I just started watching the Ginyu episodes with Schemmel's early Goku dub and noticed a slight difference with Vegeta's voice. Since it was re-dubbed for the sake of these new season sets, they were done at a different time than the episodes from the Ultimate Uncut dub and you can tell that his voice is a little higher than his voice in the previous episode. I'm guessing this is what EX meant when he said Sabat's Vegeta dub voice changed drastically from the episodes to the more current video games?
Also, I noticed that the dubbing is at least staying consistent in terms of flashback scenes. In particular, I'm talking about Vegeta's "pompous witness" line when he's wondering if Goku's become a Super Saiyan. The dub dialogue is the same when it's flashback-ed in the Buu Saga during Vegeta's "You're #1" speech.

I knew something was kinda iffy with that line. Thanks for correcting metheoriginalbilis wrote:It's "pauper's witness." I just watched the fake Namek saga (I wanted to see how damaged my disc was... see a few pages back). Anyways... I noticed one of the fake Namekians calls his ship "Goku" in the Japanese version. FUNimation changed it to "Wukong". I thought that was kinda cool cause Wukong was Goku's name in the Hong Kong dub.
Isn't Wukong the character from Journey to the West that Goku is loosely based on?Tanooki Kuribo wrote:I just watched the fake Namek saga (I wanted to see how damaged my disc was... see a few pages back). Yeah, that's not a coincidence. For anyone that doesn't know, Gokuu is the Japanese pronunciation for the characters that make up Wukong (悟空) of JttW. So it's only natural that when Dragon Ball was translated into Chinese, his name had the Chinese pronunciation again.fps_anth wrote:Isn't Wukong the character from Journey to the West that Goku is loosely based on?Tanooki Kuribo wrote:I just watched the fake Namek saga (I wanted to see how damaged my disc was... see a few pages back). But for some reason, FUNimation seems to have a thing for taking things with Japanese names and giving them the equivalent Chinese ones for their English dub. (Like Ten to Tien, and Shuu to Shao.) I don't really see the point of it, at least in the situations they do it. I guess it's just one of many things I'll never understand about them.

Actually Rachel, "Shao" was retconned (so to speak) after the first 13 episodes and was called "Shuu" in all following dub instances. And for what its worth, FUNi did give "Tenshinhan" a fitting homage (considering the damage was already done with his name) with the surname "Shinhan" in original DB and DBZ movie 9. Then again, that may've been done just to cover up Bulma's odd choice of name pronunciation for him in an early Ocean dub episode.TripleRach wrote:(Like Ten to Tien, and Shuu to Shao.) Oh, I'm quite aware that they changed it back to Shuu after that. (I know the DB dub disturbingly well.) But my point was just that they did it at all. And the Shinhan thing doesn't change the fact that they otherwise exclusively called him by the Mandarin reading of the first character in his name. It just means they're mixing two different languages in one name, which is even worse, IMO.Conan the SSJ wrote:Actually Rachel, "Shao" was retconned (so to speak) after the first 13 episodes and was called "Shuu" in all following dub instances. Anyway, I swear there are other examples of this Japanese to Mandarin silliness, but those were the only two I could think of.

Well, I just finished going through the dubbed Ginyu episodes and I've gotta say that I'm disgusted. Not only did they keep Vegeta's lines about Goku (as in not "Kakarrot" and "Mondo Cool," but they also kept Ginyu's lines about "clean underwear when going to the hospital" and Goku's additional lines trying to convince Ginyu to stop fighting him. Yet, Vegeta's "Mr. Hot-Pants" line was removed! It just seems so random as to what lines should be kept and which ones shouldn't be.
It just makes me wonder how much the dub writers are willing to change from the original dub script for future season sets (stuff like Piccolo's YES! lines in the Freeza Saga and the narrator's "Krillin's in da house!').
And it's even stranger if you're following the dub episodes in the set in order, since you're transitioning from the Ultimate Uncut dub episodes with Vegeta and Recoome saying some major old "dub taboos" like "damn" and "hell."

I think the reason they didn't change any Ginyu lines is because they didn't re-dub Goku. Like if they changed some lines for Ginyu, Goku's responce probley woulnd't make sence.but they also kept Ginyu's lines about "clean underwear when going to the hospital" and Goku's additional lines trying to convince Ginyu to stop fighting him.

But that still doesn't explain Vegeta and Krillin's lines, since even though they were re-dubbed, some of their lines remained the same.Tanooki Kuribo wrote:I think the reason they didn't change any Ginyu lines is because they didn't re-dub Goku. LOL, DaemonCorps, we seem to have thought about the very same things after seeing these episodes (see my reaction on the previous page).
Had another random comment on the dub version....Chris Sabat really should have redubbed his season 3 Jeice, too. My god, some of those line deliveries are awful. And that horrible "Nya ha ha ha" laugh he uses at one point....ick.

I enjoyed watching this Season Set. I am not bothered by the widescreen or the cropping although i would of prefered a full screen release any day. The audio is fantastic and very consistent except for Goku and Gohan in the Ginyu Saga the voices should of be redubbed. The image quality was pretty good, but i am a little dissapouinted with the change of the colour. The characters are way too bright and krillin and gohan look so white.
overall i enjoyed this release, there is a lot of room for improvemnt but i will accept these releases if funimation wont release anymore. Even if you dont like the cropping the set is pretty good otherwise. At least we get a lot more consistensy in the voices of most characters.

Heh, I guess you're right. Once I submitted my post about the voices, I was like "aw crap, didn't someone else say the same thing?"sailorspazz wrote:LOL, DaemonCorps, we seem to have thought about the very same things after seeing these episodes (see my reaction on the previous page).
You could tell that most (if not all) of the characters during the Ginyu episodes that weren't re-dubbed were a little different from their current dub voices. I particularly noticed the voices of Gohan and Bulmasailorspazz wrote:Had another random comment on the dub version....Chris Sabat really should have redubbed his season 3 Jeice, too. And about this set in general, I was kinda disappointed that there weren't any actual extras except for the handful of trailers. Sure, the extras from the season one set tried even more to hide their screwups, but at least they had some. For future sets, I'd like some Toonami promos of the show, a documentary of the show (done in the style of those VH1 "When <blank> Ruled the World" shows) and how it came from Japan to how it came to the US, and the dub VAs (and even the Japanese VAs if they could get them) thoughts on the show and voicing certain characters. I'd even settle for a commentary track like they did for the Dead Zone movie (I didn't really learn anything new about the movie from the commentary, but some of their comments were funny, at least).

I've even caught at least one, maybe two, "bastards."DaemonCorps wrote:And it's even stranger if you're following the dub episodes in the set in order, since you're transitioning from the Ultimate Uncut dub episodes with Vegeta and Recoome saying some major old "dub taboos" like "damn" and "hell."

Yeah thats what I liked about the "Ultimate Uncuts" is that they actually used damn, hell, and bastard. I was pretty surprised. I heard some launguage in the movies too.Thanos6 wrote:I've even caught at least one, maybe two, "bastards."DaemonCorps wrote:And it's even stranger if you're following the dub episodes in the set in order, since you're transitioning from the Ultimate Uncut dub episodes with Vegeta and Recoome saying some major old "dub taboos" like "damn" and "hell."

Last two should have been possible, don't know why they didn't do it for the first season (Would have made lots of sense if they did). Hell, the documentary would have been gold, including interviews of the VAs, plus fans. And about this set in general, I was kinda disappointed that there weren't any actual extras except for the handful of trailers. But yeah. Hopefully they add some in Season 3.

The "Gokuu vs. Vegeta" feature they had on the Ultimate Uncuts where they had interviews with the English voices and fans about that legendary matchup was pretty good. If they could keep doing stuff like that it would be cool. Better than just having trailers, which barely count as extras, since they even play a trailer at the beginning of each disc (I LOLed at how they felt the "Baki the Grappler" trailer on Season 2 needed to be even more "X-TREME!!11!one" than the one on the Season 1 set....."BAKI THE GRAPPLAAAAAAAAR!" Sorry, that last part wasn't really on topic, it just amused me....)
