Well, if you COULD make the decision, would you have the Blu-Rays be widescreen? Take into account that it was animated in fullscreen, aired in fullscreen, and that any form of widescreen available will either stretch the footage or crop it.Rory wrote:I'm not ruining anything! There is a difference, and the widescreen is largely appropriate (it's a HD product in 2010, I do expect good looking wide screen, sorry if that upsets anybody, it's just my way of thinking).VegettoEX wrote:You're right in that there does appear to be a difference between the crop used on TV broadcast for Kai (selectively shifting scenes up and down) and what was done with the FUNimation orange brick

Re: Funimation Dragon Ball Kai Bluray Speculation
Hey, it aired that way in Japan, and they're fine with it. If it were up to me? Sure, 16:9. It wouldn't get the huge backlash that the bricks did, 'cause this would be many peoples first experience with the series, and it isn't cut so sloppily as FUNimation did it, also it isn't being stretched/blurred to fuck, dried out colors etc.
Re: Funimation Dragon Ball Kai Bluray Speculation
It was only cropped to air on TV. It's pretty telling what Toei thinks when the high def Blu-ray release for the next decade-plus is going to be 4:3.
Re: Funimation Dragon Ball Kai Bluray Speculation
It seems the majority are against me on this one, ah well.
My opinion still stands, it would've been really nice to have alternate angles though..

Re: Funimation Dragon Ball Kai Bluray Speculation
Wouldn't subtitles be at least partially cut off by zooming to 16:9 on your TV, though? It wouldn't really be an option for those who want subtitles then.VegettoEX wrote:You want less picture? You actually want things removed?Rory wrote:16:9 please.
Fill my TV with glorious goodness!
It's the same as with the orange bricks -- don't make the rest of us suffer if you can't be bothered to press the "zoom" button on your remote to "fill up" your widescreen TV. Everyone wins when it's uncropped.

Re: Funimation Dragon Ball Kai Bluray Speculation
Not necessarily. I've had my TV crop some of FUNi's 4:3 movie singles before, and the subtitles were still visible.Greenman wrote:Wouldn't subtitles be at least partially cut off by zooming to 16:9 on your TV, though? That would mean they'd basically be putting the episodes on the disc twice, which would mean they'd have to double the disc count for a version barely anyone wants. I think it's obvious why they aren't doing that.Rory wrote:It seems the majority are against me on this one, ah well.

Dude, it looks like it was made in Paint. You can literally make the same kind of cover in less than 20 minutes.

I'm talking about the cover. Not the Goku art piece.

It's a bit a bland but the Goku art is just so good, it doesn't really need a lot of decoration on the cover.nathantheguitarist wrote:I'm talking about the cover. Not the Goku art piece.

I like the "simple" style it has going on there.
Re: Funimation Dragon Ball Kai Bluray Speculation
I'd say everything but the Gokû art distracts from the art itself. The colors don't really mix and their brightness makes it blaringly apparent.
But that's just me.

Simple can be good, but this is too simple! Why can't it be more like FUNi's Trunks TV special cover? Or even the Japanese blu-ray cover!
I am disappointed...

Fair enough, you are entitled to your opinion. Still going to buy it though, no matter what.JulieYBM wrote:I'd say everything but the Gokû art distracts from the art itself. The colors don't really mix and their brightness makes it blaringly apparent.

Re: Funimation Dragon Ball Kai Bluray Speculation
Wow, that looks... boring. :/
The layout and background appear so lazily-compiled that they make the Season Sets look good. The Goku art itself isn't bad, but its placement is awkward. It would look better if it were zoomed in a bit, as there's way too much negative space. If anyone has a high-quality version of that Goku artwork, I could make a better mockup.
I hope the DVD boxart ends up looking better.
