I think that Jiren and Toppo have a lot of room for their dynamic to be expanded into a romantic one—and via subtext it feels like it already is in a way—so I definitely hope that we can someday attain a story where this queer subtext becomes just plain text.

Like I said before, I feel the anime deliberately tries to keep Kale and Caulifla’s relationship vague enough that it can be interpreted either way. There is most certainly a case to be made about Kale having a crush on her ‘sis,’ but even if we all were to agree that she does have a crush, we’re still not sure if Caulifla reciprocates, and the show doesn’t dwell much on their relationship. I’d even argue it could potentially come off as queerbaiting.

Regardless, media in general seems to have a more accepting attitude when it comes to same-sex attraction between girls compared to men, including Japan, where this stuff seems pretty prominent in stuff like magical girl series. If Jiren were to be a gay man, and it wasn’t played for cheap laughs, that would be a much bolder direction compared to the somewhat ambiguous schoolgirl crush thing with Caulifla and Kale. It would also probably piss off a bunch of the YouTube channels who are currently losing their minds over She-Hulk and Amazon’s LotR.

There are a lot of things that Dragon Ball isn't, but fans would like it to be. Like a self-serious drama, or a slice of life story, or a story that takes place in a universe governed by internally-consistent scientific laws.

Dragon Ball has always changed and art in general changes, so I don't see how this is an issue at all.

We can criticize how Dragon Ball handles its character relationships. We can hope for things to improve. Dragon Ball isn't incapable of changing and improving.
