But as I do not approve of how they adapted the character, along with the rest of it, I am of COURSE going to discourage him from supporting what is a drastically bad movie and a terrible interpretation of the franchise as a whole.

Do I think he's a bad person for liking it? No. Do I think he's stupid? Not really, but I find his tastes questionable. Do I think he's less of a fan? I'm not even touching that one.

I merely feel that the movie should have kept Goku his original character instead of ruining what the entire franchise was built upon to be more "relevant." I disagree with his idea that this was a good idea and I'm going to say that, however I can, because I have different idea of how things should have been handled.

And as for Vegeta? Well, let's look at it this way. I don't approve of any of the OTHER characters changes, so WHY would I approve of a change for a huge character like Vegeta? Why would you assume that, anyway?
Eh, I don't want to drag this out. Let me just say that I agree with you. I like adaptions when they're accurate. Then again, I would probably enjoy this film even if it wasn't accurate so long as it's good, but it sounds like it has issues as just a film too, so yeah.

I have nothing against you disagreeing with people, thinking their opinions are crazy or having a fundamentally different view from theirs about the whole thing. You can outright say this to them, you're entitled to do so. It's the word 'discourage' I didn't like because it implies you're trying to change their mind or prevent them from expressing their opinion. And by actually saying you discourage them from doing so you sort of are insulting their opinion or indirectly making them feel bad for having it.

As for Vegeta, I was asking you your opinion but the rest wasn't aimed at you. I just have a feeling some fans wouldn't mind so much if they made him less evil, or less selfish, or whatever. Maybe not? Oh well.

I know I would. Before I knew how awesome Vegeta would be later, I hated his guts. I seriously wanted that fucker to die. It's great character development to have a character that you actually care enough about to want them to suffer. Now when I look back, it only makes the current Vegeta that much more of a great character.

I think the anime/manga Goku personality would have made this a very original superhero movie. But sadly, Hollywood doesn't favor originality.

But the "Pompous Asshole" is a pretty common character in movies. So I don't see them changing Vegeta much. They'll definitely give him more of a soft side, but he'll probably still be ruthless. I just hope they don't cast Topher Grace.

....

Okay.

I liked to think of myself as a lenient person when it comes to adaptations. I was willing to accept a toned-down or a heavily toned-down Goku. If Goku showed a bit of emotion regarding Chichi, well, that would be fine by me. If Goku had a bit of doubt, to then get confidence in the end, well, I'd be okay. And I'm fine with concessions to reality when working in a medium that relies on more reality. And I really liked the movie gi.

But Goku wasn't so much "changed" as he was "replaced", by an individual that really doesn't resemble him at all. I honestly saw a glimmer here and there when they were trying to make a Dragon Ball movie, but not ONCE did I actually see them try to make Goku anything other than their own Hollywood movie stereotype.

I don't know, for some reason, to me, other than the school related stuff (this includes interactions with Chi Chi) I thought he was fine as Goku. Well, Sean Schemmel Goku.

Oh also I was just thinking, I noticed a lot of people complaining on IMDB that the "Dragon Temple" is necessary to evoke Shenlong, well, maybe only the first time. And the reason I thought of this is because Rosh says "In order to resurrect Shenlong" Well maybe because he was never used/laid dormant for so long, it required the temple, but from here on out it isn't necessary?

I don't see it. I don't think you're stupid for thinking that or anything, I just can't see any version of Goku in this guy, which is odd because I thought I was pretty accepting of the possibility that this could be a good film.

He may not angst about it, but the idea isn't THAT different. He sits there and tries to hold back in order to conform to the normal kids. In fact, from the sounds of it, if this were Gohan I'd be okay with the character adaptation. :P
Hmm, maybe I do need to re-watch them. I'm always down with watching the Great Saiyaman saga.

It's strange that Gohan is slightly socially awkward in school, though... I mean... he seems perfectly natural and at ease when dealing with Bulma, Krillin, Goten, etc... I wonder if that's inconsistent writing at play.

I don't think so, really. He's always introduced to these people as Goku's son or grown up with them as a brother. In fact, I dont' think he ever actually meets people on his own until Orange Star High.

It's completely different to actually go out and meet people in the real world. He was homeschooled, and he was living out in the freaking mountains. He just didn't have a social life, and even Goku beats him in this category. So his awkwardness is understandable to me.

Agreed. That's basically what I'm hoping for here. I haven't seen most of DBE yet, but I get the sense that this is the perfect analogy. I enjoyed X-Men at first because... fuck... live action X-Men on the big screen!

Then X2 came out. And now I really have no reason to watch the first. And like DBE, I can find plenty of continuity mix ups to gripe about (way moreso, actually).

The changes in the first X-Men were made to make it palatable to the mainstream (where the money is going to come from) while still drawing in hardcore fans. Once the installed film fanbase was present, and the market had shown it would support good comic films, they went and made a much better sequal.

Soooo hopefully the second DBE will follow suit, if the first does alright, and they'll be comfortable taking "risks" to make a more DB-esque film.
To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.

Okay, I've watched the movie.

At first I was worried I wouldn't be able to distance my Dragonball fandom from this movie, and judge it on it's own merits, but to me that became very easy, as the movie did such a poor job of representing the franchise, I actually had to shake my head several times and remind myself I was watching a Dragonball movie and not an extended episode of smallville.

I might go into a more detailed rant later, but it all boils down to the fact that this movie isn't just a bad adaption, it's a bad movie.

Ah, I keep forgetting to ask:

Which of the 22 episodes of Smallville's nineth season do you think will rip DBE?

I wouldn't say the movie is bad, that would mean it has nothing good, no redeeming qualities or entertainment value. The dictionary definition of Mediocre appears to be a great description.

To anyone that saw the movie was there anything you did like about it? Was it entertaining? What parts did you like the most? Were there any pro's?

Wow that really is an on par assessment of this movie. DBE really is the dictionary definition of mediocre.

Okay...I'm not here to form my own opinions about the movie, or anything like that, and in fact I haven't even read more than about 3 pages of this thread (starting with Greg's review), but I do have a question that popped into my head after I listened to the podcast. As it stands, I've been away from DaizEX for a few months now and honestly forgot DBE was even hitting its Japanese release now, and was only reminded when I saw the review posted on Anime News Network when I went to look up something unrelated - which lead me curiously to the podcast to see just what Julian had to say about it. So if this has come up already in this nearly 150 page thread, forgive me.

I admit, I've more been on the side of 'I don't give a shit, it's not Dragonball, it won't affect me one way or the other' all this time, and I've intentionally avoided most DBE threads. Of course I was on the side who just knew it would be terrible, and wasn't the least bit interested or optimistic, but largely I didn't really care either way. Now that it's out however, it's hit me as one of those things where...now that you've heard conclusively from a few people who have seen it (with Greg, Julian, and the ANN reviewer, I've heard 3 reviews all along similar lines), and it's more than just rumors and a bunch of fans speculating what it'll be like based on the little trickles of information that have come through...I admit I kinda do want to see it, in the way of 'I've heard it's bad, but I need to see for myself to know just how bad it really is'. I mean, no way am I going to waste money when it premieres in the US (I'm not exactly a movie goer as it is), or buy the DVD when the time comes for that to roll around, but you know it'll find its way online eventually. And I've changed my mind of wanting to just shun it and pretend it doesn't even exist, because Dragonball as I know it won't really be affected by it...I'm going to have to check this one out for myself.

But getting to the point. This movie was made in the US, FOR the US, even if it's 'based on' a Japanese property. Yet it has premiered in Japan before America. I know this technique has been used before (if I'm not mistaken, Transformers premiered in Japan before here), but...never with something as epic as Dragonball was in Japan. And here in the US, while fans have had mixed feelings about this since the news of DBE first began to surface, everyone pretty much had an idea of what to expect - because like the FUNi dub or not, EVERY American DB fan knows about the treatment the series has gotten in this country, and how widely it is criticized. Even those who are dub supporters have heard the things dub criti...criticizers...uh...critics... (word escaped me for a minute there...) have had to say about it since the Saban days. They can't deny that the series is remarkably different in the states than it is in Japan, both in how it is presented/marketed and in how it is received - which is why so many Japanese purists insist that the English dub is truly a different series. It brings a completely different experience to the world of Dragonball, for better or worse, and the phenomenon in the states has always been drastically different than it was in Japan. This movie, even with some apparent nods to Japanese culture and the original version's terminology (Japanese writing on buildings, Oozaru, I think Julian mentioned that 'Muten Roshi' was said at one point, technique names, etc), was undoubtedly based on the franchise as we know it in the United States. Even if you look past the fact that the movie was targeted to a very different audience, it wasn't just that the movie was tailored in that way as an adaptation, but that it was BASED on the way the series has been perceived in the US - more about action and fighting and SUPER SPECIAL AWSUM ENERGY BLASTS LIEK WAO!!1111ONE!1 than the more lighthearted (even in Z), adventurous story it was in Japan. This movie was based on a very different viewpoint of what Dragonball is and represents - it was based on a very different franchise than what the Japanese know Dragonball to be.

So I'm curious, how exactly was/will this film be received in Japan? Will they be as harsh as us, or harsher, because the movie is so incredibly different than the franchise they knew? Or will they go easier on it because they haven't experienced everything the US has in terms of the franchise's bastardization? I've got ideas about that which could go either way; on the one hand, here, fans knew what to expect, in terms of it being based on and adapting the version of the series people in this country are familiar with, resulting in such things as corny dialogue and Yamcha's apparent 'surfer dude' persona. Of the legions of American DBZ fans who have followed this whole DBE thing since the start, very few were truly optimistic about it, and even the optimists knew flat out that this wouldn't accurately represent the series we know and love. We just kinda accepted that, whether optimistic or nay-saying the whole way through. And I mean, I'm sure Japan isn't completely ignorant, but I can't imagine even the most hardcore Japanese DB fanboys truly understand what our country has experienced from this franchise; from their point of view, they're just the country of origin for a franchise that has had success the world over. They're not going to zero in on the treatment of the American version when from their viewpoint there are dozens upon dozens of foreign language versions of the series.

The average Japanese viewer of DBE, as I imagine them, is someone who grew up following Dragonball - the Anime or a Manga, whether they be an avid Anime fan or just your average person who enjoyed the series as a child and, as adults often do for their childhood loves, pushed it into the back of their head as a nostalgic memory. They're not going to be the same as the fans who see this when it hits the US...and I honestly believe the theatres are more likely to be packed with critical/optimistic long-time fans like the DaizEX goers who have been following up on this stuff for a long time, not your legions of casual 10-15 year old Anime fanboys (because at least where I come from, DB hasn't been very popular in several years, and Naruto is the hot property...most DB fans aren't among that age demographic, but are among the 17-22 late high school/college group who got into watching it during the Toonami days). They're going to be expecting something totally different...er, probably. This is why I'm asking though; I'm basing this on the things I know regarding how different DB was in Japan than the US, not in terms of content and censoring and all that old news but in how the series itself was projected upon the masses. I'm not sure if this factor would make them more or less critical of the film...my speculation is less, but I'm probably just generalizing in that Japanese fans usually seem more lenient than rabid American fanboys and girls. I'm just guessing they're going to go into this theatre, having experienced at least a few American Hollywood films, knowing that yeah, it's going to be different, and especially that it's going to feel 'American', but...well, just how different do they expect it to be, if at all? For anyone who has actually seen the flick in Japan, maybe they can provide a little info towards what they've personally seen in the theatres (I know Greg already mentioned the other moviegoers in his review). I'm just really curious now on how this film is going to be received in Japan - because I think we all know by now, at least on a majority scale, how most US fans are expecting this movie to be.

TL;DR Dragonball in Japan and Dragonball in the US are two very different entities, so how do you suspect the Japanese public will receive this adaptation of a classic series?

Now then... *vanishes for another several month long hiatus*

Signs point to "not well." I think the initial shock value wearing off will be reflected in the second weekend numbers and that the film will be remembered as "silly Americans trying to make their own DragonBall."

I mean, come on. Masako Nozawa laughed at the previews for it along with a decent sized audience. I doubt anything has changed to make this more than a joke to them (and having seen it, while having a substantially different cultural background and being "lawl American," I'd have to agree).

Damn, two people posted while I was typing this, this is for Chrono Trigger.

Hmm well I will try to list them.

SPOILERS PEOPLE DON'T READ IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW!!!!

Things I liked:

1. Goku and Gohan's fight
2. Goofy moments felt appropriate
3. Goku's "fight" with the bullies
4. Goku and Bulma's confrontation
5. Goku eating like a pig
6. I preferred Bulma in this to the show, I find her annoying on the show. She is more brash and sarcastic.
7. The way the Dragonballs looked
8. Master Roshi was pretty well portrayed, although he was toned down a lot.
9. The way Ki looked, I remember when Goku is attempting the Kamehameha, little wisps of Ki come out, I really liked that scene.
10. I liked the Taichi esc sequence while learning the KameHameHa.
11. Goku's Blue Gi
12. The fact that they included a tournament.
13. Yamcha was pretty well done. Joon Park was a good choice.
14. Goku's confidence after the bully fight.
15. Most of the special effects looked cool.
16. Piccolo was great for what little he had.
17. Mai looked good, she even said Son Goku.
18. That it is never stated that oozaru is permanent (thank god).
19. The fight with Piccolo.
20. Some of the scenes had me grining although I can't remember everyone.
21. The Mafuba sequence was really cool.
22. Ernie Hudson did a good job with his small role.
23. Granpa Gohan was pretty good, he was silly which worked.
24. Piccolo's voice was awesome.
25. The futuristic world was not unlike Db's world.
26. Shenlong looked decent.
27. Oozaru rampaging like crazy kills Roshi.
28. That they used correct names (Son Goku, Mafuba, Sushinchu(sp), KameHameHa(not Kamayamaya) Paozu and so on)
29. Capsules and Capsule Corp.
30. Piccolo creates spawn.
31. Piccolo's airship.
32. The Ending KameHameHa was kinda cool.
33. The musical score.
34. Bulma and Yamcha were attracted to each other.
35. Chi Chi is unreasonably into Goku, and in one instance he seems weirded out.
36. The high school parts were very short. Weaver had one line I think.
37. Roshi's sense of humor.
38. The overall silly tone of the movie.
39. The look of the movie was somewhat unique with a lot of bright high contrast colors.
40. The fact that they kept Goku's clothes when not in the Kame gi in a similar color scheme. The final Gi he is shown in looked liek the one he took from Shuu.
41. Although Goku feels like an outsider it's more because Gohan won't let him be himself, not because he isn't confident.
42. Goku's rage at wanting to avenge Gohan.
43. The acting was decent all around.
44. Justin Chatwin actually looked in decent shape(something I was worried about).
45. Some cool choreography and camera shots.
46. Auras, Ki blasts, powering up all looked cool.
47. I don't recall Piccolo ever saying Goku was a Saiyan, or that his name is Kakarott, which is a good thing.
48. Thankfully no "I am not ready for this" or "You are the only one who can do it!"

Hmm... I guess that's it for now.

Things I didn't like:
1. Gohan telling Goku to hold back, making him feel like an outsider.
2. The high school parts, although short and quickly forgotten feel unnecessary. Really, Goku could have just meet Chi Chi at a tournament and they could have skipped the whole HS part since that was it's only purpose.
3. Goku pursuing Chi Chi. Even though it does make some sense considering the context.
4. The pace of the movie was ludicrously brisk. Things happen so quickly.
5. All the characters could have looked more accurate and still kept the semi realistic tone of the movie.
6. Some things go unexplained (Like how Piccolo escaped)
7. Yamcha never fights, I was hoping for a Rogafufuken.
8. Fight scenes are short.
9. Piccolo isn't built up all that well.
10. Piccolo is defeated too quickly, but it kind of makes sense considering he himself mentions he feels weak and needs the dragonballs for power.
11. Mai isn't ever really introduced or explained, but thank god they dropped the her being a namekian thing.
12. Piccolo's origin not explained, no mention of Mutaito, maybe they made the DBs and wished for Piccolo to be imprisoned?
13. Piccolo's motive never explained.
14. Oozaru being Piccolo's servant, but what happened to the one from 2000 years ago?
15. Goku only being Oozaru for a few minutes, didn't seem like he struggled that much to change back.
16. No mention of Kame style, no explanation of the symbols on his GI, not Turtle mentions at all. In fact Roshi has Cranes on his Hawaiian shirt, and the whole Shadow Crane Strike.
17. Goku's training was goofy like on the show, but he carried a huge load of stuff, would it have been hard to make him carry a ridiculously heavy turtle shell instead?
18. Goku is ridiculously strong yet no one finds this odd.
19. Some of the Goku Chi Chi stuff, the two scenes that stick out are the one when he goes to the training grounds, and the final scene.
20. Some of the funny stuff from the Junior Novel isn't in the movie.
21. Some of the stuff from the trailer isn't in the movie.
22. I am not a fan of Goku's Kame Gi, it seems overly complex. A Orange version of his Blue Gi would have been fine.
23. Things happen with no build up.
24. Chow Yun Fat pronounces some things oddly, "GoHanne" instead of "Gohon", and he says KamiHami Ha at one point.
25. The fulum, although a nice nod to the show, were a waste and only appeared for maybe 2 minutes.

I guess that's it. I can't think of much else.
