The reason the colors are similar is because they used the same film for the Blu-ray remasters that they'd been using since they started dubbing the show years ago.Pieter wrote:A strange request from me:
Can anyone upload a screenshot from the Edited 1-53 Ocean Dub, preferebly a screenshot from a scene that we can compare with one of the Blu-ray screens?
I really like the colour correction on the Blu-Rays and they seem close to the original. I could swear I've seen Dbz before in these colours (specifically the blue sky), and if my memory serves me well it was ten years ago on Cartoon Network, and the clips I later watched of the 1-53 Ocean dub. If I'm right it makes me wonder which source material was used for this dub? Or was it simply very contrasted?

Comparing between the old UUE footage and the new Blu-Ray footage, the Blu-Rays to me seem much lighter in comparison to the UE footage, which was the same type of footage used when Funimation first began dubbing DBZ.
I've taken screenshots between the individual releases over the years in a DBZ photo folder I have you can check here: http://www.majhost.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=256904
They're out of order, so they're labeled in this order:
1. Original/Ultimate Uncut
2. Dragon Box
3. Blu-Ray
4. Kai
5. Orange Brick

Thank you both
I was always annoyed by the Dragon Box colours looking way off. It felt like watching the series through dirty glasses. The old series I watched on TV (the 1-53 Ocean Dub) seemed to have better colours (I don't know if the same can be said about the Funimation dub thereafter). I didn't know why, but now I realize it was because the film source had aged. It makes me wonder what the film source was for the earlier episodes.
Did they use different film source for the Dragon Box series then?Metalwario64 wrote: The reason the colors are similar is because they used the same film for the Blu-ray remasters that they'd been using since they started dubbing the show years ago.

The DBox series was Toei's remaster from the early 2000s, and they used the original film masters, unlike FUNi's masters, which are multi-generational duplicates.Pieter wrote:Did they use different film source for the Dragon Box series then?
Actually, if memory serves, FUNi didn't actually use any film until 2006, when they aquired the reels for their orange brick remaster. Before then, all footage was sourced from digi-betas.Metalwario64 wrote:The reason the colors are similar is because they used the same film for the Blu-ray remasters that they'd been using since they started dubbing the show years ago.

All releases postponed starting with Level 2.1. It seems to be a matter of them starting the line too soon with too little finished. Money could also be an issue, considering the large size of the project and the small size of FUNimation.

Fuck. Now I hope 1.1 and 1.2 don't get rare. Even more so, I hope they eventually go past 2.1.JulieYBM wrote:All releases postponed starting with Level 2.1. Damn it, a new remaster process? This one better not be worse than the one used for 1.1 and 1.2, if so, I will be really pissed.

Wait what! Why would they want a new remastering process, When the one they're using is fine?
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

Re: FUNimation DBZ TV Blu-ray Official On-Going Thread
So, is there a chance this could lead to the (limited) Dragon Boxes being the only 4x3 complete release of the series for the foreseeable future once again, and the cropped widescreen sets been the standard once again?
If they do resume these releases, I'm betting from how the statement was worded that they'll probably use a bit more noise reduction, and leave the damage still on the film. Looks like a frame-by-frame remaster is too expensive for them to continue doing so, especially for their beat up generational master copies.

I assume to time consuming or expensive. I sure hope there new process doesn't cause deterioration in quality.samuraix123 wrote:Wait what! Why would they want a new remastering process, When the one they're using is fine?

I feel good about not getting the BD releases now. It's Ultimate Uncut Edition all over again. Need to find Dragon Box 4!

According to an announcement at RightStuf!
Blu-ray editions of Dragon Ball Z went into production based on fan demand, however due to the technical challenges of restoring from the original film frame by frame, FUNimation can no longer produce these releases. The company plans to reevaluate the current process and is researching more efficient methods of restoration.

Great! Here comes that freaking machine they ran the season sets through.

Oh God, they do have 1080p masters for those. I hope those aren't what we get.samuraix123 wrote:Great! Here comes that freaking machine they ran the season sets through.

My reaction was the same as Mike's on Twitter:
"Whhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaat."
I am glad I didn't even bother with the Blu-ray releases but I feel bad for people who began to invest into them. Why didn't they think through their plan first before beginning this release to see if they could complete the series?

Re: FUNimation DBZ TV Blu-ray Official On-Going Thread
If they are indeed shelved for the moment, now would be the best time to buy these two volumes. It is the complete first saga in HD, unlike the Ultimate Uncut series which left off a few episodes too early.Pokewhiz7 wrote:Fuck. Now I hope 1.1 and 1.2 don't get rare. Re: FUNimation DBZ TV Blu-ray Official On-Going Thread
All I can say is thank god I bought the DVD Dragon Boxes as they were released, and that they finished that run! I now wish they had put those resources towards a Dragon Ball or Movies Dragon Box instead of getting a bunch of poeple partially-invested in another format that might now not continue to completion. ;-(
