It may not necessarily be a purposeful effort. They could change it if they wanted to, but it would cost more money and take more time. They probably stick to the original more closely because it's easier and gets the job done. They're obviously not concerned with lip sync (see Burst Limit).obiwan23s wrote:On the topic of the video games, yes, I think they have been taking a more serious approach to those in the story mode parts of the games. Last fall, my roommate and I bought Budokai Tenkaichi 3 and instantly I switched it over to the Japanese voices and noticed that the "dubtitles" for the story mode didn't stray too far from the Japanese dialogue. Of course there were some that didn't match, but I'd say it was 95% correct which is an improvement over the TV series dub which I'd generously say is 65% correct.
This Doesn't Excuse The Dub, But...

Seems it was actually the developers in Japan who was giving FUNi their lines for the games. In some YouTube video Sabat was telling a story at a con about how he had to fight with the guys in Japan in order for them to allow him to say, "Over 9000!" instead of "Over 8000!"Innagadadavida wrote:It may not necessarily be a purposeful effort. I'd like to ask this: Why the heck Ocean Group had 2 VAs for Goku?! This just makes it even more confusing.
I had no problem with Schemmel overall, but I really think he should redub Goku. What irriates me is that the script was added a bit for Goku just prior to Earth destroying at the hand of Kid Buu. If he was able to add a line for him, why didn't he do it for Season 3? While I kinda understand why Linda was choosen to do the voice for freeza. Similarly, Nozawa was choosen for Goku's voice. Perhaps it was because of Freeza's appearance? We never know the reason behind this. IMO, Linda's voice didn't really bothers me because she sounds really great for 4th form Freeza. She emotionally delivered her final line extremely well.
I'm thankful that Funimation had finally do the voice for the main cast instead of Ocean (there are few VAs from ocean I really like). it was horrendous during the saban/Ocean days. The script was beyond terrible. Your father was a brilliant scientist! ..... what the heck is that? Could there be any worse than that?
Overall, funimation had improved to the point where the fans are satisfied. Sure, they made some really bad decisions, but they were able to handle many things well. We need to be reminded that most countries' dubs are beyond horrendous.

Those lines were already recorded years ago, they just didn't insert them into their original dub for whatever reason...DragonBalllKaiHD wrote:If he was able to add a line for him, why didn't he do it for Season 3?.

Back in the day when they were dubbing Seasons 1 and 2 the first time, you were paid per spoken line you acted out and screaming wasn't considered a "line." So, Ian Corlett was doing a whole lot of extra work and damaging his voice (the thing he makes his living with) for no money. So, he quit after Season 1.DragonBalllKaiHD wrote:I'd like to ask this: Why the heck Ocean Group had 2 VAs for Goku?! This just makes it even more confusing.

It's really a shame that Funimation had to learn and improve on a show that we cherish. If Funimation redubbed it now, I feel they would make it true to the original, and not like a Saturday Morning cartoon. Kai is their chance, but I'm just worried if they'd get Sean back. Despite the critique, he's still the English Goku to me.
I believe that's a Vancouver exclusive thing, though, so it doesn't apply to FUNimation in-house studio (or Okratro, I'd assume) which is by the hour.Kendamu wrote:Back in the day when they were dubbing Seasons 1 and 2 the first time, you were paid per spoken line you acted out and screaming wasn't considered a "line." And just a side note, I believe Morrow took over for Kelamis because the latter wanted to go on the road as a comedian, right?

I don't know who does what now, but I was speaking in past tense. The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.
Why though? I respect your opinion but I'm just very curious why you pick Linda over the Portuguese voice.NeptuneKai wrote:I do not. Listen to the voice, the insane Joker style voice fits the character perfectly. I know that dub had tons of problems but I really do think they got Freeza's voice perfectly.

Kyle Hebert lives in LA, but he's still able to record lines for Funimation. Schemmel could probably return for Kai, despite living in NY. I agree with you, as well. For me, he's the English Goku.Sanjiscool wrote:It's really a shame that Funimation had to learn and improve on a show that we cherish.
