I think he's a talented composer, and I love a lot of the stuff he has done, but I'm not really all too taken with what I've heard of his take on Dragonball thus far. I feel like the direction that he has chosen, or been directed to take, for the franchise, hasn't really gelled with the material or brought it to life.
I suppose the best way I'd describe his score for Battle of Gods and Kai would be '
inoffensive' if anything, but I think that good underscore needs to be more than just background musaq sometimes, it has to add something to the visuals without detracting from it, and I feel that he hasn't really found that balance often enough for my liking.
I mean, a lot of the criticism he has gotten has been from people who simply want something stylistically similar to what the previous composers have done before, especially in Kai, but I'm all for covering entirely new ground - it's just that his contributions haven't done anything for me.
