Re: DragonBall Z Abridged
I don't know about MasakoX being a good Goku for Z. He doesn't have the intensiveness to his voice. I heard him in serious dubs for Goku and it shows. He still sounds to 'light' for Goku in moments when Goku should be intense.
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

So...because Masako and Kelamis sound like Masako Nozawa, they're leagues better than Schemmel? Schemmel doesn't belong anywhere near them.
It's sad when a "serious dub", "official dub" (well it's the official dub of English Kai because Ocean Kai hasn't yet shown up and I'm starting to wonder...), "definitive dub" is inferior to a parody dub.caejones wrote:I think people are forgetting the difference between a parody and a serious dub again.

Yeah I can agree with you on that. MasakoX is used to doing a goofy Goku most of the time for DBZ Abridged so he likely needs a bit more practice with that more serious, intense aspect of the character.Attitudefan wrote:I don't know about MasakoX being a good Goku for Z. Re: DragonBall Z Abridged
Hmm, well... Masako Nozawa is the original Goku. She IS the voice of Goku in essence. And if you make a dub, you'd want to be as close to the original as possible right? I know Dragon Ball is quite an exception in this, as a lot of it is different than the source material and so is the whole character of Goku. So yeah, if MasakoX and Kalamis sound like Masako Nozawa you can say that it IS better. You can say it. I for one grew up with Schemmel, so his Goku is the one I know best, but both Kalamis and MasakoX sell me on the character, and I really see how people could think those are better :pjjgp1112 wrote:So...because Masako and Kelamis sound like Masako Nozawa, they're leagues better than Schemmel? Not to mention the fact that you're kinda treading on thin ice for you to claim that the only people who could possibly think Schemmel is better than those two are fanboys. C'mon, son.
Look at it from the other side. If a voice doesn't sound like the original voice, it's kind of a bad thing, right?
Just trying to be as diplomatic about this as possible :p but others saying MasakoX and Kalamis are better voices than the one Schemmel put up is pretty much they're opinion and they are right, they do sound more like Masako Nozawa and if you're a fan of the original, that means that those two voices are probably, for them, better. And the other way around, if you like the American Dragon Ball you're PROBABLY a fan of Schemmel, because, like me, you've heard him so much. So yeah, people liking Schemmel are probably a sort of fan of his work as Goku, because y'know, he IS the protagonist throughout most of the series :p

Re: DragonBall Z Abridged
I think it's rather a silly notion that English va's (or any other non-native languages in general) have to sound like their "original" Japanese va counterparts. The anime itself is an adaptation from written source material to begin with. Certain quirks just don't translate well--like say the idea that in order for Goku to sound child-like, he must have a high-pitched voice as an adult. Nozawa is great at what she did with Goku in Japanese Z, but sounding like her has nothing to do with ultimately capturing Goku's character in English properly. What it ultimately comes down to is acting ability, mannerisms, inflection, tone, and an accurate script. That's what's important to me. Their are some voices I enjoy more in the original Japanese, but since the English dub of Kai has come along, they're are some English voices I actually prefer to their original Japanese counter-parts. But since I pretty much like bothe Original and the Kai dub, I don't really have to get into a pissing contest about "character x is better in ________ than _________."
Also, I would just like to say, it's hard for me to take anyone's opinions on Voice Actors seriously when they claim that any Teamfourstar va is better than the current Funimation cast. Not trying to sound like an ass, but come'on, their parody voices people. Whether you can make the argument about the voices themselves "sounding" better to you or whatever, none of the Teamfourstar Va's could deliver the same kind of serious, dramatic performances needed for a proper dub of the show. Not hating on them or anything. They definitely have talent for voice acting(and maybe they can do more serious work when they're not trying to imitate established voices from a cartoon).
So other than that--love dbz abridged like any other sensible fan. Can't wait till you guys get to the Android/Cell saga, Kaiser!

*Cough.* Um, not speaking for myself at all, but there are legitimately a couple of actors on the team who are genuinely talented people who could very well break into voice acting and, hell, even screen acting. I'm not necessarily one of them, as I said, but I work with some incredible people. You've never really had a chance to see some of them shine, like I have, as we're always doing a COMEDY.saiyanprimalforce wrote:...none of the Teamfourstar Va's could deliver the same kind of serious, dramatic performances needed for a proper dub of the show.

Sorry, Kaiser. That's what I actually meant to say. To be fair, I think you misread this part of what I said(maybe may fault for cramming it in in parenthesis).KaiserNeko wrote:*Cough.* Um, not speaking for myself at all, but there are legitimately a couple of actors on the team who are genuinely talented people who could very well break into voice acting and, hell, even screen acting. My point was merely about the parody-esque tone of the vocal work used in Abridged in context of Z/Kai, not the potential talent of the VA's themselves. I guess I said it really poorly, but that's what I meant. When they're not limited to imitating established voices, any of the VA's could probably mostly likely pull off both professional and natural performances. Again, that's what I was trying to say--instead of coming off like I was trying to assert that the VA's aren't really "pro-grade."They definitely have talent for voice acting(and maybe they can do more serious work when they're not trying to imitate established voices from a cartoon).
Again, sorry about that.

Y'know, guys. Before the whole "voice actor" thing, weren't we talking about this? I really want to hope they play Super Saiyan Goku/Super Saiyan 2 Gohan seriously to hear what Masako sounds like doing those voices seriously.
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!

Re: DragonBall Z Abridged
I'm only posting this here because I've been requested so so so many times to approach you, Kaiser, about this. I was also suggested to post it here because that seems to be where you hang out on occasion and talk to everyone. And if it weren't for that, I wouldn't bother because I know you have Taka as Cell, which is quite a unique interpretation and I'm sure it's absolutely hilarious, but....

Just listen to that. Yes, it is legitimately all my voice. No, I don't expect you to consider me or even give me a role. If any of you think this is good, than great. Of course I'd love to play Cell, but I also don't wanna steal roles or undermine anyone's project or anything silly. I don't even know if you want a voice match for the role or not, I mean it sounded like that's what Taka was going for but...yea.
And in case you happen to not believe that this is my voice, but Dameon Clarke's (which happens quite a bit), here's a parody I did awhile back. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IdSjQA-hmmg
I don't even know if you read this area regularly or not. Just posting for the hell of it, no harm in approaching you guys, I don't think. :I

It's a wonder why Funimation doesn't just hire you instead of relying on Travis's performance as Cell which sounds so forced it's literately un-listenable.
