Kakkarot - what you like and don't like about him...

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Hate to jump on this "bandwagon" so late, but this is exactly what I was going to say.

True, filler puts most of the emphasis on his goofy/childish side in Z... though I do count filler for most part. There's that moment when he was taking a bath on the way to Namek that's in the anime and manga.
Bathing is childish?

But yeah, I don't like filler Goku much. He's so out of character. After growing up, Goku in the manga never acts like a child, in my opinion.
No, but at the time he was acting all silly 'cause he was so happy about the progress he was making from training under all that gravity. It looked just as dumb as the part he was eating the clouds... Though, beyond that point - I can't think of a moment where he acts juvenile in the manga.

Do you object to adult Goku's naked deary-ear?
You mean when he talks about nude pics of Bulma? I actually found that part amusing.

Rocketman - do you actually think he's an asshole... like intentionally?

Everyone better stick to referring to him as "Goku" or "Son Goku" around here... or else.... Kakkarot KAKKAROT KAKKAROT

Me too. I understand people who want to call him by his birth name, but as Goku boldy told Turles, "My name is not Kakkarot! It's Goku!" And for those who scream movies aren't canon, he said the same thing to Raditz and later Vegeta when they first met.

Anywho, my only gripes with Goku is how he's just a bad father and husband. Especially the end of Z. To selfishly leave his family like that just to train some new kid so he can have a fight? How insulting is that to poor Chi Chi? How about Goten or Gohan? Or little Pan? How about even Vegeta, whose always been considered Goku's eternal rival? Goku left him behind too, claiming the kid to be a potentially bigger challenge.

I was glad that GT had Uub away from his family as well since that's only fair. I especially liked how Neko Majin Z had Uub training at Goku's house, leading me to imagine that they spent a year with Uub's family, a year with Goku's family, and 3 years up at the lookout.

Dude, c'mon... don't add to the problem. It's obvious what you're getting at, so say it properly without the douchebaggery. Having tons of people articulately describe what their problem is would do much more work...

Sorry, I just thought a demonstration would be more convincing than a mere description.

I find it strange to call Goku Kakarrot since Goku was the most common name throughout the series. It's getting on my nerve to just see someone calling Goku Kakrrot on this forum. No offense.

Basically... for me and many others - Kakkarot as a character is like a double-edged sword. Though I'd have to say I like him much more than I dislike him.. :)

I think it's conceivable that Dragonball can be enjoyed even if you don't like the main character, Son Gokuu. This is because there are so many other characters and such a broad range of storylines, that there's a lot to be interested in. Also, in some of the later story arcs we go for rather long stretches of not really seeing a lot of Gokuu (when he's dead, when he's flying to Namek, when he's dying of a heart disease...).

I'll bet there are more people than you think who tolerate Shonen Jump shows like Naruto without really liking Naruto as a characters. These people just never become obsessive fans.

I don't like his family values, or his detachment from basically anyone whose ass he isn't whooping.

Don't get me wrong though, he's still one of my favorites.

Thanks to a screenreader, I completely mistook the meaning of that post at first as "30$ HEY UR CUTE!". ... Except with lengthened vowels. XD.

*has an opinion on the Kakarot thing, but won't go into it unless someone actually cares*. ...

Reading this topic has made me realize something: I am Goku with a shorter temper, less hair, and horrible vision. Ur... and less strength. Ribs and jelly? Oh, and less independence.

Which I think somehow proved that Goku isn't a nudist, somewhere in my head... you know, since he was alone in the woods with no human contact, yet only got naked when water was involved.

I love his heroic nature and his self sacrifices but the guy is a horrible father and an even worse friend, how long was it since he had seen Bulma and Krillin at the end of Z? Like 5 years or something 0_o

Don't underestimate friends who can disappear for ages, then still act the same around you when you finally see them again. They're rare, and not a bad thing. Much better than clingy, needy friends, in my opinion. My very best friend is one that I can go forever without talking to, and just pick up where we left off like nothing happened in between.

And he is a awful husband always neglecting his wife and going out on hazardous adventures. Still one of the corner stones of manga protagonists although I will always prefer Kenshiro from Hokuto no Ken over him at any time.

*Sigh*

As always I'm late to the party. Everything I would have like to say has already been said. Including all the inappropriate jokes about Goku. Oh well, let's give it a shot.

What I like:
- He's giant lovable man child and I wouldn't have him any other way.
- He isn't "deep." He doesn't need some long winded out reason why he fights or why he saves the world time after time. He loves fighting and if someone or something threatens his friends or family he's going to kick it's ass.
- And the hair, I just dig the hair.

What I Don't Like:
- ... Argh! Must... Think of something...Love Goku to much to think of .... anything .... bad .... OH I GOT IT!

I hate it when he leaves his family (especially his wife) for years or decades without a care. It's like Toriyama deeply hated his creations and wanted all the characters to suffer and stand behind Goku's shadow for the entirety of the series.
