Most memorable BS dub lines / names
Re: Most memorable BS dub lines / names
When I see people take objection to the FUNimation dialogue, I like to point out several lines in the Kai version that are likewise incongruent with the source material.
"It's about time I put my foot down." Oh no, Frieza made a funny; he's not supposed to do that. Better yet, this is more or less the successor to "Sometimes you just have to put your foot down when it comes to kids."
"I hope you're not afraid of heights!" He made another funny! Egad. I thought he was supposed to be austere about murdering people in order to underline the severity of the scene.
"You're in for it now. My second form makes the one you're familiar with look as gentle as a sleeping kitten!" He references Earth creatures! That's not right, he's an alien!

Re: Most memorable BS dub lines / names
So I'm watching the early Cell saga now, just got up to the point where Trunks explains the Androids to Goku and leaves.
- Huge error: Bulma says she knew Goku since he was only 5 years old. This is wrong, Goku was 12 years old when she first met him in Dragonball. Where did FUNImation get the "Goku is 5" from if that wasn't in the original dialogue? I hate factual errors like this.
-T hey also have that infamous "pink shirt" dialogue with FUNI adding lines. In the original Trunks and Vegeta don't say much to each other, in the dub Vegeta tells him if he likes the pink shirt so much he can have it. Was this supposed to be a gay joke?
- Freeza and King Cold have a lot of added dialogue when their faces are away from the camera. I don't personally mind the "extra dialogue" but I can see why others would be bothered by it. I also forgot FUNI subtly altered Freeza's voice a bit in his mecha form, I completely forgot about that.
Also its odd watching these episodes because Vegeta's voice sounds like his Ocean dub impression. Chris Sabat re-did his voice up to the end of the Garlic Jr. saga, so now Vegeta sounds "off." Vegeta almost sounds British in these episodes...weird.
His Piccolo is a bit different too, but improved from the Freeza saga.

That's a DROP in the bucket compared to the number of instances in the Z dub and those lines aren't nearly as god awful as "you dirty crook, you stole your mother's pocket book!" For every arguably bad line in Kai there are at least 10 equally bad or FAR worse lines in the Z dub.Lord Exor wrote:When I see people take objection to the FUNimation dialogue, I like to point out several lines in the Kai version that are likewise incongruent with the source material. <br abp="731"><br abp="732">"It's about time I put my foot down." "Hello, anybody home?"
"Yes, I'm here. Hello, friend."
"Thank you very much. I'm a visitor touring your lovely planet and I happened to come across seven dragon balls. A man at a gift shop told me about the legend behind the balls--you know, the wish--but you need a password to activate them. Would you happen to know the password, my good man?"

"You never meant to fight, you're trying to buy some time aren't you? Transaction cancelled! You can't outsmart me, I'll be long gone before this planet blows up, and you--you will be dead!"
"Well, aren't ya gonna keep running, monkey? Aren't ya? Heh heh heh! Like a little circus chimp! Come one! Come all! See the spectacular chimp in a maze! Where will he run today? You don't have enough time to get back to your spaceship and Vegeta destroyed mine. But please, just for my sake, don't stop running--it's far too entertaining!"
"Don't be so glum guys, you haven't lost your king for good. Wherever he is, you're about to join him!"
"Don't worry, it won't hurt too bad. Really--death is my specialty."

Exor, there are occasionally good lines, and dub fans bring them up all the time, but they are the exception, not the rule.

What's the chamber of commerce supposed to refer to anyway? It doesn't look like the Nameks use any form of currency on their planet.

They're clearly being passive-aggressive, it isn't that difficult to discern that they aren't being literal.

Re: Most memorable BS dub lines / names
That's not the issue, it's the issue that an agrarian society with no real government would have a Chamber of Commerce. I get it, it's fantasy and the fact that every alien speaks the same language requires suspension of disbelief, but that line goes a step too far. It's made even worse when the delivery is corny.Lord Exor wrote:They're clearly being passive-aggressive, it isn't that difficult to discern that they aren't being literal.

"You wanna dance, or fight?"
In reference to Burter and Jeice's antics. It isn't the line itself that's particularly remarkable, but rather the fact that Goku uses this same line two episodes in a row. First in Episode 67 just before the fight, then again towards the end of the fight in Episode 68. Guess he was running out of comebacks.

Re: Most memorable BS dub lines / names
Kai does have it's share of weirdly applied wit to some scenes that I cringe at a bit at too. If not for Chris Ayres consistently good delivery I'd be rolling over from the strain of some of the more notoriously wordy lines they gave Freeza.Lord Exor wrote:When I see people take objection to the FUNimation dialogue, I like to point out several lines in the Kai version that are likewise incongruent with the source material.

"I advise you not to put so much stock in our escape, but if you'd like I can bring you closer to him."
Lines like those where they seem to exaggerate how much of a "mwuhahahah" villain he was rather than just a well spoken leader.
The "If you think that your little friends can escape me, you're sadly mistaken.." in the old dub conveyed the suspense of that scene just fine.
Even for that line debuting his second form:"In this form I won't be as gentle/nice as before." Again, was enough even in the old dub.
Even too much thesaurus speak for me can ruin lines that don't flow well with projection of them.
Zephyr wrote:The fandom's collective fetishizing of "moments" is also ridiculous to me. No, not everyone needs a fucking "shine" moment. If that's all you want, then all you want is fanservice, rather than an actual coherent story. And of course those aren't mutually exclusive; you could have a coherent story with "shine" moments! But if a story is perfectly coherent (and I'm really not seeing any compelling arguments that this one is anything but, despite constantly recurring, really poorly reasoned, attempts to argue otherwise), and you're bemoaning the lack of "shine" moments as a reason for the story's poor quality, then you're letting your thirst for "shine" moments obfuscate your ability to detect basic storytelling when it's right in front of you.

Dragon Ball isn't Shakespeare either way. All versions have their merits and demerits when analyzed thoroughly.

No one is claiming it is, but it sure as hell isn't bad as that dub. Is everything that "isn't Shakespeare" mean that adaptations get to change the scripts dramatically and "punch up the comedy?"Lord Exor wrote:Dragon Ball isn't Shakespeare either way. Kuririn- Man, that android is toast!
Piccolo- Yeah...more like burnt toast!
And I know many people's favorite "Yes, yes, yes, YES! I can do this, I feel great! I'm alive, I'm awake, I'm wide awake!"
I've never understood this "But Kai can be overly wordy" retort. Why does that really matter if the actor deliver's it well? Even a good line can be ruined by bad acting. The first line you wrote isn't about mwahahaha, it's just pretentiously wordy, which works for Freeza. It's similar to Boyd Crowder in Justified. He's the kind of guy that will use 40 words when 4 will do. It's a nice bit of characterization above the simple act of suspense. Ayres made even the wordiest lines work."I advise you not to put so much stock in our escape, but if you'd like I can bring you closer to him."

Re: Most memorable BS dub lines / names
First thing that comes to mind in terms of names at least is Funi apparently changing Shen to Hero because of Master Shen or something. Idk I haven't watch the original Dragon Ball yet
Re: Most memorable BS dub lines / names
The dub dialogue removed a lot of important detail when Trunks showed up.
For example in the original Trunks reveals he's 17, in the dub he never mentions his age. Likewise in the original Vegeta says all Saiyans have black hair and since Trunks didn't he couldn't be a Saiyan. In the dub Vegeta doesn't say anything about hair color, just that he can't be a Saiyan since he/Gohan/Goku were the only Saiyans left.
I don't understand why FUNI didn't translate these facts and just ignored them.

He doesn't deliver it well; his meter is erratic and unnatural as a result of having to match his grandiloquence to pre-animated mouth flapping. And no, he isn't culpable for it as an actor. The scriptwriters are to blame here for placing Ayres in this predicament with their excessively ornate lines.ABED wrote:No one is claiming it is, but it sure as hell isn't bad as that dub. Re: Most memorable BS dub lines / names
He does, the delivery isn't super realistic, it's more stylized or theatrical, but it works. I buy it, certainly more than Young's "listen to me sound evil". Yes, the dialog is over the top, but I don't see how the pompous speech is worse to you than Young's hammy, childish, vaguely sexual, weird delivery from what appears to be a very green actress. He doesn't deliver it well; his meter is erratic and unnatural as a result of having to match his grandiloquence to pre-animated mouth flapping. Yes, even fantastic actors can falter and deliver awkward speeches while dubbing anime--David Kaye comes to mind for his stint as Megatron in the so-called Unicron Trilogy. As far as FUNimation's cast is concerned, I would rank Dameon Clarke ahead of Ayres in his capacity to perform natural, flowing sentences in spite of the limitations imposed by the animation.
Watch it now! FUNi changed Tsurusennin to Master Shen which then screws with the ability to call Kami's disguise Shen and thus ruin the whole Shen as in Shen Long thing.First thing that comes to mind in terms of names at least is Funi apparently changing Shen to Hero because of Master Shen or something.
