I hope they will fix some stuff in the Kai episodes, like the left out lines(like Krillin saying that Piccolo will eat Gohan) and some damaged images like Tenshinhan's death, and Kami(That guy is really damaged in Kai).

Who says it's that big a deal to them? It was brought up briefly (by way of a couple of screenshots) in Jump articles while pointing out what some of the differences were. That doesn't mean it's set in stone. Releasing it in 4:3 would just mean that Toei cares about quality over changes for the sake of changes.
But besides that, this wasn't done the same way FUNimation did it's widescreen release where it just cuts the image off to make it widescreen. Some frames in Kai were actually re-positioned to have it look\fit better in widescreen. So what about those scenes now? It just don't make sense to me...
Um, what? All of those scenes they cropped still exist in an original slightly-wider-than-4:3 version that they cropped (including the reanimated scenes - Wasted Wisher confirmed that). How they chose to crop those frames has no bearing on a potential 4:3 version. Why would it? They don't have to "un-crop" the series, they just use the version they didn't crop yet.

So basically we have to buy the first disc, if we want any of the boxsets. I guess it seems fair. This might get expensive, again. Meh, money's money, since I want it, it won't be a waste for me.

If it 4:3. great, if not, doesn't matter. Kai has taken care of the widescreen shots in a decent way that was not distracting like FUNI's attempt.

Though, for box 3, that had better be a typo, an episode missing, from what it looks like?

As Innagadadavida so aptly put it, "You're missing more of the picture than FUNimation's Orange Bricks!"

Really? Didn't know that, I've only watch about 3 episodes of Kai. If they are 4:3 even better than. I'll be patiently waiting for the DVD's and Blu rays. Well, at least Toei is giving fans the full screen releases if the listing are to be believed. Something I wished FUNI would have done from the beginning with the orange bricks, but what's done is done. No sense in beating a dead horse I guess.

no, Kai isn't, but.... well... nevermind. That joke was oddly placed... His Kai joke was "No filler, like Kai."

Kai isn't Z, this version--of the digitally altered footage--is meant to be seen in widescreen. Sure, a few shots (particularly those scouter ones) could look better, but as it is the widescreen here works.

Hm. I might be willing to get into this release. I haven't really picked up any new Dragonball stuff in a really long time.

EDIT: Oh, and it looks like the DVD version will be really cheap!

Well, at least the Blu-Ray is 4:3!

are we sure it's definitely 4:3? While a lot of people would stop being mad at Toei, there's something weird about that, why not air it as standard if they already had it like that?

Why are volumes 2 and onwards of the Kai DVDs almost double the price of volume 1 but still have the same amount of episodes?!

Why the hell would they do that?

Same reason Funimation made region free dvds. To make more $$$

Japan falls under Region A, which is also the USA, if you live stateside.
If you are from the UK, tough break, won't work. U.K is region B, unless you buy a Region Free BD player.

Image

Yellow is Region A, Green is region B and so on...

Don't lose hope that it'll be region free. A huge proportion of Blu-ray releases, including nearly all of the anime released in Japan, is region free. No way to be sure in advance, however.

As for subtitles? No chance.

Yes, we're sure.

On the Amazon listing for the Box Set it says
「ドラゴンボール改」はテレビ放映時に4:3の画像を16:9にカットして放送していたが、Blu-rayにはフル画面で収録!
スピーディ、かつ鮮明になった「ドラゴンボール改」が、フルで楽しめる!
That roughly translates out to, "So, to broadcast it in HD we had to crop it to 16:9. For the Blu-Ray, we're putting it back in 4:3... THE WAY IT WAS MEANT TO BE SEEN!!!"

Does it really say "the way it was meant to be seen?"

Oh lawd.

I said it was a rough translation. I added the last part as a joke.

Interestingly enough, this might account for the blurriness of the Kai episodes. If the remastering was, in fact, done in 4:3 and then simply cropped/zoomed for broadcast, it would certainly explain the softness of the image.

And while the first boxset starting at episode 4 is dumb on some level, it kind of makes sense in the respect that you don't have to necessarily buy a huge chunk at once just to find out you hate it (buy disc one, if you like it then buy the boxes, otherwise you're only out the price of one disc). I'll give it a shot, I'm curious to see what the end product is...
