If it ends up looking anything remotely like Kai in the colors department and manages not to lose a bunch of detail, then there'll be an actual reason for fans to get on board with this.SuperSaiyan3Goku wrote:I'm going to have to agree.penguintruth wrote:I still very much doubt it will look anywhere near as good as the Dragon Box. There's no way FUNimation will top the Dragon Boxes. This new Blu-Ray release is just another way for them to milk DBZ for all its worth.

Maybe we should start taking bets to see how much detail FUNimation manages to retain or lose.Kendamu wrote:If it ends up looking anything remotely like Kai in the colors department and manages not to lose a bunch of detail, then there'll be an actual reason for fans to get on board with this.

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
For 17 episodes on BLU-RAY, they might as well throw in a 5.1 (if possible) or at least stereo version of the dub with Faulconer's score. A lot of people were upset that it wasn't featured on the Dragon Boxes, since it does have some fans. And since this isn't meant for the "die-hard Japanese fan," they should just throw in the dub with Faulconer's score. But they won't... NEXT release!!!
Here's what I predict:
17 episodes per disc, 291 / 17 = 17.12 (rounded off to the nearest hundredth), so let's say 17 releases (they'll squeeze an episode on there somewhere)
Every release will be roughly 3 months apart, 17 x 3 = 51. 51 months of this.
51 / 12 = 4.25, so this release will take 4 years and 3 months to release if they do this the way I predict they will.
Forget Dragon Ball, GT, the movies. They can do that simultaneously.
After their 4 plus year journey of releasing the "OH MY GOD BLU-RAY!!!" release, I predict they will start releasing the Dragon Ball Z DRAGON BOX on Blu-ray! And after that... gasp... sob... could it be? After their 2-4 year release of the Dragon Box on Blu-ray (with hyped up remastering that is so much better than theirs on their DBZ Blu-ray release!!!), now it's time for another remastered DBZ release (on Blu-ray or possibly the next thing that comes out) with the "long-awaited" Faulconer dub! Wow. I have FUNimation's 10 year plan with DBZ in the palm of my hand.

The audio is likely going to be copy & pasted from the season sets. There's at least a chance they might use the DBox master for the JP audio, but I wouldn't bet on it.
And TheGreatness25, Amazon already has 1.2 listed and it comes out a month after 1.1. Also the press release said that the dub music WILL be there.

For a guy who is as we speak ranting in the chatroom about people drawing unreasonable conclusions about this release this is a pretty wild one to make. Especially since even if they do use the same language tracks, it wouldn't be the same tracks as they appear on season sets.jjgp1112 wrote:The audio is likely going to be copy & pasted from the season sets. It feels good to be at least halfway right so far. I guess we just need to see from here what they sourced the video from and what else they're doing with the transfer.
I wonder if they're going to restore the next episode previews, or what.

I didn't mean the exact same masters or tracks or whatever, I just meant the same content - same voices, lines, etc.
Of course, there's also the fact that I have no clue about tech stuff as it pertains to things like audio tracks and shit, so...I'm gonna sit in a corner

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
Since we now know these Blu-ray sets will be 4:3, there's a couple things I'd like to say...
I'm glad FUNi is abandoning their horrible orange brick masters in favor of a new 4:3 transfer for this release. They've come a fairly long way in the remastering department, so I expect the new transfer to look nothing like the orange bricks.
That said, I still stand by what I've said before. The Dragon Boxes are already the best I could possibly ask for in a DBZ release, and once I'm finished collecting them, that's it. I have no desire to continue buying and re-buying DBZ for the rest of my life. Plus, the Blu-rays will surely be a dub-centric release, and only have English titles and credits (no alternate angles), which I don't want when watching the show in Japanese.

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
Its great news that the sets are in 4x3 so we might see a decent release of the series and possibly the "ultimate" set for the different kind of fans (Japanese, English fans who like Kikuchi's score and English fans who like the Broadcast music). Still, its a ripoff for them to only include 17 episodes. Other shows have 26 episodes a set.

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
This is just pure guesswork, but I'm thinking that their strategy here (based off the first coming in November and the second in December) is to release one per month at a lower price point than if they released bigger sets less often.thedarkuniter wrote:Its great news that the sets are in 4x3 so we might see a decent release of the series and possibly the "ultimate" set for kind of fans (Japanese, English fans who like Kikuchi's score and English fans who like the Broadcast music). Anyone recorded this onto video, or transferred a written log?Tanooki Kuribo wrote:So based on what FUNimation said at Otakon. It's a new transfer. Also the trailer they showed was in 4:3.

From the side by side comparison, it looks like the colors are altered from the DBox colors. Looks like Toei gave them copies of the DBox source. And wow, they're actually doing it frame by frame instead of that automated bullshit. I really want a HDTV right now

Going by the shots they gave us, it looks like the job's getting done for real this time! If it turns out to have colors similar to Kai, I'll likely grab discs that have my favorite episodes on them as they come out. Stuff like Goku vs. Nappa & Vegeta, Goku vs. the Ginyu Force, Trunks vs. Freeza, the driving episode, Gohan vs. Cell, Goten vs. Trunks, Goku vs. Majin Vegeta, and Gohan vs. Super Buu.
If it's not Kai colors, I'd at least expect something very nice looking out of this. However, if you look at around 2:50 into the video where it starts with Goku's fist and down his arm, they're doing just that.

That trailer dialouge was all from the original dub right? I wonder if anything will be touched up in the script?

Oh, the glory of Bulma vs. the Crab in HD (the pair of episodes I inadvertedly ALWAYS end up with).
I'll probably end up getting the first set.

I also wonder if we'll also get the episode previews redubbed by the guy who did them for Kai.
Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
The colours look awesome to me. I'm getting this release. And, I lol'd at those "experts" walking like G-men '75 (being off-topic, but I think the opening theme of G-men '75 is one of Kikuchi's best works).
Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
The dub fans may get their release of DBZ that the grew up on and the original fans can injoy it too.
