
Doesn't seem like we'll ever see it.

I wouldn't say never. I mean, why would they go through all the trouble of recording all that and do do nothing about it? It'd be a huge waste of money.

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming.
Alternatively, as opposed to representing an affirmation that he's done the job, Drummond may have been saying he knows nothing about the dub - I.E, he hasn't recorded his lines for it.
The whole issue around this production continues to confound and defy logical explanation. With no apparent broadcast market or home release on the cards, if this production exists or ever went into production to begin with, one has to wonder who put forth the money to produce it, and why they seem to be satisfied to not take any steps towards some sort of remuneration or are unable to do so.
At the end of the day, if they got voice actors in the booth to tape lines, there has to have been a license agreed with Toei at some point. The only guess I can make is that the license was acquired prospectively before any broadcast agreement with a network could be sealed, with the assumption that a deal could be done. It's possible that the dub was produced with the UK market in mind, as the Westwood Dub was, but that the UK broadcasters chose to pass on the show, or Funimation were able to get there first.
It may well be that the people behind this production made a gamble and lost - big time.

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming.
The amount of time that has passed with nothing happening is concerning, but not necessarily a confirmation that nothing's happening. After all, many countries who had dubs of DB, DBZ, and DBGT still haven't had a dub of Kai produced yet, and the Russian dub of DBZ only began a few years ago. This is also why producers don't like it when NDAs are violated...if nobody had said anything about this dub, none of us would be losing interest in the Ocean Kai dub or fearing about it not happening, because we wouldn't know about it.
However, the big thing I'm waiting for is to hear if Kai ends up on Canadian TV. To this day, Kai has not aired in any way on Canadian TV. If the FUNimation dub airs on Canadian TV, then I will consider that the final nail in the coffin, and label this dub as something that was probably recorded, but also something that we will never see.
