DB has no official canon, but I think most people are going to still say that this movie won't be canon since AT didn't write the film. I'm pretty sure he likely design the characters like he did with most DBZ movies.

I hope they don't make Vegeta useless. He is pretty much #5 on the strongest characters on earth next to Fat Buu, Gohan, Goku and Gotenks. I also hope that Goku does not kill off the main villains with a Genki Dama .

I don't think this is even a possibility given his popularity and usual role in the story. I also don't want another Genki Dama ending unless it is done really well.

We know he's been involved earlier and more heavily than ever before, designed the characters AND came up with the plot of the movie (even if he's not ironing out the specifics by writing the full script). From the sounds of things, he's basically done everything he used to do for the manga, except pawn the actual drawing and dialogue off on someone else. =P

I wish they would make this movie in Toriyama's art style done today. They made the whole series copying his newest art styles, why not with this one?

I totally forgot about that for a moment. It seem all of the recent DB media like Episode of Bardock and the 2008 Jump Special feel like that they tie into the manga perfectly in my opinion expect for Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans '010 which can't obviously not fit into neither the anime or manga.

I think he was useful in 6 and 7 but you're right. I forgot that even though he had a role in the other movies and fought he was still useless.

Do I think it's supposed to be canon? I would say so (assuming no outrageous plotholes once the film is released). The press release does say: "A new story in the official history of Dragon Ball is born, neither a spin-off nor a side-story, one that can be enjoyed by both children and parents, manga fans and anime fans." If they wanted to prove that the movie would just fit within the series' continuity, like 9 or 13 for example, then they accomplished that when they announced what chapters it was going to take place between (excusing a couple of Uub pages that were at the end of 517), but they seems to be trying to really emphasize it's importance a little too much for it not to be...IMO, of course.

DB does not have a official canon, but stuff like Movie 12 would be impossible to be canon since it can't fit into anything. Other popular franchises like the Alien/Predator franchise has no official canon, but you can't say the comics are canon given how stuff in the comics can't tie in into the films. For example, The Space Jockeys have two totally different origins in both the comics and films.

DB doesn't have an officially defined canon because no one involved with the franchise has, well, defined it. But with their statement here, it seems like they are starting one that includes the manga volumes 1-42 and Battle of Gods at the very least.

I hardly think so. It appears Toei realized that it matters for the public whenever the original author is involved or not. Series such as One Piece, Naruto and Bleach all have done that, with even an extra manga chapters by the author that links to the movie.

Yes, I would say this is supposed to be cannon, or that's how they want it to be at least, insisting that it is "an official story" - "not a side story" - "that takes place between manga chapters [blabla] and [blabla]".

But whether it will end up being possibly cannon to fans will most likely depend on if there are any incoherence or if every single element is in phase with the information from the manga or anime, without the slightest doubt.
Then, there is "manga cannon" and "anime cannon", and in the end, every fan has their own vision of what should be cannon or not anyway.

But I think the presence or lack of incohenrence will play a major role in fans accepting it as cannon to anything or not cannon at all, regardless of what Toei says.
As far as Toei's concerned, they clearly want it to be considered cannon even manga-wise, basically trying to tell us "whatever version is the true version for you - even if it's the manga - this story happened in it". Now it's all up to make us feel that it could be true and not contradict most fans' beliefs.
