As someone who just watched the dub of this, was Bulma the same VA as the one who has been around since the beginning of the FUNI dub back in the Namek saga? I seem to recall Bulma's voice being different in the Battle of Gods dub, but was this the original Bulma?

No, actually. This is Monica Rial, who has been voicing Bulma since 2008. Although, she didn't start officially voicing Bulma until Dragon Ball Z Kai started airing. The voice actress you're most likely talking about is Tiffany Vollmer, who retired from voice acting in 2008.
Personally, I think Monica Rial is the better Bulma. I'm curious to what you think!

I tend not to post here anymore because what I say doesn't add to the conversation.

I'm surprised, the new Bulma sounds almost identical to the previous one just with a better performance. Thought it was the same person

People complain about Tiffany's performance as being like a "valley girl", but is Bulma, the spoiled rotten heiress to the richest corporation on the planet, who originally started the hunt for the Dragon Balls just to wish for a boyfriend, who's first instinct towards getting Goku's Dragon Ball was by bribing him with her ass, is THAT Bulma NOT a valley girl?
Tiffany is still my favorite. The Japanese actress has an ear-splittingly annoying voice (it also couldn't be more cliche for a Japanese female) and although Monica gets the job done (she was excellent in Resurrection) she doesn't bring as much energy to the role as Tiffany.

Re: Official On-Going DBZ 2015 Movie Thread: "Resurrection '
Probably should've mentioned this earlier, but my theatre actually added another three sessions for this week. There was one on Thursday night and another couple this weekend. Great to see it do so well, especially compared to the two showings we haf last year. Probably better that they've been underestimating its performance, rather than overestimating it, too. Looks a lot better that way.
Still haven't written much about the film, since I lost the review I'd been writing last week. Maybe I'll come up with something more detailed at a later date (yeah, I know I said that with BOG, too). I will say that I enjoyed both the experience and the movie a bit more than I did with BOG last year. I think a lot of this was down to the venue; they actually screened the movie in Dolby Atmos, so it was incredibly loud. In fact, there were times when it almost too loud. Shenlong's voice was absolutely booming, as was the title card. I sat next to an old lady who seemed to gasp every time someone took a hit. Actually got a bit worried that she'd have a heart attack, haha. I guess there were a lot of punches to the gut in this movie.
Of course, the crowd was top-notch, but I sense it may have gotten a bit annoying for those who were seeing the movie for the first time. I actually went to another screening in a smaller theatre a couple of days prior, so it was fine for me. There was a lot of cheering, mostly from a particular group of people behind me. It became a bit much when Vegeta got his time to shine, but that made the conclusion to the film all the more hilarious.
This, for me, was pretty much the definition of a DBZ popcorn flick. It was a real crowd-pleaser, and I think it was a lot more balanced than BOG was, for the most part. The humour was prominent, but it was rarely intrusive and I think that, overall, the movie catered really well to all types of fans. The audience obviously had a great time with it, so that ended up having a huge influence on how I viewed the movie. Definitely liked it more the second time with the bigger crowd and the better sound, anyway. I'll be interested to see how it holds up for me on the home release, but at the moment it currently stands above the other 18.
Just briefly, I will drop a few comments on the movie itself (I've already written more than I intended to):
- As you all know, there were a lot of strength and battle power debates in the lead up to this film's release. While I don't care for any of this, surprisingly there were a couple of moments that actually irked me. When Freeza made his "1.5 million" estimation, I did cringe a little. Mostly because I wished they'd keep numbers out of the series, even if it is a series trademark. The other time was when Piccolo was struggling with Shisami- mostly because I'm biased towards Piccolo.
- I think they tried to fit way too much into the prologue. The opening scene with Sorbet and Pilaf's gang did a lot of jumping around, like they wanted to get it out of the way before the title card.
- When Freeza knocks out Gohan- freakin' awesome. It was great to see Freeza be so intimidating after such a long time. I think his frequent reappearances in both Anime-only material and video games really took a lot away from this movie. But the music really made this scene; so, so good.
- Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan Goku vs. Golden Freeza was not very impressive. There was nothing in here that said to me, "these two are on a whole new level." Even Bulma was keeping up with it just fine.
Regular Goku vs. Freeza? One of the highlights of the film. It did a much better job of conveying their power and there was a speed and an intensity to it that was missing from the second half of their fight. The aggression and rage on Freeza's face really gave it a degree of significance, like this is what we'd been waiting the whole movie for. SSGSS Goku vs. Golden Freeza was slow, stop-start and it lacked any sort of impact. There needed to be an equivalent to the 'Hero' scene from BOG in here.
- The ending did bother me, not because Goku took Vegeta's kill, but because of how quickly it all happened. It felt wasteful. Although, people in my theatre were actually surprised and confused when the Earth blew up, so I guess the "twist" did have its intended effect after all. There was a guy in front of me who had his arms out-stretched in confusion when that all played out.
- Oh, and 3-D? What 3-D? It added a little depth in parts, but it really wasn't anything spectacular.
- In the first showing I went to, the 'Engrish' version of 'Vow of Z' was flat-out laughed at. The lyrics on the side made it even more cringe-worthy. I mean, I appreciate the effort, but...maybe an instrumental is preferable next time.
- Jaco was the greatest character in this film. Nothing more needs to be said...
...except that there needs to be a third movie. I absolutely love the year-long cycle that these bring with them, from the initial teaser, to the first spread in V-Jump, to finally seeing it in theatres. These things are an event that the whole fandom can enjoy, and I really hope we keep seeing new movies in future. Who knows? The next one might even be the first 'Dragon Ball Super' movie!

Uh, have you heard Tiffany Vollmer? She was awful. She was very shrilly and didn't fit Bulma and she never really changed her voice for different emotions. Monica Rial is a vast improvement over Vollmer. Rial can do a different range of emotions that Vollmer couldn't. Vollmer could only sound like a shrilly bitch as Bulma, especially in the Z portion. Rial can at least do different emotions. I'm not being mean, but you should honestly go back and listen to Vollmer to hear how awful she is.nickzambuto wrote: Tiffany is still my favorite. Volmer sounds much to me and that's after recently watching Kai which had Rial in it.
Re: Official On-Going DBZ 2015 Movie Thread: "Resurrection '
It's a matter of opinion. I honestly like both but I'm leaning towards Vollmer slightly because of nostalgia but Rials voice has really grown on me since Kai and really like it now too.ShadowDude112 wrote:Uh, have you heard Tiffany Vollmer? Is Jaco's name a pun on anything?
When someone tells you, "Don't present your opinion as fact," what they're actually saying is, "Don't present your opinion with any conviction. Because I don't like your opinion, and I want to be able to dismiss it as easily as possible." Don't fall for it.

Well, Empire Basildon is a 10 minute walk from my house. That area is my usual "going out" place (there's gyms, restaurants, bowling, used to be nightclubs, etc.), so I think it'll be rude of me NOT to go!
