For the life of me I can't figure out why FUNI hasn't tried to bring the Jump Special, the new movie (BotG), the DB Dragon Box, the GT Dragon Box or the movies Dragon Box over to the US. Why do they keep pushing Z? I'm betting the movies box would sell well since it's still Z.

The only thing that comes to mind is they want to move away from DVD and push BluRay - which isn't a bad thing, but still... even DBox the movies upscaled on Blu would be fine.
Battle of Gods will likely get release soon, maybe early next year. The 2008 Jump Special can't be release here due to right issues. I guess the GT boxes and the movie boxes didn't get release could be the DBZ boxes didn't sell well as Funi hope for.

This is true. What I consider the most annoying thing with TTGL though, is that... the DVD-set is ungodly expensive as well. And Bandai's releases of the show weren't. So we've gone from an affordable home release, to an R2-priced boxset containing essentially the same material. (Though I suppose it is possible that Aniplex's own DVDs have better encoding... Bandai's discs looked pretty terrible at times.)

Thankfully I also seem to recall hearing that the TTGL-BluRays were going to be released in the UK at some point. And if Puella Magi Madoka Magica (another series that got a US-release that was practically identical to the Japanese release... though admittedly not quite as financially suicidally priced) is anything to go by, said UK-release might actually be affordable.

What rights issues are preventing the Jump Special from being released ?

From what I'm able to gather I believe it's due to the music rights.
Not impossible but there's also a secondary license that's needed and that adds more licensing complexity than there needs to be, and profit wise it probably would gain enough to warrant the license.

No-one in any realm of authority has ever said the JSAT special "can't" be licensed out.

It's just very unlikely. I'm not aware of a single other JSAT special (yes, lots of other series get them, too!) that has been licensed for international distribution. That alone doesn't mean it's out of the realm of possibility, but it should tell you something.

What is likely the biggest hurdle is simply the production committee behind it. The JSAT special isn't just something that Toei made; it's actually a Shueshia production that Toei was hired to animate. Suddenly you're looking at two companies instead of one.

And this Japanese stuff is insane. With a lot of these things, it's a matter of MAYBE monthly meetings if something is even MAYBE being thought about being licensed where the committees will get together and talk things out and see what's on the plate. They don't agree on something? OK, forget about everything, and see you next month. MAYBE. Suddenly you can see where years go by without anything happening.

That being said, the right amount of money at the right time with the right people will solve all problems!

VegettoEX you need to go to them and tell them that you're the head honcho over Kanzenshuu and they better release it. :P

Even though many of you may not want these sets, to those that are collecting it, Amazon has Seasons 2 and 3 up for pre-order for a decent $16.96! (yes, the price for Season 2 finally went down).
Of course Prime 2-day free Shipping is also available, great deal if you ask me.

Which is exactly why I'm never giving up hope. It's a completely different ball game than previous 'unreleased' things we've gotten of course, but if I've learned anything in my time as a DB fan, it's never to think we'll NEVER get something.

Even though I find it odd that Walmart still isn't carrying season 1 but they're carrying 2 and 3 and they're $16 bucks as well. This is really a win/win for me. :P I'm just keeping an eye out though...making sure Funimation doesn't decide to up and get rid of this release too because the price dropping so fast kinda scares me.

Edit - Wanted to add a bit more. I have hope we'll get the Jump Special and the new movie because once Duke Nukem Forever got released, Anything is possible! Same thing for this TV series called ''Monsters'' it's finely getting a DVD release(It was lucky to get a couple VHS releases) But 1 thing I doubt we'll ever get will be an official release of Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans.(Even though I own it) owning it officially would be nice. There are little things that give me hope like Funimation adding the GT preview in the Z Dragon-boxes. now whether that was them or Toei made them do it, I don't know.

Just noticed some of the reply backs I got from before that I guess I should address.

That's kind of a different situation IMO though. Granted yes, that's a re-release (or re-re-release in some cases), but we're talking about a box set of 200 or so episodes of material in one box. For $80 upward, that's actually kind of a steal if you want to fork it all over in one go (it's definitely a steal if you were going to pay full price for the individual season releases). Gurren Lagann though is a series of 27 episodes and 2 movies (which may not even be on that Bluray set, I can't remember). That's it. Extras aside, that insane price tag is so not worth what you're getting, IMO.

But clearly someone must be buying it, so more power to Aniplex in that vein, I guess.
Daimo-Rukiri wrote:And the Dragon Boxes weren't craziness? But on the same note, it seems almost any box set is at the $500 range which is crazy! And I doubt Gurren Lagann needed any remastering process considering it's run was in 2007 which makes the price just outrageous! I'll buy that box set eventually though.
I'm assuming you're talking about the Japanese Dragon Boxes, since we're talking about box sets in the $500 range, right? Though from what I understand, some of the US boxes are going for pretty high now...anyway, going on that assumption, that's also a different case - Dragon Ball had never seen a home release in Japan prior to that, not for the TV episodes, so that's another bargaining chip that it has that Gurren doesn't. And again, we're talking about box sets of 100s of episodes versus Gurren's paltry 27 - that alone makes it a completely different ballgame if you ask me.
MarcFBR wrote:Bringing Digimon into it actually shows a rather high misunderstanding of the market.

Digimon while an anime, is being sold effectively purely as a kids cartoon.

If you want DBZ to be dub only, then we can talk, but until then, it's not really a proper comparison

Of course, people also claim DBZ has been released to much, but if we are gonna use Digimon as a base of comparison, that argument gets thrown out a bit... especially when you consider that the four season box is actually the third time some of those episodes were released in a single year.
Not sure if you meant this in reply to my bringing it up in the first place, but if so, full disclosure - I'll never make any attempts to claim to be an expert on marketing. I just make guesses at best, that I hesitate to even call 'educated'. :P My point on bringing up Digimon was purely on the idea that it was weird for Wal-mart.com to carry some of the DBZ Bluray Seasons at any given time but not other ones, because they've been doing the same for Digimon, so Digimon is more my example about Wal-mart.com than comparing the releases at all. That's how I meant it to be, anyway.

To nab a bunch of pseudo-panic-buy pre-orders for season 3 while it's cheap. People who've bought season 3 are pretty much guaranteed to buy 1 and 2.
This just proves to me FUNi must be well aware that people are only buying these for the price.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
This is an 80s/90s animated all-ages show that was popular amongst kids. It's not some potent super weapon that might fall into the wrong hands that we have to protect from evil.

If FUNimation released the footage raw on Blu-ray they wouldn't have to bother remastering it at all and that'd be cost-effective solution.

And then, if people were really annoying by the "ants", damaged footage or etc they could just zoom in and turn their HDTV's DNR on.

There you go I just solved it for ya FUNimation. :P

To be honest the only reason I posted that link was because you mentioned having trouble finding Digimon to buy.

Ohhhhh. My bad then. Thanks, but I've already gotten Season One individual, so I'll probably just be waiting and slowly picking up the individual sets as they're cheap enough. Wal-mart will add Season Two back up (if they haven't already, been a bit since I checked) soon enough.

Aside from the disappearing lines, I prefer the orange bricks. They somehow look more natural and have slightly better colors.
