"Dragon Ball Super" Series Official Announcement & Discussion Thread
Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
Yeah, directing is definitely a major element. Nobody comes to film and television for the story, they come for the manner in which the story is told to them. If one only cared about the story they'd be satisfied with merely reading a Wikipedia article. Storytelling is directing, storyboarding, animation, backgrounds, coloring, sound effects, music and voice performances, too, not merely dialogue. What information is given when and how plays a big part in creating a sense of excitement, tension and engagement in the viewer. Shokugeki no Souma is one of those series that heavily benefits from its stellar directing. Episode #7 has one of the best storyboards of the series. A simple hallway discussion is suddenly multi-dimensional in scope merely because of where the camera is placed. One sees not only the hallway and students within it but also the courtyard outside and the group of students also having a conversation. The inner wall isn't simply framed as a straight horizontal line, either, it's diagonal.
Dragon Ball never survived based on its story, it survived based on its storytelling. Series Director Chioka Kimitoshi has a record for interesting storytelling which will, with any luck, be highlighted in Dragon Ball Super.

Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
Super is coming out, what, eighteen years after the last show ended? Does anyone really expect this series to be as good as the original two? Don't get your hopes up too high. We haven't even seen anything from it besides the logo.
We should just be glad we are getting more Dragon Ball. That's why I appreciate GT. No, it isn't nearly as good as DB or Z but I still love it because it's more Dragon Ball. Same thing with BoG. It wasn't my favorite, but I just appreciate seeing my favorite show still around.
My expectations for Super aren't too high. I expect it to be between Buu saga quality and GT quality. Nothing special, nothing that bad.

I don't get the mentality of "we should just enjoy more Dragon Ball". Should we enjoy it even if it's garbage? We can be grateful for having new Dragon Ball, but if it's bad and boring, I don't see why we should force ourselves to like it just because it's new content (I'm not saying DBS will be bad, I'm just throwing it out there). You can count on one hand the number of people who are glad they got Bio Broly.
Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
lets hope not. I'd rather have this new franchise stop completely or keep making decent movies every other year or so than that.Weedity wrote:I expect it to be between Buu saga quality and GT quality

Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
There are better directors and animators potentially available to Dragon Ball Super then were available to the first two series. It's certainly possible to make something really good should time be on the production staff's side.Weedity wrote:Super is coming out, what, eighteen years after the last show ended? I think it's going to be on the same level or better then Z due to Toriyama's involvement.Weedity wrote: Does anyone really expect this series to be as good as the original two ? Don't get your hopes up too high.
July 9th 2018 will be remembered as the day Broly became canon.
Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
Is it weird that out of the three Broly movies, I enjoyed Bio Broly the most? I mean all three are basically my least favorite, but Bio Broly was my personal favorite of the three. The second being the worst.Doctor. wrote:I don't get the mentality of "we should just enjoy more Dragon Ball". Should we enjoy it even if it's garbage? Back on topic though, if the new Dragon Ball show and/or movies were garbage, then no we shouldn't just "enjoy" more Dragon Ball. IMO even GT wasn't garbage. None of the movies were really "garbage" either. That's why I just enjoy any new Dragon Ball we get. I just don't expect Super to compare to Z. I'd love it to though!

I don't expect Super to be as good as DBZ or DB, but i do expect it to be enjoyable like the two previous movies.
Hi
Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
Even if I think it would ideal, I know is too much to ask for Movie 12 and Movie 13 quality of animation. *sigh*
In any case, I would be satisfied with a quality between the Jump Special and RoF with the only thing I would really ask is for them to stop giving everyone the annoying shiny/glossy effect to their skin. For the fights, I wish there was more choreographed battles and not the simply random "flurry of blows".

Check out Journey's End, a short story of Goku and Vegeta's final days. "Time is running out for the last two Saiyans"
Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
Movies 12 & 13 are full of beautiful animation/artstyle.
That was Yamamuro back when he was skilled, wasn't it?
I'll go check.
I just wanna know what year it takes place. F left Gokû and Vegeta in a surprisingly pleasant place with each other (not that Super couldn't reset that by having Gokû upset Vegeta off screen somehow) and if it does take place then I'll be interested to see how things turn out.

Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
I agree with this. Though, to be fair, I like Bio Broly for what it was. That movie's biggest mistake was making the main villain Broly; it could have been the same blob monster with a different name. But I guess it was for the sake of selling it.Doctor. wrote:I don't get the mentality of "we should just enjoy more Dragon Ball". Should we enjoy it even if it's garbage? Hell no. Assuming Kai (Final Chapters) has been successful, you can expect subpar music and animation. Also, based on these new movies, the tone will not be the same as the Saiyan-Cell sagas--probably not even Buu saga. Add the fact that we have OP Beerus and Whis in the party, and Toriyama seems like he wants to keep them in a pedestal. And finally, all these new lame ass transformations that have replaced awesome ones. My expectations are as low as low can be. That said, I'll probably still be entertained more than I was with GT, and give it a fair chance.Weedity wrote:Super is coming out, what, eighteen years after the last show ended? I prefer it dead and buried than tainted with filth. We should just be glad we are getting more Dragon Ball. That's why I appreciate GT. Kind of-ish. Movies #12-13 had a lot of key animators who were simply good at drawing on-model.Chuquita wrote:Movies 12 & 13 are full of beautiful animation/artstyle.

Nice one. Font from the old logo just really chases with new Chou part, this looks so much easier on the eyesLapis wrote:Also tried to do a logo :p

That's not going away. That's how Dragon Ball is now, at least if Yamamuro is still the character designer which he probably will be to keep consistency with the recent movies.soulnova wrote: In any case, I would be satisfied with a quality between the Jump Special and RoF with the only thing I would really ask is for them to stop giving everyone the annoying shiny/glossy effect to their skin.

I wouldn't go as far as the say the new material as "filth". Most of it has been pretty good with a few exceptions (EOB and Kai 2.0). But everybody has an opinion.I prefer it dead and buried than tainted with filth.

I'm sure you can see the difference between the tone in the Android saga, the History of Trunks special, and BoG, right?Lord Beerus wrote: The tone of Super is gonna be action/comedy/drama, like it was with the manga, the movies, GT etc.

The new stuff is riddled with terrible ideas and fluff. It still entertains me enough to give it a chance though, unlike GT, which was boring as ****.I wouldn't go as far as the say the new material as "filth". Beerus was running around like an idiot, if that was a serious fight it wouldn't have ended in one hit. It was supposed to be funny.
