Just saw the movie a couple of hours ago...I kind of enjoyed. The pacing was bad, everything happened too fast, and too many characters were introduced and none of them were given much attention. They were all pretty one dimensional (Yamcha in particular). Piccolo was only on screen for about a total of 10 minutes. And some of the fighting moves looked a little off. At times it felt like you had to have watched the series to understand what exactly was happening (I'm sure people who haven't seen the series were confused at times). The final fight was anti-climactic. And overall, the movie was too short for all that it was trying to cover.

And the whole "first rule is there are no rules" thing was weird. I can't believe they used such a cliche as 'Gohan's words of wisdom'.

Despite all of that, I found the movie to be a guilty pleasure. I liked Chatwin and Roshi the best, Mai and Yamcha were pretty cool (even though presence wasn't explained). I was entertained the whole time, and it was great to see Dragonball, in any form, on the big screen.

Quantity does not equal quality.

Not saying whether or not the movie's bad(in this post), but I think that has to be said.

You're forgetting that this is a GLOBAL total.

That kind of total is actually VERY bad considering the budget. Good would be if the total actually went beyond the budget.

Yeah, but it's just half, and it's been out for a while now in the rest of the world

Even if it wasn't global, that's still pretty bad seeing as it's only a little more than half of the budget(i.e. if this was ALL the movie made, they'd have lost 20 mil). But still, next week will most likely be the deciding factor in it's U.S. profit.

tbh I thought it was only released in asia and some parts of europe.. not?

The link you provided is totaled from the 5th. So it covers the release everywhere but the US. Making only 2 million from the 23 million made by Asia is rather...pitiful. It's very doubtful the US will bring in more in order to break the budget.

It'll definitely make its budget back, the only question is how much profit it will make. If you include TOTAL box office (everywhere right up until it leaves theaters) and DVD sales (the DVD should sell a lot because it has extended and deleted scenes, confirmed) then there's no doubt about that.

The studio doesn't care where the money comes from, as long as it makes money.

Pretty much every single last bit of anecdotal evidence I've heard on the industry side of things is that consumers can't care any less about that kind of stuff, and want to pay less to have just the movie by itself... if they even pay to own movies on plastic discs any more at all.

Are you kidding? In addition to a huge population, we're the most movie-going country around. And in this recession, studio profits are actually -up- from last year (don't ask me how). I'm sure they'll make a profit, but I wouldn't be surprised if Hannah Montana came in at #1 this weekend. I work for an ABC affiliate (so Miley and I share the same slave master - Disney), and we've been promoting the shit out of it. I haven't seen anything promotion-wise for DBE, but then again I never watch TV except at work. Still, DBE will rake in the 9-14 crowd of boys, simply because their sisters will be at Hannah Montana.

So true. The problem is, ever since DVD came around, they've been shooting extra material specifically so they can call it "deleted and extended" in hopes of increasing perceived value. It was a nifty idea back when they were actually "hidden gems" (Pulp Fiction, anyone?) but today the content is by and large a joke.

That's odd... I only buy DVDs if there is at least 1 hour of bonus content and commentaries. I got more enjoyment out of the Star Wars Episode 1 DVD behind-the-scenes stuff than the movie itself.

Going to see it at the 10 showing tonight. The thing I think is hilarious is that this theater is known as the "best" in the area, and they usually have "big" movies playing on at least 2 screens. Dragonball Evolution has 4 showtimes between this afternoon and tonight. Hannah Montanna, on the other hand, has about 12.
