"Dragon Ball Super" Animation Staff Discussion
Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Animation Staff Discussion
I suspect Chioka is busy just trying to approve the work of the other staff members and does not have the time to storyboard himself. I'd love to see him handle the next big episode, but I'm not sure he'll be able to.
Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Animation Staff Discussion
Thats sucks. Now the only thing I can hope for is that in uni.6 arc toriyama-sensei has some kind of involvement in episodes.JulieYBM wrote:I suspect Chioka is busy just trying to approve the work of the other staff members and does not have the time to storyboard himself. Gotta wonder when Yamamuro will work directly on another episode, kinda surprised that he's not worked on much.

Character designers usually only work on important episodes.ArchedThunder wrote:Gotta wonder when Yamamuro will work directly on another episode, kinda surprised that he's not worked on much.

Was Iseki a special guest/a fresh breath of air in the animation supervisors rotation schedule? He did only one episode out of 25 as far as we know.
Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Animation Staff Discussion
It seems so. He was available, was brought on and has not returned. It might be a scheduling issue.raulvalente wrote:Was Iseki a special guest/a fresh breath of air in the animation supervisors rotation schedule? He did only one episode out of 25 as far as we know.
Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Animation Staff Discussion
Shame then, Iseki was my favorite so far.
But I hope we get a lot more Yammamuro and Shida episodes in the future, especially when the new arc starts.

Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Animation Staff Discussion
Shida hasn't been an animation supervisor for anything in ten years, other than key animation he only storyboards for other directors. I do wish Shida would be a supervisor for at least one episode. He was supervisor for the Openings of the 1990s game openings.
Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Animation Staff Discussion
Just read this weekend's the One Piece special I forgot about and we'll find out if that's where Shida's been. (What a waste of Shida if true. It's a Foxy Pirates special of all things.)
On hiatus.
Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Animation Staff Discussion
But Shida's not MIA, he's storyboarding for Super, having done 5 episodes already (2,7,11,18 and 22). That's all he's been doing this semester, except for two quick key animation cuts.Chuquita wrote:Just read this weekend's the One Piece special I forgot about and we'll find out if that's where Shida's been. I've only been looking for his animation.

Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Animation Staff Discussion
It would be a good a surprise, If Toei was "sacrificing" BOG/ROF arcs in order to focus in Universe 6, but that's too much optimism for me.
A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.
Favourite old DB Animators: Masaki Sato and Tadayoshi Yamamuro
Favourite new DB Animators: Yuya Takahashi and Chikashi Kubota

Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Animation Staff Discussion
It's not likely, especially since Tate Naoki is the series' one good, regular animation supervisor so far. Chioka Kimitoshi and friends are trying their best to make every episode as good as possible one week at a time, to a fault. The staff need to sacrifice episodes, extend recaps and use BANK animation to lessen the workload of each episode until they can get further ahead of schedule. Tate should be pulling a Shinbou/Wakabayashi combination by only doing one every eight or so episodes, like the aforementioned pairing did for Yuu Yuu Hakusho. Right now he's being waste unable to do as many cool cuts per episode as he could with a little more time.
Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Animation Staff Discussion
BANK animation would be nice but this series doesn't have many chances to use it. By the way, I have always wondered, does BANK mean anything?
Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Animation Staff Discussion
BANK animation is what we might call 'stock footage'. You "go to the bank" to re-use elements. It's the term used in the Japanese industry, with 'BANK' written out in English letters and such. Dragon Ball Super is in the perfect position to have BANK animation because it isn't based on a comic. The series simply needs to be crafted around the concept, like by having characters wear the same clothes. Having a set of BANK animation for transformations and special attacks will eat up time and let drawings be used elsewhere, too. At this point the BANK doesn't even need to be good, just toss something together and re-use it in episodes handled by weaker staff so cuts (shots) and drawings can be saved for good staff. Having a cool re-usable transformation sequence for Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan Gokuu and Vegeta would be nice, especially if there were on the level of PreCure.alakazam^ wrote:BANK animation would be nice but this series doesn't have many chances to use it. Ideally we wouldn't really need 'BANK' animation, but Dragon Ball Super isn't produced in a series of ideal circumstances, it is produced in Hell.

They do have a whole movie with better animation, still don't know why they didn't just take something from that.

Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Animation Staff Discussion
I imagine they haven't done it because it would be jarring as fuck to be cutting back and forth between made-for-TV quality animation/artwork/shading and movie-quality animation/artwork/shading/CG.Makai wrote:They do have a whole movie with better animation, still don't know why they didn't just take something from that.
Alternatively, I guess there could potentially be rights issues, depending on exactly who is on the production committee for Super versus who was on the production committee for RF.
Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Animation Staff Discussion
DB never used it though, it would be a bit jarring to have it suddenly introduced. Plus it brings problems too. Tokusatsu and magical girls notoriously overuse stock transformations and attacks and the actual episodes often end up no longer than 15 mintues. Sure, the animation is usually top-notch (as is CGI in live-action), but after seeing the same sequences 50 times in 1 season it gets old very fastJulieYBM wrote:Having a cool re-usable transformation sequence for Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan Gokuu and Vegeta would be nice, especially if there were on the level of PreCure.

Digimon did that too, right?
I remember Tri's transformation scenes were getting on my nerves after a while.

Toei Animation and Fuji TV don't own the rights to the movie by themselves.Makai wrote:They do have a whole movie with better animation, still don't know why they didn't just take something from that.
Besides, the one thing you can say about the movie is that it's on-model...that's it. Outside of a few shots of effects animation the animation really isn't good, it simply has a lot of drawings used to have movement...not-good movement, at that.
That's the point. Do new stuff to save time, drawings and resources. The current plan is just digging the hole deeper and deeper for the production.Basaku wrote:DB never used it though, it would be a bit jarring to have it suddenly introduced.
