Really? I feel almost the opposite. I feel like SSJ3 Powerup is really dramatic, but I don't feel anything powerful emitting from the track (That's not to say I don't like it though.), as opposed to the GBA version, which is both, IMO.Innagadadavida wrote:SSJ3 Powerup is one of the best songs in the soundtrack. It's mondo-epic. The gameboy version failed to capture any of that. Its a shame because I think they could have but they sped them both up and added some stupid effects.

My muse was tickled for some odd reason on this late Fourth of July and I decided to do a few reviews on some tracks of the dub score. I think I’ll tackle the Buu songs later too.
Vegeta Powers up
The official song clocks in at about nearly 4 minutes so no doubt it had to be condensed. Yet the Legacy of Goku version of this song is almost a complete remix of Bruce’s version. It’s difficult to compare the two. One is very ferocious and dark which definitely fits the whole theme of Vegeta “powering up”. The LOG version felt more confident upbeat and jazzy like a victory theme. If this comparison of the two songs had not been pointed out to me I wouldn’t have noticed at all that they were related. I have to say these tracks are way too different to compare fairly.
Android 17 and 18-
After the mess that was Gero and 19’s circus theme which is a track often mocked by dub and sub fans alike it looks like Bruce finally managed to capture the androids ominous creepy tone well this time around.Complete with computer like noises embedded in the background this would be a hard act to follow up on the Gameboy. The Legacy of Goku 2 track starts off a little weird. It sounds like someone is constantly hitting a hypothetical whammy bar and making the opening to the track vibrate in an unfitting fashion. However they nailed the computer bleeps. Dare I say they did it better then the original? I thought for sure they would have a hard time recreating those. I have to give this one to the LOG2 track just for having a great middle section which makes the short beginning dilemma moot in my eyes for it only appears once in the song. It’s a shame nobody really got to enjoy this track all the way through. If I remember correctly it only appears briefly.
Trunks Theme-
I have to say the synthesizer really doesn’t sound overly out of place in the Cell saga. It fits in with the whole futuristic android dystopia theme relatively well. First of all I will have to confess letting the scene where Trunks first arrives on the battlefield in Legacy of Goku 2 sit on my Gameboy longer then need be just to enjoy this song. These two tracks sound really identical. No glaring differences as far as I can tell. I guess I’ll go ahead and give this one to the original version just for having a cool little guitar like riff somewhere near the end. (I’m really grasping at straws…it’s the same song in nearly every way)
Vegeta’s Theme-
I have to say the LOG2 version is better then the original. The original theme sort of piddles out at one point which was very distracting and while they did copy that moment in the LOG2 version I felt they handled it better or maybe the limitations on the gameboy helped it not sound so blatantly out of place. They really expanded upon this theme in the LOG version adding some really great parts that do nothing but improve on an already good song. Those artificial guitars in the Gameboy version are great no doubt as Venom already mentioned.
Android 16’s theme-
I don’t care much for this theme whether it’s in the anime or in the game. The only positive thing I can say about this track is its short… in the original version anyway. I guess I’ll just say the original version is better because it’s over quicker.
Imperfect Cell’s theme-
The original song is WAY too chaotic having about 3 artificial instruments play at the same time. It then calms down and just sounds like boring mundane background noise. The LOG II version proves less is more by sticking to one solid beat and not letting the end calm down and turn into mush. Instead it sort of calms down and turns into a 16esque theme which works a lot better in tandem with the beginning then a standalone. Legacy of Goku 2 wins by a land slide.
Perfect Cell’s theme-
Okay I’ll admit it, my secret shame. I always liked this song. The original is short sweet and simple. The game however decides that midway through Cell walks into a groovy disco tech and starts busting some moves. It takes a weird turn midway through and morphs into an upbeat dance remix. I really actually like the game version as a stand alone song but it’s a little bit of a mood killer when you stop feeling creped out and start shaking your hips to he beat. The original wins this one.
Hyperbolic Time Chamber-
Okay well I don’t like the original track at all until about 1:50 in. The game makers agree with me apparently and cut out all the fluff in the beginning. Not to mention they go a step further and remix the good part of the song making a full fledged track out of something that had been reduced to a short part at the end. The game wins hands down no doubt. Chopping out the fat and giving you a double helping of the juiciest part of this steak with a little seasoning for that extra zing.
Let me just say Venom this is an awesome project your doing. I really don’t feel like you get enough love on Youtube for it. I really appreciate the effort you put into this project and I hope to see more if there’s indeed more to be seen…or heard rather. Thanks a lot for compiling these comparisons.

I do agree that just that ambience of the song is different. Just remember though, I'm not really doing in-depth "comparisons." I'm just pointing out out which songs in the game derived themselves from the score for DBZ.NeptuneKai wrote:Vegeta Powers Up

I have always enjoyed it this particular track. I always thought they got this track perfectly, to the point that I tend to listen to it a little more than the original! And yes, they only played it once, if I remember correctly, that being when they first appeared in the lab.NeptuneKai wrote: Androids 17 and 18-

Yes, I admit as well to leaving my gameboy the way it was for far longer than I needed to. XD And yes, you have nothing to say. It's EXACTLY the same. Same problem I had. lolNeptuneKai wrote: Trunks' Theme-

I find the LOG2 version a little better too than the original. I found the original track just got boring when you got to half of it. Fortunatly, they fixed that in the GBA version. Great job too.NeptuneKai wrote:Vegeta’s Theme-

This one is everyone's secret shame. I think even Meri likes it! However, I like the LOG2 version better. It's longer, expanded upon it, and gave it a beat. All the stuff I like.
Agree again, 100%. I always liked the little we got in the original track, and having that expanded was golden for me.NeptuneKai wrote:Hyperbolic Time Chamber-

Whooo Buu saga music review.
SSJ3 Power Up-
What can I say about this one? If you like the dub music you LOVE this song. If you don’t you probably still think this track is a lot more bearable then the rest. It’s nothing short of catchy. It’s an iconic tune of Dragonball Z and an excellent choice to put as the intro song to Buu’s Fury. So how does the GBA equivalent stand up to this legacy? Surprisingly well. Slowing down the beat ever so slightly and adding a more hard rock beat to it along with extending the middle of the song to include a really cool guitar and bass section based off of the original tune. The game version wins for no reason other then expanding on an already killer beat.
King Kai-
Snake Way is a relatively unique track. Slow and mystical, you don’t often hear something like this in the dub. However the enjoyable relaxing melody comes to an end when those annoying cartoony sound effects keep popping up. The Gameboy version is faithful to the original gets rid of all the intrusions and blends in a similar track to fill in the gaps where cartoony distractions once were. The Buu’s fury version wins fixing a previously unbearable song for all to enjoy.
Pikkon’s theme-
I said it once and I’ll say it again. This song sounds like it’s ripped straight out of a new Donkey Kong Country cave level. Luckily I love Donkey Kong Country music so I enjoy this song a lot. Especially the sections were the music goes into a sort of spiral. The Buu’s fury version does an absolutely awful job at recreating this track. I guess they just didn’t have the proper tools to create a high pitch chime like its source material had. The original wins this time.
Gohan Vs. Freeza-
What took you so long Legacy of Goku series? Honestly come on now. It’s Rock the Dragon, SSJ3 Power up and Gohan Vs. Freeza. The Triforce of iconic dub tracks and you waited until the last game for this one? Well better late then never. A really energetic powerful song is what “Gohan Vs.Freeza” delivers and the Buu’s Fury version doesn’t disappoint. It’s essentially the same song with little to no alterations. I have to give this one to the original though just for those awesome cheesy synth guitars.
Gohan Angers-
Gohan angers? More like my ears anger until 1 minute into this song. It’s the Hyperbolic Time Chamber ordeal all over again. Take good song chop out all the awful fluff extend slightly and voila a dub train wreck made listenable. I always liked the Buus fury version of this song and I still do. The game wins once again.
SSJ 3 Power Up (Game version 2)-
Man the game developers really made sure they didn’t piss anyone off. We get a double dose of SSJ3 goodness with an alternative gameboy take on this classic song. This time we get a slowed down version which feels more like a song that would play in the aftermath of the transformation.
Hell-
I really really really like this song. In fact it’s my favorite track in the entire game. I don’t remember where this was played in the dub but Hell is a very fitting location for this “Bizzaro world” melody. This might be one of my favorite tracks in the entirety of Z sub or otherwise. The game version is pretty much just a straightforward recreation of the original song without the techno bells and whistles. Me being a techno fan actually kind of liked the original as it was. Did I mention I LOVE this song?
Evil Buu’s theme-
I’m relatively apathetic about this song. It’s not awful but it’s just sort of run of the mill. I’ll give this one to the game just for the fact that it was simplistic and got rid of a few awkward moments in the original.
Super Buu-
I always thought this would have been a better song to give to Kid Buu. It has a very child like chaotic sound to it. Nonetheless I really enjoy this track. I also enjoyed it when it was called Marmalade by System of a Down. The game goes through it’s typical routine of chopping out the unnecessary parts of the original track but I don’t feel like that version had too many glaring diversions from the main song. You just can’t beat those awesome guitars in the original version though. Bruce’s track wins.
Vegetto’s Theme-
Yeesh this track has music A.D.D. It sounds like it wants to go in 20 different directions and just ends up sounding like a jumbled mess. The game version takes a piece of the song and runs with it but just sort of loops it over and over and over to the point of nausea. I’m giving this one to the game just because it had a definite melody.

Music is a completely subjective thing so it's cool if you like it. That track just personally doesn't tickle my fancy. Maybe it sounds better in the anime with footage and dialogue over it.VenomSymbiote wrote:

This might have been mentioned and I just skipped over it, but the piece you entitled "Gohan Is Dead" is actually "Prelude" by the band Slaughter.

You mean, that track's been released? 0_0
Huh. I did not know that. Hmm... I should probably fix that then.

Re: V. Symbiote's Dub/LOG Music Comparison Project!
Yeah, the Trunks special is one of the features where FUNimation licensed a bunch of existing rock music. Actually, the fact that this song was arranged for LOG2 brings up an interesting point; if I recall correctly, wasn't Faulconer originally unaware that his music was used in the game? Going by that, did the game developers even have permission to use this song?

Re: V. Symbiote's Dub/LOG Music Comparison Project!
Yes, that much I knew. I guess I never realized that this particular track was a licensed track, since it's an instrumental song, as opposed to a "real" rock song.ThunderPX wrote:Yeah, the Trunks special is one of the features where FUNimation licensed a bunch of existing rock music.
Faulconer was unaware of that? Really? How'd you know he was? As well, that is an interesting point... Maybe the license extended to more than just the anime.ThunderPX wrote:Actually, the fact that this song was arranged for LOG2 brings up an interesting point; if I recall correctly, wasn't Faulconer originally unaware that his music was used in the game? Re: V. Symbiote's Dub/LOG Music Comparison Project!
I recall hearing something of the sort, but I'm not entirely sure. Maybe it was Scott Morgan who said he didn't know, which would be different.
My personal guess, though, would be that the Faulconer tracks belong to FUNimation anyway while the movie tracks were simply licensed for that release, as it seems a little odd that they would be able to license those rights on to Atari. That's all just conjecture on my part, though, and I'm no lawyer.
