Tetsuya Nomura is great and all, but he/she is no Yoshitaka Amano.
They're not much diffrient in the sense that they've both designed a majority of the FF characters, and have a lot of repeativeness in their designs.
However Nomura has a number advantages over him and a number of other artists/designers. For instance he's able to draw/design in multiple art styles, rather then just one specific one. He's also proven himself as a director with the Kingdom Hearts series and Advent Children (note KH1 was the first thing he ever directed or was in charge of and look how it turned out) while also becoming more invovled with the writing process for certain stuff too.
Also I've found with Amano that his stuff never really evolves or changes or has stayed the same in a lot of ways. Like all his characters almost all have the same height, build, and basic face. Also everything I've seen from him is water colored, with some sketch stuff too. Then there's also the fact that all of his characters have to be redesigned by other artists for games, anime, etc, because of how hard it is to recreate his style in a moving medium. I mean he's not a terrible artist or desginer, but he's got his faults.
