I agree with the review not the score, I do agree these are better than the OBs but it's plagued by over contrast/brightness in some cases is fine but not for every scene! I would say these are an upgrade to the OBs, not the levels or dboxs though.Hellspawn28 wrote:Has Blu-Ray.com review been posted yet? They seem to give it a okay review.

Dang....They're pumping them out quick no? lol Didn't it take a little longer for the Orange Bricks to get released compared to these?Baggie_Saiyan wrote:I think they'll complete these, they ain't got nothing to lose, right?samuraix123 wrote:I hope Funimation doesn't cancel this new release because I just gave all the Orange Bricks to my brother! My collection looks a little empty without them But those Dragon-boxes make up for it. No seriously, I'm gonna start buying these when they get to around Freeza or Cell Saga.
Also, Freeza is being released on AF day and I'd except the Garlic/Trunks saga to be out mid-June.
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

Just being curious, but how hard would it be to add options for Grain Removal [Off, Low, Medium, High] or Aspect Ratios [4:3/16:9] ? You know, to please all of the fans!

Pretty sure that'd be impossible... Each option would need a separate encode of the videoBlack_Anime_Fan wrote:Just being curious, but how hard would it be to add options for Grain Removal [Off, Low, Medium, High] or Aspect Ratios [4:3/16:9] ? You know, to please all of the fans!
Unless they used double-sided discs like old DVDs used to have. But I've never seen it with blu-ray so I'm not sure if it'd even work

No, he means discs that are readable by the player on both sides, like a vinyl record.Black_Anime_Fan wrote:You mean like those Blu-Ray/DVD combos I hate oh so much that I've seen floating around? Yeah...no
On a side note, I actually like BD/DVD combo packs, so I can watch the BD on my TV when at home, and the DVD on my laptop when traveling, since it doesn't have a BD reader.

Re: Dragon Ball Z "Seasons" Coming To Blu-ray (Updated 12/31
I just went through it frame by frame and it's weird. The frames of this particular scene from the season blu rays don't match up with the frames from the level sets.MarcFBR wrote:You know you grabbed the wrong frame and the white spot isn't actually on the frame you grabbed from the Blu-ray set right?qjz123 wrote:If you look at Goku's arm in the cropped raw film scan shot you'll see a white speck on it. http://imageshack.com/a/img268/4816/6w6n.png Now look at the same shot on the season blu rays. http://imageshack.com/a/img11/7976/8lv0.png You'll notice the brightness has been turned all the way up, it seems like Funimation raised the brightness on his arm so they wouldn't have to bother cleaning up the white speck.
The 3 frames before the scene switches to vegeta on the season blu rays: If you look at the cloud on the right side of the image you'll notice that the cloud moves to right from the 1st frame to the 2nd then it doesn't move from the 2nd to the 3rd then the scene switches to Vegeta.

http://imageshack.com/a/img571/1459/175g.png
http://imageshack.com/a/img46/5269/ijl8.png
However on the level sets the cloud moves to the right from the 1st frame to the 2nd then it actually moves back to the left from the 2nd to the 3rd then the scene switches to Vegeta.

I don't know if Funimation took a frame out or if they repeated a frame to avoid the tape mark on the bottom of the image http://imageshack.com/a/img839/266/ibdt.png but the shot I posted from the season blu rays is as close as it gets to matching the frame from the raw film scan.

Well, they repeated frames on the Blue Bricks to avoid tape marks... Maybe that's what's going on here too? Looks like on the Level set they replaced it with the wrong frame.qjz123 wrote:I don't know if Funimation took a frame out or if they repeated a frame to avoid the tape mark on the bottom of the image http://imageshack.com/a/img839/266/ibdt.png but the shot I posted from the season blu rays is as close as it gets to matching the frame from the raw film scan.
I thought they were redrawing and splicing the damaged areas on the film. If they're just duplicating frames, then it doesn't seem their process of removing the damage was quite as extensive as they led on. Now I wonder how the process could have been so expensive if a great bulk of it was just duplicating frames, which they'd done with Dragon Ball.

Okay then.Gaffer Tape wrote:I'm not saying it is. I wholeheartedly agree with you. What they did to DBZ was terrible. I just find it somewhat humorous that so many people seem to use a different term for the same thing just with a different application. It seems that "cropping" has adopted a very negative connotation, but saying something is "zoomed in" apparently sounds much more positive and upbeat.
These BluRays and the Orange Bricks are heavily cropped in order to make the footage widescreen despite the show not being framed for that, resulting in a significant loss of footage that even intrudes upon the absolute minimum area that Toei wanted us to see. In exchange we get a tiny bit of extra footage on the side that was far outside the boundaries of Toei's intended framing and as such no important information is contained in these extra 5% of horizontal footage.
By comparison, the Blue Bricks have some slight cropping on all four sides compared to the old Saga-sets, but it's minor enough that it does not cut out anything within said boundary of place all the important bits of the picture within this square plz that Toei was operating with when they animated the show. Perhaps if you watch the set on an old tube TV, the overscan might intrude upon this action-safe area a tiny bit, but I doubt it, and in any case the cropping on these sets is not bad enough to damage the overall framing in any significant manner.
There ya go, I just described them both as being cropped while still clarifying why the cropping on one of them is okay while the other isn't.

I wouldn't say either is "okay". Just that one is significantly less intrusive and detrimental than the other.

I personally think it's acceptable, since it seems to have been done to realign the frames. The saga DVDs are slightly rotated compared to the Dragon Boxes, and the bricks correct this. I think it's a decent trade off.Gaffer Tape wrote:I wouldn't say either is "okay". Just that one is significantly less intrusive and detrimental than the other.

What they could do is accommodate extra files but this would have meant that it'd also need more discs and FUNimation's going for a budget release.Black_Anime_Fan wrote:Just being curious, but how hard would it be to add options for Grain Removal [Off, Low, Medium, High] or Aspect Ratios [4:3/16:9] ? There's also plenty other cases which would've benefited from this scenario if FUNimation had been faithful to the original work, i.e, Yu Yu Hakusho on BD the FUNi Blu-rays have English translated text rather than the original Japanese credits. I'd have liked to have had my Dragon Ball Z Kai BDs with the original Japanese credits and if that had happened, I'd have kept all of them just for that.
I'd bet right now that FUNimation's Cowboy Bebop BDs (later this year) will suffer the same problem, I sure am glad to own UK Cowboy Bebop BDs (inc. Japanese credits).
Dual-Layer discs were terminated by HD-DVD's era and since then I don't remember seeing any more.Black_Anime_Fan wrote:You mean like those Blu-ray/DVD combos I hate oh so much that I've seen floating around? Yeah...no
What dual BD/DVD combos mean is that they both have their own discs, and there's also the case of Ultra Violet and Digital Copies discs which companies have now made them digital codes as it was unnecessary to have it on a disc.
