The major growth Goku went through was accepting his Saiyan heritage.
I also like the idea of Goku going through more character development. It would really add more unique and dynamic character interactions between him and rest of the cast and would hopefully spice up the plot a little.

Sooo I was browsing IMDb for release dates and came across this review, I thought it was pretty hilarious especially considering all the OTT hate this movie got, nice contrast :
The very bad English makes it sound legit, but then he doesn't mention a single detail about the actual film so who knows, still made me laugh, and thought it was worth sharing to counter the negativism on here.

Goku isn't going to change or develop in any appreciable way because he's too valuable as a marketing and nostalgic device. At best, he'll gain a new character flaw in time for a quick plot to resolve it and bump him back up to the standard, at worst, he'll keep learning the same lesson over and over again.

That review must have been written by Whis, who used his time powers to watch the movie 30 times in one day...

Man, I think what I hate more about SSGSS than its design is its seemingly lack of weaknesses. Pre-mastered SSJ and SSJ2 altered their personalities and wasted energy. SSJ3 had a rapid ki and stamina drain. SSJ4, presumably, may not work without a tail. SSJG had a very short time limit.

SSGSS is too perfect. It's also mastered, considering Goku is able to perfectly control his ki while in it to the point that Sorbet's beam penetrates his body.
"Dragon Ball once became a thing of the past to me, but after that, I got angry about the live action movie, re-wrote an entire movie script, and now I'm complaining about the quality of the new TV anime. It seems Dragon Ball has grown on me so much that I can't leave it alone." - Akira Toriyama on Dragon Ball Super

That is part of what I like about it so much. He's a god, amd a super god at that, so it is nice that it is so powerful and ineffable. It also reminds me of his FPSSJ from the Cell Games, so calm and fluid but very powerful, and that was a great form to me. SSGSS is my favorite SSJ form now.

That's because that's what it is. Using god ki.

I love how this thread seems to have become nothing more than cyclical negativity, always looking for new problems where none really exist, new things to complain about, or just generally be negative.

We even got news a few days back and everyone seemed to brush it off for the sake of arguing about a ring. lol

The difference is that the "negativity" is mostly based on legitimate criticisms of some points of the movie.

The praising in that review is just fanboying.

No Goten and Trunks, really? Opportunity to have Freeza confusing teen Goten and teen Trunks for the 2 Guys who beat him, utterly wasted

Also it was crap.

Goten and Kid Trunks were probably one of the worst characters he made, annoying, awful in the field, only rely on Fusion. I am glad he is finally seeing that and shoved them aside. Hopefully the same happens in Super, doubt it though.

There are plenty of legitimate criticisms. This film is far from perfect.

Even the greatest films of all times have flaws. You shouldn't throw around empty statements like that.

I think he was just joking. Personally from what I've seen and heard I prefer BoG but this movie is also pretty good.

Well, that little teaser from FUNi has definitely reinvigorated my excitement for this film. Actually watched it a few times now. Brings back memories of some of their trailers for the latter DBZ films. It also reminds me of the fact that I haven't actually seen the movie yet, despite knowing everything about it for a good couple of months now. Really looking forward to seeing this one in theatres. The BOG screenings last year were such a treat. Seeing people recount their experiences was nearly as fun as watching the movie itself. Everyone seemed to have a great time, regardless of what type of fan they are.

Crossing my fingers and hoping that the reception for the film in August is a little less...hysterical than when spoilers started filtering out of Japan back in April. To be honest, it did have quite a negative impact on my excitement for this movie and, overall, it will sour my memories of this a little bit. It also ended up having to compete with the announcement of Dragon Ball Super... Hopefully these memories will be overwritten in the not-to-distant future. :D The movie theatre surroundings tend to invoke a far more positive response anyway; not that I have an issue with people criticising the film. It was more to do with the way that criticisms were being presented and the nature of the posts that contained them. The content can be as negative as you want, but I feel like the intention should always be positive (y'know, creating in-depth discussion and all that). There also seemed to be a huge amount of emphasis on strength discussion and in-universe debates. To an extent, these are valid points of discussion, but it got to the point where it was consuming 10-20 pages at a time and it ended up becoming the focal of point of this thread.

All in all, I just hope everyone has fun with this. It's weird to say that in 2015, new DB films are coming to theatres.

Freeza flipping his shit when not-Goku and not-Future Trunks merge into one Super Saiyan would've been hilarious and better than what we got.
