I think they're both fine, I really only dislike the noses on Yamamuro's designs. When the characters are on-model, they're really good designs, though. I do prefer Karasawa's style, but he's fucking fantastic on every front.

I'd hate to have someone like, say, Tate as our character designer, even though he's a much better animator than Yamamuro is.

Karasawa on the left and Yamamuro on the right.

I think that Karasawa could make a fine character designer. He doesn't seem too stuck in the past but he still knows what made the Dragonball anime look good. Even when he applys the highlights, they still don't take much away from his character art.

Noticed Mazingerdestro on that picture of Ajay's. He seems to be mistaking Karasawa for Shimanuki. I don't have a twitter so i'm posting this here because I know he has an account.

I made a bet with Alee9977 that Vegeta won't be beaten quickly by an opponent. If I lose, I switch my avatar to Vegeta getting beat by hit. If I win, he switches it to Vegeta holding Black by his hair. This will last a month.

Agree on Tate. Character designs aren't animation, and Tate has never really stood out when it comes to his drawings.

I tweeted to him, that he is probably talking about shimanuki.

I like Yamamuro too. Don't really understand the hate for his art style.

I've been wanting BANK animation for a long time. Hopefully they'll be able to better incorporate it down the line.

I like his shading much better, but I don't care for his perportions - particularly the larger than necessary eyes...

That Shida cut was great, but let's not get too carried away.

The animation of Dead Zone and The Worlds Strongest to me is the best the whole franchise has ever seen.

Also, Shida did another cut in the BOG movie that is actually better than this one (the one where Goku screems "i will not let you destroy my woooooooorld"). Where i do agree with you is that it is probably one of the best cuts in the franchise, but i'm not completely sure of that, because there are some insane cuts in the first 2 arcs of DBZ.

So, I remember everyone stating their favorite animators in the beginning of this thread. Anyone change their opinions? Mine was Kitano and Ishikawa, but now it's definitely Karasawa and Tate.

The first 2 arcs had some good animation but I don't remember anything that really comes close to Shida's most recent cut. Seigasha and Junio had probably the best cuts around those first 2 arcs but even then they weren't that special. The first 15 seconds of that cut pretty much outclassed a lot of Dragonball animation, movies included.

Yamamuro's piece linked above is pretty bad. Looks like those Naruto manga panels we used to colour back in the day on a summer afternoon.

Not to mention the ugly (and wide) face and nose.

Ishikawa followed by Tate. But that's what it's been for quite some time.

Aside from the nose I'm with you 100% that I think the one on the right looks better.

Just from the top of my head, this is one of the best pieces of animation in Dragon Ball everything i've ever seen in my life.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0rrht-rhU0

There are also some crazy scenes in the Goku vs Vegeta fight in the saiyan arc and in Goku vs Frieza and in SSJ Goku vs Frieza. Its really hard to point a finger on which is the best in the whole franchise.

Shida's cut in episode 57 of DBS was really really good, but i've yet to see a cut like that first part of that video in DBS. Of course, with modern animation. Imagine that same cut with 2016 visuals and technology.

Now, as i said before, Shida's cut in DBS is one of the best in the whole franchise, but I'm still not sure its THE best. Get what i mean??

I still say some of the Studio Junio episodes from the King Piccolo saga to around the Frieza saga stand as the best animated stuff to come from the main series excluding the movies (Masaki Sato's a god!) but this episode is definitely up there. When Yamamuro got promoted to the head of Shindou Pro it seemed the Maeda Minoru team took a hit and their episodes weren't as good anymore, while the Shindou episodes looked pretty great (although not up to par with peak Junio as far as the actual animation)
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

He's consistently drawn with thick eye lines, but sometimes they forget. The bottom is more accurate to how he's been drawn most of the time.

Yeah, they reused the Kamehameha shot from #48, but redrew the hair and mouth:

They also took Goku's charge from the start of the episode and reused it later on minus the aura:

I didn't notice that second one at all. That bit of reuse reminds me of the kind of animation reuse they used to do back in the original 3 series.
